The 2021 Emmys Were a Thoroughly Modern (Mostly-White, COVID-Unsafe) Disaster

We need a mandate that black shows win Emmys, regardless of whether they deserve it
In fact, I present next year's Emmy to the new Wonder Years (black version). Is it on yet? Doesn't matter.

Went to a car show the other day.
There were a lot of cars.
The most wonderful car we saw was a 1990 Buick Roadmaster station wagon, fully loaded, great condition. You could fit a 3rd grade class in there, with room to move your house. I told the owner "SOLD" but he refused. I'm not sure, but I think I saw a coffee maker and fridge in the back.
I prefer to see antique cars, which, in my state, is any car over 25 years. There were a whole bunch of recent Mustangs, hopped up to hell. Not impressed. It was interesting to see 1950s cars hopped up. One had an engine so bright and shiny, it was cleaner than my dining room table - you could eat off it. There was a Studebaker - ever see one? I liked the 50s and some 60s cars that were stock. American cars were the Stuff and we haven't come close since the 80s. Now everything is smaller and bumpy. There was a huge old Lincoln with suicide doors. An incredibly early El Camino.

No car show would be complete without completely irrelevant booths and activities.
They had all sorts of mobile rides, which largely involved getting into a harness and jumping. If you jumped in the right spot, it would vault you directly to the hospital.
There were political booths. Interesting to note that any political signs had the person's name, but not party affiliation. There was also a Tea Party booth... that's odd, although anything's an improvement where I live. There were cheerleaders with a booth, or so Wife tells me. I dare not look in that direction.

Out favorite truck was The Dog Bone Guy. He has all sorts of frozen fresh bones for your dog, as well as cat goodies. He always has a few Bernese Mountain Dogs with him, one laying on a fan. Penny is a huge fan of the bones. Did you know that catnip mellows dogs out?

We went to a flea market, with a small guitar show.
It was said to be under an hour's drive.
With directions and phone in hand, we discovered it was no way near an hour.
In fact, it took two hours.
Two hours and a lot of screaming.

One thing we noticed when we got together was that we agree on most things.
We discovered the only thing we didn't really agree on was directions.

ME: I left the page up with the directions
HER: FSCK YOU.
ME: Huh?
HER: Oh, sorry, I'll copy them down. Now that I've copied them down, can you give me the minutes between directions?
ME: FSCK YOU.
HER: Huh?
ME: Did you miss them when you were copying the directions down?
HER: Never mind - I'll just use my phone.

This is before we've gotten in the car.

HER: This is where you want to get off. Stay to the left, stay to the left.
ME: I am staying to the left.
HER: I just wanted to make sure you stayed to the left.
ME: I heard you.
HER: I was just sayin...
ME: Well maybe you should stop sayin...

ME: Look - there's Forty Foot Road! Do you know the history?
HER: Huh?
ME: Do you know the history of Forty Foot Road?
HER: Where's that?
ME: We're passing it.
HER: Oh.
ME: It's from a time where everything was dirt, like North Philly. They managed to put together forty feet of actual road.
HER: Really?
ME: No. But you know you're out of the city when you cross Forty Foot Road.
HER: You're a dick.

ME: So what are we looking for?
HER: Route 37.
ME: and about when should we be looking for it?
HER: Soon.
ME: I see.

ME: I don't mean to aggravate things, but I still haven't seen a Route 37.
HER: I'll look it up on the map. I need cross streets.
ME: Main St. Hollows St. Route 34.
HER: Ok, what are the cross streets?
ME: Start with the three I just called out.
HER: WELL MAYBE I WASN'T READY YET.
ME: Brown St. Eviction Ave.
HER: Ok, checking... it says there's no Eviction Ave.
ME: In spite of us just passing it.
HER: Yes. Ok, look for route 36 instead. Have you seen it yet?
ME: No, because I wasn't looking for it.
HER: [hissing of air] Pull over at that gas station and ask.
ME: YOU ask.  Won't matter.
HER: And why not?
ME: It's closed.
HER: [hissing of air] WELL STOP AT ONE THAT'S OPEN. OR SOMEWHERE.
ME: It's EARLY IN THE MORNING, perhaps we should have called the stations to be open and ready for us to ask directions. Hey, is that a phone in your lap?
HER: Yes.
ME: Then WHY is it taking us forever to find simple streets? You've got more power in that thing than the Space Shuttles. They managed to make it to space and back.
HER: YOU DO IT.
ME: I'm driving, which leaves me short an appendage or two.
HER: You know it annoys the hell out of me when you breathe that way.
ME: What way?
HER: THAT way. I know you're doing it on purpose.
ME: If I had known breathing annoyed you so much, I'd have done more of it.
HER: We're looking for Hill Ave.
ME: We're ON Hill Ave. Turn the phone around. You were smart as a whip when I met you. What happened?
HER: You had hair. What happened?
ME: Was that Route 36?
HER: I dunno. I wasn't looking. TURN THE CAR AROUND!!!!

ME: Screw this. I don't want a divorce. I'm turning around and going home.
HER: No - wait ... that's the street we're looking for. The flea market is on the left! Right before it is the dairy where we're going afterwards, for fresh ice cream!

Meeting us, you'd never know.

I've often said that living with a multiple is like driving a bus full of first graders.
I HAVE TO GO TO THE POTTY!
I'M THIRSTY!
I'M HUNGRY!

All I want to do is get to the guitar show.
The first problem is that parking is about half a mile from anything. The flea market is that big.
Eventually we located all the necessary places to keep everybody quiet and happy.
The small guitar show was.... small. It was a nice place to pick up your first no-name guitar, built in a country that you can't pronounce, using child labor.
After 15 minutes' eyeballing, I was done.

And now, breakfast.
There were two food stalls. I don't know what they had, but they were identical in the humongous lines to purchase food. The voices were starting again.

The location is pretty far out into the non-city regions.
I was pretty good looking, compared to the rest of the crowd. This should alarm anyone.
The vendors were really friendly. They kept trying to talk to me. I suggested next time, I wear the invisibility cloak.
An old foreign fellow talked to Wife, completely unbidden (and completely unwanted). He said he should've gotten there the day before so he could see everything. He smelled like he had been there a few days.
There was just acres of Stuff, some inside, some outside. Every individual piece had the distinction of being completely not interesting to me. Plus my nerves were regenerating from the car battle, so I kept my mouth shut before something really bad came out of it (as opposed to generally bad).

We finally ate. The three of us... Her, me, and the bee. The bee was incredibly interested in my sandwich. I was going to suggest she swat him away violently, but decided better of it. Then she went pale anyway...

HER: Did I bring  my wallet?
ME: Am I supposed to answer that question?
HER: Yes, the blue one.
ME: Where did you pull money out of?
HER: That's the other wallet... the smaller one. Have you seen the bigger one?
ME: Errrrr.... no.
HER: I have to go back to the car and check.
ME: And you want to know what happened to my hair? They don't even have a shuttle going to the lot.

HER: YAY! It was in the car. Now we can go back and shop.
ME: YOU can go back and shop. I'll just sit in the car and touch myself to this copy of Vintage Guitar.
HER: Ok.   [disappears]
[returns]
HER: You have to pull the car up to the 32nd row.
ME: Good God, what have you bought now? A lawn tractor?
HER: No, its a tree that you can decorate.
ME: Ok, you showed it to me and explained it and all it looks like is black blinds.
HER: No, you decorate with it.
ME: I see.  So, everybody ready for ice cream?
HER: YAY!!!

We pull into the dairy. We notice there will be no trouble at all getting as much ice cream as we want. Provided we wait four hours until the place opens.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Do you know how hard it is to clean exploding cranium from car ceilings?
This was the cherry on our sundae, so to speak.
And on top of this, we still had between one and two hours of advanced arguing and screaming to get home. I picked a bad week to give up sniffing glue.

It's been four days. The only one talking to anyone is the dog.

Someone said one cannot argue there is no female privilege when a female can go online and show her asshole to pay the rent. He's right, you know.
I mention this because one of the sites I visit has a banner featuring online beauties, whose cams you can visit.
I have to admit there are some real stunners.
How can I put this tactfully? I can't.
There are some real woofers too.
Mostly woofers.
I'm not talking about "I like blondes but they're not brunettes" woofers.
I'm talking about "she's so ugly I need to hit myself with an iron skillet first" woofers.
Some are merely overweight. Some are grossly overweight. Are there that many chubby chasers?
Some the plastic surgeon said he couldn't help.
Some the plastic surgeon kicked out of his office.
I wonder if there are stats on their cams. I'm not going to the site to find out.
I think what happened was their parents always called them their gorgeous little princess and they took it to heart, like when Cindy Lauper's parents told her she could sing like an angel.

In the end, I hope they're all doing well.

  • ‘Extremely troubling’: Investigation launched into border agents on horseback seen chasing migrants
  • This is America, where we leap to deal with small visual issues, while we pretend the larger issues don't exist. It's not ok to allegedly whip migrants. But what are we doing about the migrant situation?
  • The Department of Homeland Security, a gift from 9-11, said they were extremely upset over the situation (getting caught) and said there will be discipline (for getting caught). They will do whatever they can to avoid this situation in the future (getting caught).
  • The whipping was stopped immediately (as soon as they got caught) and other forms of crowd control were used, such as making sure no one could take video of what they were doing. Also using half paper clips attached to rubber bands, sledgehammers, poison darts, anvils, and baseball bats.
  • The Biden administration has promised to get on the situation immediately, by creating a diversion in another country, possibly by taxing Afghanistan.
  • If all else fails, Dick Cheney will be brought in to bomb the migrants.

The bad news: because if they did, I'd produce more of it

I have a new page to read. Above the main page, see "It was a short 80 years"

The Car Show

We just got back from our personal car show. I'm not sure why it's our personal car show... perhaps because it's our only car show. With shorts and a clean t-shirt, I felt overdressed. Perhaps I should look into nicer parts of the city - I like it when I'm the ugliest and strangest on the block.

It's always a fun time at the car show, even if you're not a fan of cars. There's all sorts of things to see (mostly cars) and some local businesses. There was a truck selling bbq brisket cheesesteaks. I don't know where you live, but I'm from Philly, the only place on the planet to get cheesesteaks. People know Philly for soft pretzels, cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, and as a sanctuary city. Other states have places called 'Philly Cheesesteaks' or claim to make cheesesteaks, but they're pretty weird: they cut up bits of real steak and put it on bread. BBQ brisket cheesesteaks are something that doesn't actually exist in nature. BBQ is the very tasty universal umbrella that covers everything smoked. Brisket is tasty in any of its many forms, including bbq. Cheesesteak? Cheesesteak has absolutely nothing to do with bbq, like truck bumpers have nothing to do with ice cream.  It's physics.  So we looked but didn't try. The name itself, combined with the fact you couldn't smell it coming from the truck discouraged us.

There was funnel cake.
This is another weird food that has absolutely nothing to do with its name (or reality). My wife loves it, but can't eat it anymore, due to PTSD.  No, really. We ordered some at the Jersey Shore and within seconds, an entire squadron of armed flying rats attacked the funnel cake. It was just like Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, only less funny. Well, it was pretty funny to watch, but that's just me.

There were all sorts of sun-protective tents, under which sat vendors, local folks, and replacement windows (I saw a replacement window stand at a guitar show - these people are really reaching). For my money, the most fun were the politician tents. I don't think there were any actual politicians there, but there were a lot of tents. One had 10 candidate signs, but no political affiliation. Clever (I guess). I was just about to ask when I saw on the table a camo had that said Trump. By Jove, I know which party this is!  They were very nice and accommodating, offering me candy, water, a seat, anything. They didn't blink when I told them I'm a libertarian. They were next to the 6th grade bake sale tent. I'm all for supporting locals, but for some reason I'd rather donate money than purchase 6th grade baked goods. The bump in that icing looked like it was moving.

Speaking of which, we ran into one politician, with whom we are acquainted. Nice lady. Might even have voted for her at some point. I told her I had a great idea for her - since she's running, she can run as a libertarian! She visibly flinched and moved back. "But I'm not a libertarian." I told her that was ok, we just needed to get the name out. In all my years as a libertarian, I've been laughed at, poo-pooed, and blankly stared at, but this was the first visible flinch. She went on to tell us that if she were going to run as an independent, she'd go with the workers party. Never heard of that.... she explains it's actually the Workers Party. They're farther left than the democrats. I couldn't help myself and asked if it's possible to be farther left then the dems. She said absolutely. If she could see inside me, she'd see me internally flinching. I tried with all I had to be socially correct and not be a dick. Wife and many others repeatedly remind me that I have to control myself when they let me outside. This whole social thing reminds me why I blog... it's too much work to be nice and polite.

We bought some bones for Penny from The Dog Bone Guy. Boy, it's a good thing he doesn't sell viagra. He had a small crew of Bernese Mountain Dogs with him, who were overjoyed to see us. I thought they were going to adopt me (I would have been ok with that). Penny went insane for the bone, and sniffed my shirt for a while, smelling OTHER DOGS. Bernese Mountain Dogs (Berners, for short) came from Bernese, where they scale the mountains, looking for lost Saint Bernards. And you believe this because I typed it with authority.

People watching is a hobby. Laughing at people is a way of life. Getting blog material is paramount. We started with our favorite game: Is she pregnant or just fat? We never saw so many ugly critters in one place - and that was just the kids. Unlike the kids, the dogs were well-behaved.

The theme was car show, which is why I haven't said much about it.
We saw lots of 60 year old men, reliving their childhoods through cars they drove to school. We saw lots of 60 year old women, reliving their childhoods with very tight pants and too much makeup. The even older folks were the car owners, some who bought the cars new. I call foul, because if I bought a car in 1957, you would not be able to eat off the engine today. In fact, you'd have a hard time finding the engine. There were some really nice cars, long before my time, which made it confusing when the owners were younger than me. It's some sort of dark magic - like how Jennifer Aniston looks like that at 50. No.

Today all cars have the shifter on the floor. They were on the column at one time, automatic and manual. I saw my first 1970s Chevy with a floor automatic. Going way back in history, the switch for the brights was on the floor, under the emergency brake pedal. Some cars had automatic transmissions operated with buttons on the dash. I really liked the fully restored 50s and 60s cars with cd and mp3 players in the dash. One of the SUVs had a laptop on a stand, like in police cars. The rest of the cars had 8 tracks. <-- that's probably not funny to anyone born after 1980.

If I had lots of discretionary income, after buying most of the expensive lefty guitars on the planet, I'd probably get a late 60s Caprice and drive it daily. We could park another car in the back seat, in case anything happened. Even the smallest cars all had more seat and legroom than anything made today. Some even had bench seats up front (sigh). When you have a dog, you have to have bench seats, so the dog can sit up there with you. This fails miserably with today's single seats (unless you have a rodent breed dog who rides in your pocketbook or cell phone case). There were also two 3-wheel cars, one commercial and one homemade. I understand physics (no I don't) but these things give me the creeps. They look like they're going to roll over as soon as you start them. One had the single wheel in the back, the other in the front. They both looked equally clumsy. I prefer my rides to have a minimum of four wheels. Also a maximum of four wheels.

They had a live band.
The previous sentence is me attempting to be socially acceptable. The old lefty would have written that the alleged band hurt the ears of everybody within 100 yards. The guitar playing just hurt, the singer couldn't, and even if he could, the p.a. was too distorted for anyone to know. But the new lefty just says there was a live band. Look at my muthafunkin progress, yo!

On the way out, I was informed about a group of cheerleaders posing for pics with the cars. Mrs lefty said those two words, designed to chill the very heart of men: Cheerleaders and Fourteen. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I told her I didn't even want to look, because I could probably get arrested for it. I saw them later and thought these girls are going to be popular and make all other girls feel like dirt. Then they'll start on the guys... they will make some guy's life utterly miserable.

I kid... it was fun.
The sad part, as if there could be one, was that it's kind of an end of summer celebration. I dread winter. Never mind that I barely leave the house.. I like to know I could be out in the sun and warmth.

Until next year.....

Horton Hears Voices

A Florida man was arrested after going on a multi-state crime spree, ending with him being found naked, inside a chicken coop in New York. This sounds like meth: discuss.

Dear lefty:

  • If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?
  • The one down the block that has huge branches falling down randomly, because it's being eaten by some bug no one can identify.

We bid fond farewell to Dr. John (Mac Rebennak - 77) who passed from a heart attack. If you don't know who he is, you probably remember his hit "Right Place, Wrong Time." He was a very influential musician (piano and guitar, gruff vocals) and helped keep Louisiana on the musical map.

  • Remember Ring Dings? The small round chocolate cake with white filling and chocolate covering? There's now a vanilla covering and white cake. Trust me on this, they're worth a try.
  • You don't get this kind of information from normal blogs...

This week's imaginary reader participation exercise:
Moon landing: true or hoax?

  • Ancient Jewish curse: may your in-laws be Joan Rivers, Rosie Perez, and Fran Drescher

My life would be even better if I never heard these words or phrases again:

  • guac
  • game changer
  • no brainer
  • imma
  • easy peasy
  • not tonight
  • the best EVer
  • your dog has cancer

Dear lefty:
  • As a future Miss America, how will you make the world a better place?
  • sue the Miss America pageant until they allow men
  • fix everything for the children
  • remove the stigma from having facial hair and wearing ball gowns
  • eliminate abortion after birth
  • legalize drugs - mandate them if necessary
  • put an end to the scourge of doorbell-licking
  • tube top Tuesdays!

Penny's Corner

The chemotherapy continues. Everyone is very happy with her progress and she might not need the final treatment - they're going to re-evaluate her. How does one re-evaluate chemo? Yes, the dog continues to not have cancer? Additionally, this might mean not having to take a third mortgage on the house.

The chemo has been no help whatsoever with her licking my pants and sofa cushions. Mrs lefty doesn't even lick my pants, why should the dog?

Penny loves spending time in her yard. Currently she's installing some large holes in the lawn. She's much more excited about installing holes than I am, but then again, everybody is more excited than I am.

  • In a controversial decision, the BBC has decided to stop airing news. They discovered that some people were sad and others triggered by events in the news and the BBC apologises for any offence it might have caused. Instead, there will be a constant display of puppies, kitties, and shrubbery.

I've been to a total of two car shows, so I'm what you'd call very experienced and opinionated. Actually I'm opinionated to begin with, hence this blog. Also hence the way people remember they had something to do when I show up.

I like car shows, but have no idea why. The cars are nice, many of which were made before my mother ever had the idea she could make babies. Some before my mother ever had the idea she existed.

Strangely, I have only one complaint: next to the 58 Chevys there are always the 2012 Camaros, with more chrome than a dealer's lot of new cars. The engines inevitable have dual quad carburetors and that blower thingie that requires cutting a hole in the hood. How do you drive with that monstrosity blocking your view? Apparently you don't.  It turns out the size of the owner's penis is inversely proportional to the height of the engine (or so I hear). In any case, I don't want to see these things (or their penises) - the older cars are more fun to look at.

At one point I saw something I've never seen before. It was ancient. It had wooden tire spokes. The windshield was a round piece of glass, attached to the steering wheel column. There were no doors. Turned out to be a Ford Model T! It won the award for the oldest car I've ever seen. The old folks who came with it looked like they worked on the assembly line. The sponsor has an ambulance standing by, in case any of the entries died. There's a contingency plan to get the bodies out of there without anybody noticing. They do this by disguising the ambulance as the car from Ghostbusters, so it passes unnoticed.

We remembered that the cars of our youth were not stock if there was a huge engine that came through the hood. Some cars were jokes and junk when they originally came out but now they're old and vintage, like my guitars (and me, sometimes). The restorers truly did a great job, down to the seats and covering. Seeing the late 50s cars made me wistful for the guitars made those years (no, I was not around then). If I can find a late 50s lefty, it's somewhat expensive, in the way houses are expensive. Many of the transmissions on the cars are lacking PRNDLs - instead they have numbers like 1 2 3 4. I don't like that kind. Real men are secure enough to have their gears shifted for them.

Be skeptical when you see people in high places speak against Fake News. They try to make it sound ridiculous, like newscasters talking about people seeing UFOs. It is a fact that the CIA infiltrated newsrooms, like the one with Walter Cronkite, and planted stories as an experiment. They even had people on the payroll. From very early, there was a gentlemen's agreement not to print certain 'interesting' behaviors of presidents (JFK for one). So fake news isn't a recent phenomenon. There are YouTube videos with snippets of newscasters all speaking from a script - all using the same words.

The news now just pushes agendas. You will see certain themes, among them inflammatory stories of people doing damage with guns. You will not see stories about someone with a gun saving others. You will see the talking heads laugh off UFOs. You will see a great emphasis on sports and social media input. Local news is somewhat less biased but generally fluff and downright stupid. If you want news from an alternate viewpoint, you can tune in news from a different country, but they're also pushing an agenda - it's just harder to see.

Some news networks have been caught making things up and staging national news, but they're local and on a set, trying to look like they're on scene. Most news networks are against the president, except Fox. This says people up the food chain are scared. Of course Fox just waves the flag, so they're not much better.

Don't laugh off claims of Fake News. Trump did not invent the claim - he's just the first to verbalize it. You've been consuming it forever.

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .Don't touch that dial
Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor
I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go
