Go Ahead- Smoke Near the Gasoline-See What Happens -or- Forced Vacation, Day 1

Yes, like last year, I have a bunch of vacation days that I have to use or lose. Since they won't pay me for them, I figure I'd use them. Since I don't pay attention well, I was off the month of December last year. This year I paid attention, so I'm only off half the month of December.

Why is it a forced vacation? Because I don't do well without structure (not defined as a wife screaming at me). So while I'm off, my job becomes finding things to do. Anybody with a functional set of eyes could look around the house and find a lifetime of things to do, especially in the living room. Depending on your decorating tastes, the 74 Camaro sitting nose-down may or may not be a keeper. If nothing else, it's really tall, and brings to mind the monolith from 2001 - A Space Odyssey. So the artsy-fartsy among us could consider it an homage to Stanley Kubrick. Or just an absolute original in the Department of the Abstract.

Incidentally, due to the laws of physics, you too can have a monolith in your home. Anything even mildly out of place, like a welding rig or Camaro, left there for more than 3 days, starts to become invisible. You walk past it and it doesn't register. Eventually you catch it out of the corner of your eye and realize it looks pretty good there and you'd miss it if it 'had to go.' This all started with my friend's beautiful sitting room. One day I noticed a large red air compressor on wheels. The following week it was still there. I told my friend that it was a spectacular decoration and she should definitely keep it there. She didn't know what I meant because the laws of physics had rendered it part of the room. So I had to go out and get my own air compressor, in red. The only problem was my house lacking a sitting room. I was flummoxed and I was beat, because I do not have the skill set to add a sitting room (or turn the bathroom into one). I can wield a hammer by the correct end damn near 84% of the time. Same with screwdrivers. I hit 100% with my soldering iron, for obvious reasons.  I guess I could buy a pre-fab shed-like thing, but couldn't attach it to the house, plus it would lack light. So the red air compressor sits unused in the bedroom. Almost unused, but I won't expand that.

So on my first day of Forced Vacation, I was awakened precisely at almost 11am (12:37 New Jersey time). Wife, who was getting into bed (don't ask), informed me it was snowing. This is a dangerous trio: awakened, gloom, and snow. The stupid weather doesn't even have the decency to have sunshine with our snow. I think somebody roofied Mother Nature.

Apparently the mailman snuck up on me and delivered my NEW MEMORY! The laptop's new memory, but it would be great to order my own, right? Then the strangest thing happened: I installed the memory, the laptop recognized it, and everything ran ok. I had to wake Wife to have her explain it to me. She told me "Essentially, it failed to fail." It may take a few days for this to sink in. Anyway, now I can open up 12 programs at the same time, without everything stopping due to no memory. The irony here is that I don't have 12 programs I use, and after 3 programs, the tiny 13" display won't show them anyway. So things run faster and it makes downloading my hamster pr0n a breeze. The memory only took 4 days to arrive, from just under 10 miles away.

But even I know that vacation (even forced vacation) should include more than installing RAM and downloading hamster pr0n. Let's see.... there's..... ummm... and then.... but.... I know - breakfast! Sugar Frosted Chocolate Sugar Bits await me. Oh. No they don't. The store didn't have any. Supply Chain Issues, you know. It's pretty sad when a supermarket doesn't have the most popular breakfast cereal in the world. I think they may have to be reclassified from a supermarket to a market if this keeps up. There's nothing super about it. It now costs more for lunchmeat than to fill your car. Perhaps because it's so expensive, I notice a lot of 'help' when making a sandwich lately. The dog has laser-focus upon the lunchmeat. She's helping me, in case it tries to attack me by falling to the floor. She will throw her body between the lunchmeat and me, then eat it so it's disarmed. I'm thankful for dogs, especially this one. She has a t-shirt that says COCKERS FOR COLD CUTS. She's a lot smarter than I thought. So after being awakened at 11, it's time for breakfast at 3.

And after breakfast, there's napping! And after napping, there's napping. I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm woefully behind on my napping. There are some days I get barely 3 naps.. can you imagine?  It has been brought to my attention that people do stuff and go places on vacation. Really? It's a pretty good bet the dog doesn't do rollercoasters, so that's out. The only guitar store I really want to visit is the Southpaw Shop, all the way at the bottom of the country, in Houston. So it's a pretty nasty drive. Plus if I see an entire shop of lefties, I may not want to come back, and they probably won't let me live there. So I'm a bit limited on places to go. Wife doesn't have this problem: there are shoe stores everywhere. Plus she lost weight and now nothing fits her anymore. WARDROBE SHOPPING! Vacationing looks too expensive. I think I'll spend my time becoming a zen-like one with the couch. Oh, wait... that's what I'm NOT supposed to do. I'll report in as I figure it out.

The Biden administration refused to obey the law and withheld a percentage of the JFK records, which were supposed to be 100% released already.  #Impeach

On another day of forced vacation, I awoke (at noon) to some strange light in the sky. It took me a while to figure what it was. The neighbors all pulled their kids inside and rolled down the shades. If I listened closely, I could hear murmuring, chanting, praying, and of course, the neighbor's continuing construction. I thought the construction guys had a clause that said they couldn't work if the sun came out, but I never really saw the contract.  I know they only speak Spanish because they kept telling the dog to shut up in Spanish and I informed them she didn't speak Spanish, so they gave up.

Although I could see light in the sky, I could also see clouds. Lots of them. They were hanging back, getting their strategy ready to begin their assault. Even though we are allowed 1 or 2 days of sun per week, the clouds are not happy about it and are never far away, just in case. PA has what scientists call Shoe Weather. Whenever it's sunny, people get nervous, waiting for the other Shoe to drop. I heard one parent talking to her frantic children, telling them "It's ok, kids.... it will be gray and rainy tomorrow, just like every other day."

Last year England called and wanted its weather back. This year they called to say they're thankful their weather isn't as bad as ours, and if it's all the same to us, they'd rather we keep ours, please. So a spot of tea and Bob's uncle is the bees' nipple.

Further in the Great Laptop Debacle 2022, my laptop has been received by the manufacturer and is being looked at by their technicians. Impressive  - it only took a week and a half to arrive there. Probably because I didn't want to lose a mortgage payment to the shipper. I can imagine them looking at it.... picture a line of technicians. Shipping hands the laptop to the first technician, who shakes his head, says tsk tsk, then hands it to the 2nd technician. This goes on the larger part of the first day.  Not that I blame them. Aside from the crappy plastic hinge that broke, I mean. Every Monday morning, I wipe the laptop down, using a hideous green brush on the keys. When I took the laptop out of my somewhat dim office (caused by its somewhat dim owner), the thing looked filthy. "But I have a hideous green brush," I thought to myself, as I handed it over to be shipped.

NOTE: do NOT use anything but a soft cloth and a little soap to clean monitors, laptop or external. Anything with alcohol in it will dry out the plastic. No special green cleaners or anything else. Don't apply too much pressure or you too will have to send it back to the manufacturer.

So now it's only 2-3 weeks before my sainted laptop makes its way from Bumfuct North Dakota to my house. Naturally this depends on whether they can fix it and how much it will cost. But mostly if I can afford return shipping. If I were smart, which I am obviously not, I would have purchased another laptop in the meantime, to act as a backup. So I'm still pounding away on the 13" old laptop, only running 32 bit software. On the bright side,  it hasn't ever failed me, and it runs much better with 8g RAM, as opposed to 2g.

While I'm meandering from subject to subject,  I wanted to talk about updating your laptop. If you don't have a laptop, pretend you do and play along nicely with everybody else. In the case of my ancient laptop, there were a few obvious upgrades. Of course you have to decide if this is financially viable, but let's continue. Since I only had 2g RAM and the meter was constantly pegged, I needed RAM, desperately (like television  needs to lose its reality shows). It cost me the staggering amount of $23 to go from 2 to 8g. There is no arguing that upgrade. This also goes for home machines. More RAM never hurts, especially with very popular operating systems starting with W.

I can't do anything about the CPU or the 32 bit operating system. A traditional bottleneck in laptops is the hard drive. Many laptops have tiny hard  drives with poor specifications, like a 5400 rpm drive. These are extremely slow. Yes, you can upgrade to a larger, faster (7200 rpm?) drive, but don't. The answer is to upgrade to a solid state drive (SSD). The performance is so much better, it will floor you. Same for your desktop. It will feel like a new machine. None of these suggestions is very expensive. I've seen SSDs for well under $100. Shop carefully.

The greatest and cheapest upgrade comes when you don't hold the pursestrings: I wanna new laptop. This one's slow.

And just out of fscking spite, the keyboard on the old machine seems to be developing a finicky space bar. Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes I get 2 spaces. Sometimes they really are out to get you.

Why is there a gaming mouse pad? We all know that a regular mouse is $19.95, but you call it a gaming mouse and it's $79.95. But a gaming mouse pad? Does it dispense Monster overcaffeinated drinks? Does it tell Mom to SHUT UP, I'M GAMING IN HERE? Assist in other antisocial activities? When was the last time you used a mouse anyway?

While we're at it, a laptop cooler was suggested for my laptop woes. These are rectangular jobbies with a lot of fans in them. You put the laptop on them and it keeps the laptop cool. I was just about to buy one when I decided to look into the comments. Sure enough, you are supposed to put the laptop on the cooler, but on a surface. This kinda defeats the purpose of the laptop.. you know.... being on your lap. On the other hand, all those fans whizzing probably make an interesting device to have in your lap. Think about it.....

Another Great Reason to Get a Ring

On November 8, for instance, local police in West Covina, California, received an emergency call purporting to come from a minor child reporting that her parents had been drinking and shooting guns inside the minor’s home. When police arrived at the residence, Nelson allegedly accessed the residence’s Ring doorbell and used it to verbally threaten and taunt the responding officers. The indictment alleges the men helped carry out 11 similar swatting incidents during the same week, occurring in Flat Rock, Michigan; Redding, California; Billings, Montana; Decatur, Georgia; Chesapeake, Virginia; Rosenberg, Texas; Oxnard, California; Darien, Illinois; Huntsville, Alabama; North Port, Florida; and Katy, Texas.

Musk's alleged stalker identified; no evidence of ElonJet tracking, report says
Last Wednesday, Elon Musk seemed absolutely convinced that an alleged “crazy stalker” used a Twitter account tracking his private jet to accurately pinpoint the Twitter CEO’s live location at a gas station outside the Los Angeles International Airport

at a GAS STATION??

Musk polls Twitter users on whether he should be CEO - 57.7% want him to quit.

This single act proves Musk doesn't get Twitter.  Say you asked Twitter who Jesus was. The top 2 answers would be 'serial killer' and 'racist'.  So either he doesn't get Twitter or he's a megalomaniac.

Oh.

(You're a) HO HO HO

Yes, it's Xmas 2022. Things are different this year, as we learned at the mall the other day. Rather than staying open ridiculously late, stores are making up their own hours. By the time we were done at the department store, I was dragging Mrs. lefty into the mall, so maybe I could see something interesting. Typical of things lately, we were surprised to find a mall with most of the lights off. At 6pm on a Sunday, right before Christmas.

This particular department store is a very nice one, with friendly employees and stuff other stores don't carry. This was discovered to be another difference in 2022. Most of the employees one could find were nice, but therein lay the problem. We went by 3 sales desks and there were no cashiers. Did the corporate bean counters want to save money by not scheduling employees? Hint: if you don't put people on registers, no one can ring up sales, and it will be a coal-shaped Christmas for you, beanies.  So we eventually track down a cashier with only a few people in line. No, wait, they were employees. Great - we're up! Err... no, we're not. It looked like the purchasing employee was purchasing 1,437 individual gift cards, then teaching the newbie employee how to ring them up. And we stood there, foolishly thinking our turn at bat would come. It didn't. Nor were we acknowledged. Both of us are fairly easy to spot in line, or from a helicopter. But nothing. Not so much as a hello, be right with you.

Employee #3 went back to his station, leaving the 2 on the Ignore Desk to do their thing, whatever that was. #3 left with a spring in his step, a hee-hee worthy of Michael Jackson, and a mustache. So I was not entirely certain I had the correct pronouns. Since the Ignoring continued, we discovered another cashier, halfway across the store and fled. I'm sure they never noticed us leave. I was thinking of a small stink or smoke bomb, which I always have  with me, but Wife warned me just as I was about to pull the pin on the grenade (dammit). So where do we wind up but at the counter where the Pronoun Person works. I thought it was nice of the store to hire... different... people. I had no trouble with whatever he wanted to do or be (provided it didn't involve reality tv), but I just needed to figure things out. 2 xmas ball earrings, a uniform pullover in the shape of a dress, a high, giggly, underage voice, and a mustache. And a tremendous cashier, most importantly. But.... he kinda looked like someone just told him about gender, and he wanted to try them out, at the same time.  Wife was having a blast comparing earrings. I was just thankful we were getting out of there, because I was tired and he was a great cashier.  As is my norm, I wanted a malt. But of course the shop was closed, with the rest of the mall.

I finally figured it out: next time we go through the mall first, THEN she goes to the department store. I'm a little slow, I'm not good looking, sometimes I smell a bit, but I'm entertaining to hang around.

Hey - is anybody investigating where the Flying AIDS came from?

Yet More Bottled Glass

Your love is like    The Roseanne Show without Roseanne

It snowed. I hate it here.
Because I expect winter to be 70-80 degrees, with little humidity, and perfectly sunny. No snow. Ever.
In fact, I expect summer to be like this too.
You doesn't has to be real smrt to has a blog.

I want to complain. OW. What did you do that for?
Oh, sorry, this is getting kicked in the nuts lessons.
Sorry... why would you need lessons in getting kicked in the nuts?
Sir, are you oppressing me?
Not me, I just want to complain.
Ah, that would be 2nd floor, with beds.

I want to complain. Why are there so many mattresses in Complaints.
OH NO, SOMEBODY SAID MATTRESS TO MR. LAMBERT
[and did those feet, in ancient times, walk upon Philly's dirty streets...]

I want to complain.
Get in line.
am in line.
Ok. Do you have a number?
No. Where do I get a number?
It's on the ticket.
Hold on, hold on... I am expected to have a ticket and stand in line?
Yeah.
I'm sorry, this is a very silly sketch and I am not prepared to go on with it.
That's Philly for ya.

Is this Complaints?
No.
The man from Tickets told me to come here for Complaints.
Ok, yes, this is Complaints. We tell people no - it cuts down the traffic.
I want to complain.
Yes, we've already established that. I didn't have to take this job. I'm a theoretical physicist. I just do this for the benefits.
I want to complain. It's this weather thing.
I see. Can you be more specific?
I don't like it.
Is there a part of it you don't like more than others?
Most of it, actually.
Is it the seasons?
To start with, we only have two.
Two, Sir?
Yeah, summer, then somebody flips the switch and we have winter. I think they sold the other two for taxes. But that's not what's bothering me.
Sir, are you currently on any medication and have you taken it recently?
Abuse is downstairs. I want to complain about the weather.
Yes....
It's cold in the winter and unbearably humid in the summer.
I see. And do you have any suggestions?
I thought we could keep it around 70-80 with low humidity all year round.
Then you'd only have one season.
I could live with that.
Anything else?
It snows.
It is the east coast, Sir.
If we get the temperature suggestion I made, we'd only have to see snow on tv news, from other states, and we could all laugh at them. And in Christmas movies.
I'll, uh, see what I can do.
What do you mean, 'see what you can do'? Is this not Complaints?
Yes, it's the largest complaints department in the state.
I want to complain. I want to speak to your boss.
Sir, if you think I'm an asshole, wait til you meet him.

Don't forget, the majority of heart attacks happen while shoveling snow.
I keep trying to remind Wife, but she gets all wide-eyed, citing some sort of imaginary law, stating we must clear snow within 8 hours.
Or what - the Snow Police will get us?

We have to bring up the trash cans too.
Yeah, the Trash Police...

And we still cannot find an enterprising youth to pay to shovel snow (or mow). I guess the youth of America have something better to do. Maybe they're quitting their jobs for Unemployment. Or quitting their job to work at Walmart or McDonald's, for $15/hr. Most likely, sitting in, playing video games.

Drones are coming to get us. It's fun to fly the hobby ones, but the Big Jobbies are there to spy on us and deliver less than pleasant payloads. So here's a great story about a drone delivering a defibrillator in time to save a man's life. He was shoveling snow and had a heart attack (told you so).

  • I had to go back to my old office. Again. I'm less sore this time, probably because I didn't have to play Naked Twister with the racks.

Broadcast radio is trash. It has been trash for years and years.
Never has it been trash in greater quantity than recently. There are a very few people writing the hits today; they're just handed off to the Flavor of the Month singer (sorry, dancer).
To make things more fun, there is now AI software that will create you a song. While this is fascinating on a technical level, it's pretty ugly on an aural level. It's not guaranteed to make you a star, and the company has most of the rights to your song. So go ahead - produce some product. It's all product anyway. Then everybody will want to sound like you. For a month. Good luck.

My employer thinks ahead and wants to make things easier for their slaves employees. When they ask you to do something, they write it out and explain each step of the process. Unfortunately, the explanation is difficult to understand, and the steps are invariably wrong. It goes something like this:

  1. Click link.   (Link takes you to old site that doesn't refer you to new site)
  2. Look for Payroll    (there is no Payroll)
  3. Look for "My last check"   (there is no Payroll. OH, it's under HR)
  4. Print a copy   (you can only use work printers and you work from home)
  5. Check to make sure you're under Payroll   (there is no Payroll)
  6. Your information will be on the left  (it's on the right, 5 clicks away)
  7. Can we offer you a soda?   (soda machines are at work, broken)
  8. Is there anything else we can do?   (system does not understand DIE)

I'm the kind of employee who desperately wants to fix the systems to make things better for everyone. I learned to keep my mouth shut after the Talking to Manglement Incident.

As we mentioned in the last installment, Mrs. lefty is going visiting, and lefty knew he needed a babysitter. He suggested Jennifer Lawrence because they were talking about her.  There has been no response from the Mrs. lefty or the Jennifer Lawrence camp. I have a feeling it will be another lonely period, with no adult supervision. Anything that 'happens' is now on her....

Captivity - Day 57 Deaf Service Elephants don't swim

Have you used a Covid N95 mask and developed Covid-19?
Our staff at Cohen, Washington, Lopez, and Chong can help you get the money you deserve. After a free, at-home, consultation (don't bring that shit into our offices), we can tell you how much we you can expect from the last-minute manufacturer of these masks. The masks were never tested and are not safe for medical use.

So if you developed Covid-19, Covid-20, Covid-25 but not Covid-24, AIDS, Herpes, Chlamydia, mask sores, and sore envy, in which you cannot afford designer masks, call us at Cohen, Washington, Lopez, and Chong. Although you see our very hip minority focus, the people who own the corporation are Philadelphia Jewish lawyers.  The other side hears this and defaults automatically.

Cohen, Washington, Lopez, and Chong - We Have Jews

Something happened today. Everything came to a stop.
Mothers were pulling their children in the house.
Social Distancing was 3', so parents could call their children.
Scientists left town.

What was it?
It was SUN.
And pleasant TEMPERATURES.
We are monitoring this and will report back, if we know anything.
Fat lot of good that will be...

We're still not 'allowed' to go guitar shopping or eat in an actual restaurant. Tonight we're having something Chinese. Hopefully not someone Chinese.
I have no trouble at all with any group (unless they're stupid) but they should probably get a marketer. Taste King? House of Basement? Tool Store? Motorcycle Shed? I'd love to hear their derogatory names for us...Fat White? Victim of MSG? Eat This Crap?

The beaches will be open by Memorial Day!
Nobody knows why they were closed and why they're opening.
New Jersey, long a target of mine, has allowed their citizens the choice: Covid-19 or skin cancer.

The Dutch government has advised single citizens to get a 'sex buddy.'
I wonder if my insurance (or my wife) will cover that.

Captivity - Day 46 HAARP is not for kids, Sally

Windows 10 - Day 46
What a screaming pile of dung.

It ate up 15 valuable Morning Minutes, trying to log into work. There aren't a lot of downsides to working at home, but this is definitely one. Windows spent forever deciding whether and how it wanted to boot up today. A user has no serious input into this decision, up to and including making the laptop airborne, which won't have much of an effect on Windows.  In fact, it probably works better midair than on a desk.

It's cold today, which perfectly matches the air conditioning we needed last night. It's also sunny, but we know that somewhere, there's a large pile of something or other that will go BOOM if we try to enjoy the sun.

Today we added another Wonderful Word to our Pandemic Vocabulary: say it along with me, kids... Clustering. Clustering. Once more.. Clustering.  Clustering is when 10 people or more stand in front of a store window to look at the shoe sales. Clustering is a sin, in everybody's Religious Manual<tm>. Clustering goes against the commandment: Thou Shalt Social Distance. The penalty for clustering, and there's always a penalty, is to carry around a 6' dress of plastic, known as a Hula Hoop or similar, depending on when your religion was invented, to physically keep you 6' away from all of humanity. Do ya really want to wear a 6' dress in public? (We don't care what kind of perversion you get into at home, Chollie, you dirty rat).  So remember: Socially Distance - Don't Cluster!

In addition to the sun playing its seek and go find game, Freedom is starting to shine (cue patriotic music, video of old dudes marching and playing a flute). As horrid as the Flying AIDS was a few days ago, it's not altogether so much of a death-inducing nasal-injected sexually-transmitted death-bringer. There was video of people walking around! Not observing social distancing! There was no video of NY police assaulting couples holding hands. 90 year olds sitting the park. People shopping for tvs instead of toilet paper. Yessir, I think this whole Flying AIDS thing is losing its News Appeal. Mind you, all of the talking heads were still broadcasting from their basements, just in case. You can't make this shit up. I still want to know what's on the shelves behind the on air personalities. You know somebody has to have The Joy of Sex, Sex While Windows is Booting, Booting Sex in the Windows Age, and Why Windows Won't Boot, Even During Sex. We are being deprived of these goodies, cuz we know what's coming from their mouths isn't of any value.

People are starting to pop onto the streets, like spring has sprung.
The funny part of this is that nothing has changed from 2 days ago to yesterday. It's just that the people who are supposed to know better have... no... damn... clue... as to what's going on. They're getting paid A Lot of Money to stand there and tell you Stuff. Each syllable is made up. Every morning it's something else. It affects older people, it affects younger and older people. A sign is your taste being off, but you taste isn't a really good indicator. You will need a respirator. You won't need a respirator. You shouldn't be near anyone. You can be a carrier. The Flying AIDS is killing more people than Godzilla over Tokyo. Oops - it's killing less than any old yearly flu. Hey, let's give our personal aid. Let's bail out corporations! Who did you say is paying for this? You didn't say?

Idiot Governors all over the place are making noise about going back to work. This is actually just a formality, as they get paid by the speech. People have been ignoring their verbal output for a long time.

It's only a matter of time until McDonalds opens its inside sitting area, then it's off to McDonalds. And I don't even like McDonalds.  Then I'll go back to blathering about 'normal' stuff. You'll long for the days of captivity.

Are we on the precipice of what we'll call normalcy?
Let's watch.
Again, help each other.
Who benefits?

Male Pattern Baldness - the Band

I always wanted to call my band Male Pattern Baldness. For some reason, everyone else in the band refused. It wasn't so much a refusal as the physical reaction guys get when you mention getting kicked in the nuts. I had other names too... those merely got ignored.

  • Today was a sign. An omen. The sun was out. As surprising as that was, it was forecast to be out. Something's up. Watch the skies.

Technology Time

Think about the march of technology. The things written in science fiction that are ordinary today. A wireless cell phone that replaces tons of physical utilities. This has created a mountain of useless things that kids born within the last 20 years have never seen, like:

a telephone booth, 45rpm adapter, library, a heavy mechanical phone doubling as a weapon, records, 8 track and cassette tapes, CDs, movies in grubby theaters or from a tape at home for $99, movie rentals, over the air tv with channel numbers, dialup internet, modems, leaded gas, land yacht cars, tuneups with spark plugs and wires, radios operated by a knob attached to a string, round clocks with hands, bigass computers with DOS, Windows 95/98/XP, printer ribbons, parallel cables, floppy discs, 286/386/486 computer chips, round  DIN computer plugs for accessories, adding port and other cards to computers, clean air, the US military in only a few countries, wireless phones, phone lines, busy signals, phones without Caller ID, large speakerphones that clipped off parts of words, answering machines, avocado green/harvest gold, huge wooden console stereos and tvs, black and white tvs with 6" screens, clothesline, washboard, wringer clothes washer, percolator coffeemaker, Lincoln Logs, board games, typewriters, paper notebook, newspapers, heating leftovers on the stove, wired or clicky remote controls, bra stores not carrying lingerie, computers plugged in to routers, written letters with postage stamps, pencils, sex without taking video, 16 year old virgins, verbal only gossip, walking anywhere, sitting quietly, having friends over and talking, smoking on airplanes, only charging things at home, C and D batteries, Radio Shack, only one type of condoms (that you shamefully asked for), cold medicine on open shelves, expensive heroin, soda in gallons, large tires with small wheels, floor-switched high beams, revving the engine to keep the car from stalling, stalling after running over a puddle, bench car seats, station wagons, metal in cars, starting your car with keys, protests against war, square computer monitors, $15 commercial-free cable, ice cube trays, porn magazines, door to door salesmen (non-religious), telling someone off without using the f- word, turn signals, generous employer paid pensions, no copays for anything, bicycles (without helmets), humongous analog reel to reel recording machines, community bulletin boards with 3x5 cards and push pins, Pong, hooking up vcrs and game boxes to the tv, tv antennas, amateur radio/CB, paying cash only for a doctor visit, milk trucks, malls with all kinds of stores and no food court, head shops, malts, drive in movies, handwriting, record stores, guitar solos, music without dancers, full albums played on the radio, radio stations doing whatever they wanted, giggling at gays and transsexuals, humor, walking up steps to get in a plane, liquids/pocketknives/scissors/guns and showing up right before the plane takes off, made in America, jobs for life, college degrees worth more than toilet paper, farms, tollbooth you throw change at, telethons, tv free of feminine products/pharmaceuticals/bladder leakage underwear that's actually pretty, dick jokes that didn't say dick, courtesy, really really stupid phones and tvs, bag and Beam Me Up Scotty phones, pay by minute long distance and cell, fixing electrical things yourself, Tab diet soda, whole milk, paying with cash, police showing up after you call, 2 prong outlets and plastic adapters with a little wire hanging out, Elmer's glue and paste, crayons, never hearing the word 'cunnilingus', waiting for the tv to warm up, unfinished basements, standalone stereos, mono records, head cleaning kits, record brush and fluid, record crates, posters, concert tickets, crystal scanners that could hear phones, soldering irons, neighborhood stores, guitar stores, weather that makes sense, baking cake from scratch, stereos over 1 watt, excitement of hearing the first time anyone said 'ass' on tv, beholding Sipowicz's ass, those little angular car windows in front of the main window, manual windows and door locks, real spare tires, AM/FM radios only, sneaking into Dad's special drawer, 8 or 16mm projectors, waking early on Saturday to watch cartoons, phones without hash or asterisk keys, the joy of sex (the book), record sleeves and foldouts with information, the brown acid, cleaning your pot on record jackets, products designed to last for more than a few months,

It's National Scrapple Day.
Scrapple is a Philly 'delicacy' which is essentially a meatlike substance made from (drum roll, please) scraps. Ponder that for a minute.

I try not to hate stuff before I try it, but the smell of whatever it is cooking is enough to keep mosquitos off your arm in the summer. Wife loves it. This is convenient because she'll never have to worry about me eating hers. In fact, it can sit in the fridge for six years, untouched, with all sorts of new and interesting growths, some speaking languages we've never heard before. I'm kidding - it can sit there for years, undisturbed: you can't distinguish ''fresh' scrapple from six year old scrapple. Philly is better known for soft pretzels and cheesesteaks... you're much safer with either.

  • The FBI issued an alert in September due to the increase of attacks via Remote Desktop Protocol.
  • This should never happen in a professional environment because you don't leave the Remote Desktop Protocol port open. It's like leaving your back door unlocked: burglars have to look for it, but they can walk right in. It's ok inside your network but not toward the internet.
  • Home users are dependent entirely on their cable modems and routers. If they're not set to block by default (they should be), it's up to the user to get in there and close (everything). Anybody recommending this port be used to get to your computer from the internet should be shot, then sent to rudimentary computer school. If you need to remotely operate another computer in your house, it's relatively safe, assuming it's blocked at the router.

Between A.D.D., blurry vision, drugs, and a hyperactive dog, we can never find anything. The running joke is 'staple it to your forehead' so you know where it is and will be reminded. This fails because even the best of us run out of forehead space. This causes a clutter problem, and we're right back where we started.

  • In my house, there's a place for everything. Unfortunately it changes daily.

Hack the Air Force 3.0 is happening soon, wherein 191 countries are invited to hack. Among those countries aren't China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea.  Sure, keep out the guys who have proven they can do it.  When this contest is over, the AF will pay bug bounties. They will also spend 8 months cleaning up the damage from unforeseen hacks:

  • latrine doors won't open
  • planes will confuse Up with Down
  • refrigerators will report directly to China
  • flushing a toilet issues the command to bomb North Korea
  • Mr and Mrs Bob Winglehocker, of Bumfukt, Arkansas, will be awakened by surprise, after the AF computer orders a 1,001 person AF banjo cookoff and crossdressing cabaret held at their house.

Speaking of crossdressers, we're post midterm elections and nothing has burned. Yet.

  • Dear lefty: Phil Poos asks if there are Portuguese Jews.
  • Yes.

Somebody, who shall remain nameless, spilled sugar on the carpet. Someone else, who shall also remain nameless, was asked to vacuum it up. This particular someone forgot. No problem, as Vacuum 2 was activated: the dog found it and cleaned it up beautifully. The only issue was that when she was done, her snout looked like she was a coke addict. No one got a picture and the dog got no more hyper or otherwise dangerous. We just have to be very careful around her with cookies.

  • There are a ton of operating system and app updates available. Please install them immediately: Windows is full of holes and so is anything from Adobe.
  • RELATED: a MS update breaks Calendar and Mail on Windows 10 phones. THERE ARE WINDOWS 10 PHONES? It's the end times.

Since the new way of eating, I've cut way down on my chocolate intake. I've gone from 24/7 to once a day. Not at all coincidentally, I've felt like Advanced Death since around the time I started. Always supportive, my wife bought one of those absolutely humongous bags of mixed candy. This will truly test my will. I will lose spectacularly.

  • I am just like everyone else: I put my pants on three legs at a time.

Much to no one's surprise, Penny is the second dog who would rather nap with his mom than hang out with his dad. Last night his mom heated pizza and put it on the arm of the sofa. Penny promptly pulled a piece onto the floor and started to eat it. This displeased dad loudly.  I am certain that she will not do that again. At least until the next time there's pizza on the couch.

  • Dear lefty: reader Phyllis Moostache asks if dogs have buttocks.
  • Yes.

My coworkers would be disappointed if they didn't hear me say 'I hate Microsoft' at least once a day. They are rarely disappointed. If you're burdened with Office 2016, you know that every meeting invitation automatically gets added to your calendar. Since my company runs on meetings, I have a calendar full of useless meetings (yes, all meetings are useless). I asked Microsoft Help, which isn't. An internet search indicated that it was designed this way on purpose.  One can 'filter' it, which still adds the meeting, but makes it a lighter shade.  I hate Microsoft. MAKE IT OPTIONAL, children of HERR GATES.

Or, as Ben Stern used to say to little Howard, "I told you not to be stupid, you moron."

  • If you missed it, there was a 'small glitch' in the internet, causing Google traffic to be routed through Russia, China, and Nigeria. I'm not the only one amused by this, but it was attributed to a 'misconfiguration' by a Nigerian internet provider.  Sure... blame the black guys.
  • Does it bother anybody else that a single internet provider in China Nigeria can hijack traffic through a misconfiguration? Let's do Faceyspaces traffic next! But seriously, folks... this is the way it was designed, back when the most hostile people on the net were college students.

While having a blast at Faceyspaces' expense, their employees are surveyed twice a year about their sentiment and happiness. Last month showed 52% were optimistic about Faceyspaces' future, down a hair (32%) from 84% the prior year.  Unrelated: according to the Wall Street Journal, the leading Barbie Doll enthusiast magazine, the stock price was headed in this direction too.

Is this supposed to be a funny story? I'm laughing hysterically.

  • a US panel warned against government purchase of Chinese technology. Gee, really?  How long has ThermionicEmissions been saying this? It's just common sense (which explains why it hasn't been followed).
  • Wild guess: in WWII, the Allies didn't buy German technology.

The happy news is that "The fear and uncertainty generated by surveillance inhibit activity more than any action by the police." No, wait, did I say happy? It's a good read.

One of the hallmarks of good customer service (who cares) is not simply saying no - it's providing a workable alternative. I already have - you're just not reading. How's that for customer service?

No, wait.. it means you really need to consider doing things as safely as possible. Use duckduckgo for searches, because it doesn't track you. Get rid of anything Google, Yahoo, Faceyspaces, Instagram, etc, including email. Set up at least 2 email accounts: one for important stuff and one for junk. Use a decent, encrypted email service like Protonmail (free for basic). Use https for every web connection (or use an extension like HTTP Everywhere, which will do it automatically for you). This will sound weird, but use cash for all transactions. Not only will it protect privacy, your card won't get skimmed or stolen. In the name of all that's holy, don't use free wifi without a VPN. Or don't use it at all.

Turn your cell phone's wifi off when you leave your house. If you can't remember, a program called Macrodroid can be set to do it for you.

  • Several Australian universities have BANNED sarcasm because it's a "form of violence." I'd be thrown in jail for several lifetimes.
  • Professor - he hit me with sarcasm and I need a safe room, with puppies.
  • The stupid continues, and it's overwhelming.

Speaking of good customer service, a Cryptopay user was denied a password change, so he did the only thing a responsible adult could: mailed them a bomb. Fortunately no one was hurt. The package sat around for five months before someone got around to almost opening it. The sender had a bit of a criminal history, including sending a bit of the old white powder to lawmakers. It turned out to be coke and the lawmakers dropped all charges. Just because I made that up doesn't mean it didn't happen.

  • You're going to be shocked.... One Million Kids Tracker Watches were deemed unsafe because any old hacker can access them, allowing them access to your child's location and pictures. Not that you don't post that on Faceyspaces anyway....
  • Imagine something called a Tracker Watch becoming a tracker....

So how about the personalized concert lineup the ticket people sent this week?
Jon Bellion's coming! Who the hell is Jon Bellion? Iron Maiden, which is at least close to my wheelhouse. Pink. Pink? I'm starting to think this personalized lineup thing is a lie.  Jeff Lynne's ELO - dammit - they finally got one!  While I know who Lindsey Buckingham is, there's also DAWES. Is this what people from Boston use to get into a house? Seinfeld!!!! God, I hate Seinfeld, although I know who he is. Who are these comedians...  who aren't funny? Kris Kristofferson. The man's multitalented. Trailer Park Boys? I don't know who they are, but I read they're now on the FBI terror list. They must have said something nasty to someone at some time. As a Ron Paul voter, I was on the list too. Let's not leave Sebastian Maniscalco off the list. Remember: you can get free innoculations against Sebastian Maniscalco at your local pharmacy for no copay. It's pretty damn serious, which is why the FBI is encouraging you take the shot. St. Paul and the Broken Bones are also coming. It sounds almost like my previous musical comedy act: we were so bereft of rhythm and grace, that there were inevitably broken bones. Galactic ft. Erica Falls will also grace our area. It would be more efficient to call themselves Galactic Falls, but either way, I'd have no idea who they are and no desire to spend my hard-earned money.  Mumford and Sons. Hmmm.. we know all about them. Banjos. Interbreeding. I can't even type the name without breaking out in laughter. 98 Degrees... sounds like a really HOT act (I apologize profusely for that). Last but perhaps least, The Noise Presents Nothing More. I have no idea, but the idea of Nothing More in the way of Noise sounds wonderful. When I get famous, people will be taking shots at me too.

Gorillas Gluing Tweed

Here it is, the day I've been waiting for.
THE SUN!
It's out and as bright as ever.
It is confusing the hell out of me.

It makes me want to do stuff.
I'm full of energy.
I should really clean.
Yup. Clean.
I feel like cleaning.
Like I feel like going outside in the 41 degree sunshine and dancing naked.

It's 2018.
Have you noticed how quickly things get into public domain after they happen? I'm talking politics and Bad Stuff in general.
Notice how long after a scandal breaks, we get the news and frequently the perp. Same with mass shootings (except Las Vegas).
Russian collusion in the election. Russians and Trump. Obama henchmen, entrenched in high positions. Leaking on a massive scale.

[Jay Leno voice]
Hey, what's with these mass shootings, especially in schools.
Before Columbine, it barely happened.
Now it's every few weeks.
Are the kids that mad about homework?

Faceyspaces has fired Cambridge Analytica for harvesting the demographics of 50 million subscribers, without their knowledge, and providing it to the Trump campaign. The cynical (you rang?) would say they were fired because they helped Trump. The slightly less cynical would notice that Faceyspaces said, "If there's anyone violating personal information, it's going to be US."

  • In case you missed the news, gay sex robots are on the rise, so to speak, at a brothel in Spain, allowing straight men to experiment with homosexuality. Among other features, the doll has a customizable penis. What is a customizable penis? Can you order colors, sizes, glowing, and monogrammed? Does it go limp and ask for Viagra?
  • I don't care what you want to do with/to the doll or what you do at brothels, or what you do at home - it's none of my business. My small question is how straight men experiment with homosexuality. Wouldn't they fail to be straight at that point? Do law-abiding citizens experiment with thievery?
  • At the brothel, the dolls are available for rental. In other news, businesses in Spain are hiring maintenance people to clean lifelike dolls at hourly intervals.

Pelosi Watch

To cheers from the masses, Nanci Pelosi announced her retirement in 2016. She decided to stay on to ensure Washington had at least one woman in power. The bar is pretty low, apparently. We used to vote for candidates based upon their lies qualifications. Now we vote for them based upon their plumbing.

Pelosi wanted to let everyone know she's not going anywhere. Some Democrats are running against her because she's politically toxic and they don't want her as  their leader. If I were a democrat, I'd vote for that senile old guy with the coke bottle glasses on the Sopranos. Oh wait, he's already there.

Highlights from Pelosi's speech to female congressional candidates:

They tell me my medicine isn't working, but I say HUNGRY HUNGRY HIPPOS.
We will not stop until California is 99% illegal aliens. Who among us hasn't had a gang bang with Mexicans and their horses - amirite, ladies?
I promise more rocks in salads.
And in closing, I say vote for Trump in 2020!

In a 6 minute video, Nancy has 23 brain glitches while giving a speech at the Office of Strategic Services. She's the perfect candidate to lead both political parties; old, frail, and failing.

Who's more unstable: Pelosi or the people who keep re-electing her?

On the other hand, she's a goldmine of material.

  • In England, a man kicked out of a club took revenge by ramming his Suzuki  into the club. Lives were saved when the Suzuki crashed into the front window of the club and immediately collapsed into a small plastic ball. Police escorted him away but declined to charge him, saying that the way people in the club laughed at his little thing was punishment enough.

Over in Kabul, parents named their child Donald Trump, hoping that he would be as successful as his namesake. This is not going over well for some reason. Some Faceyspaces users have issued death threats, forcing the parents to close their account.  I say anything that causes people to close Faceyspace accounts is a good thing, even death threats.

This poor child has no idea what awaits him as he meets other children. Other youngsters who had a rough childhood are Leslie Neilsen, Marion Morrison (who couldn't take it and eventually changed his name to John Wayne), and Bernie Schwartz, who changed his name to Tony Curtis, to make himself sound less Italian.

  • What flavor are white jellybeans?
  • speaking of which, I'm a huge fan of Jelly Belly cinnamon and hot cinnamon. It's been a while since I consumed an entire pound of them, so I went to Amazon, where everything's cheaper. A pound of frickin' Jelly Bellys runs $9-12. Sometime in the near future, people will abandon hard currency and bitcoins, trading instead in Jelly Bellys. The government will announce a War on Jelly Bellys. Every airport will contain Jelly Belly detecting dogs and air ionizer testing machines. China will start counterfeiting Jelly Bellys, some better than real ones. TSA agents will be retrained to check all possible hiding places for Jelly Bellys. You will be prohibited from carrying more than 3oz of Jelly Bellys on the plane. Shoe and crotch bombs will no longer be searched for, along with guns. Huge ships and little cigarette boats will be stopped. Illegal aliens will be pushed to the side, as customs agents swarm the boats, in search of the sugary little devils. Women will purchase $1,200 Coach bags, with a small, undetectable pouch for their Jelly Bellys. The underground trade in Jelly Bellys will far surpass all narcotics combined. Children with dead eyes will wander the streets, asking people, "hey man - got any Bellys?" The stock market will have trillions in activity on Belly futures.

A gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo has been walking around on two legs when carrying something. Keepers say he doesn't like to get his paws dirty. He even avoids mud.

It's not bad enough that our chemicals are turning frogs gay, growth hormone from cows is getting into our bodies, and there's Prozac in the water... now we have OCD gorillas. When he's not out gathering food, he's washing his paws.

* My mom said that when I was little, I came in and washed my hands every time they got dirty. My wife says I need to get out of the house and get my hands dirty. You cannot please women.

Upside Down World

  • A Democratic congressman from Long Island implied that Americans should grab weapons and oppose President Trump by force, if the commander-in-chief doesn’t follow the Constitution.
  • Rep. Tom Suozzi made the remark to constituents at a town hall last week, saying that folks opposed to Trump might resort to the “Second Amendment.” This guy essentially threatened a sitting president. Oddly enough, that's one of the things the Second is for.
  • This is the party that wants the Second Amendment destroyed. That doesn't want you to have guns. In unrelated news, republicans are urging women to have abortions if democrats don't pass anti-abortion legislation.

The pope condemned prostitution as torture and asked for forgiveness for the men who patronize them.
-- no word on child molestation.

  • The Austin Bomber done blowed himself up, as police got close. It was rather considerate of him. He saved the city a lot of money in court costs
  • The police believe he is responsible for all the Austin bombings. This is slightly different than the previous evening, when the explosion at Goodwill was not related to the bombings at all.
  • The police accessed the bomber's Google search history and discovered that he was looking up other Austin addresses. This proves the need to use duckduckgo.com, which doesn't track you, plus set your browser to forget everything you do, or browse in private mode.
  • President Trump tweeted "AUSTIN BOMBING SUSPECT IT DEAD. Great job by law enforcement and all concerned!"
  • Twitter and Reddit exploded with the news that the president tweeted in all caps and condemned him as stupid and a dumb motherfucker.

A woman in Spain died from an allergic reaction to bee stings. While this isn't a rare phenomenon, she died during a live bee acupuncture procedure, where bee stings are used instead of needles. If the procedure hadn't worked, doctors were going to attempt the live elephant trampling procedure, which uses elephants instead of running the patient over with a car.

California's Stupid Backfires

  • One day after Orange County, California, supervisors voted to spend more than $70 million to house the homeless, residents in three rich cities expressed alarm about a proposal to set up "camp" shelters in their communities.
  • People in the communities are apoplectic. They're crying NIMBY! (not in my back yard).
  • Some homeless are currently in hotels. Since we haven't been able to afford a vacation since the Iraq War, we're flying to Orange County next week, and claiming to be homeless. We will demand a nicer hotel, in a better neighborhood. One with a view. Close to the beach.
  • To date, California has provided 80% of the country's GDP (Goofy Domestic Product, which measures the ridiculous and humors news).

Axe-throwing is gaining popularity. People are flocking to New Jersey to throw axes. They are going back home at record rates, when they discover that you have to throw the axe at a wood target.

  • New York City, in a desperate bid to out-stupid California, has proposed a bill that would disallow smoking while walking. This is the same city that protected people from the scourge of soda by banning containers over 24oz.
  • Next week, New York City will solve their burdensome traffic issue by banning cars.

In a desperate bid to out-stupid his entire party, Joe Biden said he would have 'beat the hell out' of Trump in high school. Trump really brings out the humanity in people.

  • The bad news: there's a box that unlocks up to date iPhones.
  • The really bad news: local police are buying them.
  • not that we have much of a Fourth Amendment as it is....

After the Faceyspaces debacle, if you're silly enough to remain connected, here are a few ways to protect the micron of information you have left.

And while we're on the subject, a fellow downloaded the data Faceyspaces has on him. There were two years' worth of phone call metadata from his Android phone, including names, phone numbers and the length of each call made or received. Is this ok with you? This is just the beginning.

  • According to Bloomberg, the music business is seeing its fastest growth in more than 20 years.  Don't encourage them.

The Wall Street Journal informs us that the demand for American sperm is skyrocketing in Brazil.  Wealthy single women and lesbian couples are the big buyers.  I've seen quite a few Brazilian women and I'd fly there to donate personally.

  • Video of the Las Vegas shooter has emerged. Six months after the tragic event. It doesn't take six months to edit video. Within a few days, the Austin bomber was identified and dead. This pattern repeats, almost unfailingly.
  • I have no idea what anyone's up to, but it doesn't take a seasoned detective to notice something's off. Where there's smoke...

Perfume. There?

It was a good morning. Both of us (and the pets) were almost awake, getting ready to go to work and other places. Lunch was packed and I was suddenly face-to-face with my wife and her beautiful new purple shirt. What made it more beautiful than other shirts, purple aside, was that it showed more chest than normal (no naughty bits, in spite of this blog's theme). So I gave her a nice, romantic kiss in that general area. We were impressed but the pets went about their business, non-plussed; one appearing starved and the other waiting for the starving one's food.

Fortunately it was time to go to work. When I say fortunately, I am fortunate to have a job. I am, however, still allowed to bitch about being up in the morning. When in the car, the wife ordered me to scrape the windshield. Of course I had to scrape the windshield.. I was already in the car.  This is a metaphor for our relationship.  It's also a direct statement about the weather here.  As we know, Pennsylvania's state bird is the cloud, and this lovely display of weather did nothing to dispel that fact: it was miserable, gray, and had frozen drops all over the car.  We know the sun exists, it's just that we wonder why it doesn't come round to visit now and again.  Anyone following the news will know that the Northeast has been threatened with snow for the past month. Lucky for us the weather forecasters are always wrong and we've barely gotten any snow.  Instead we've gotten frigid temperatures and bits of precipitation, almost constantly.  Last weekend we hit forty degrees and the bikinis were out all around.  Brian Williams saw his shadow and won't be on tv for six weeks.

So as I was finishing up the windshield, I detected a really horrible taste developing in my mouth.  It got worse and worse until I finally realized where it came from: my wife's chest.  Apparently women put perfume there. And I inadvertently ate some of it.  Off we went to Dunkin Donuts, for some coffee to get the taste out of my mouth. Other candidates were soda, windshield cleaner and lye.

I know I'm late to the party but I was/am so sick of the Stupidbowl that I almost can't describe it. But I shall anyway. In an unearthly first, I was invited to attend a party. In an even stranger first, I accepted, largely as this was my best friend and there were likely to be football-free zones.

There were, indeed, football-free zones, sorta, but there were still too many televisions (defined as more than zero or one).  I'm kinda like Charlie Brown and Lucy (or Homer Simpson) with televisions: I look at the motion, realize it's sports, look away, then see the motion again and look....

I don't care who Brady Bellechek is and don't want to hear his name anymore as long as I live.  It's not enough that there is a game.. I have to hear about it until I'm blue in the ears. I hear about it on the news station. I hear about it on the rock station.  I even hear about it on the public radio station, which I had hoped would be free of sports, at least after the first day.  The only thing worse than this is the item, and I use the term loosely, about deflated balls. I have no real idea what's going on here but I have been bombarded by it every moment of every day, no matter whether it's television, radio or the web.  The first time I heard anything of this, it came up on my alarm in the morning. I can be excused from incredulity (and sense) when something starts talking at me before seven in the morning.  As I grew further awake, I heard something about deflated balls and just assumed this was some kind of comedy routine. It became a really popular comedy routine when I noticed that the evening news and even Sunday's edition of Shoot the Press mentioned it.  If they have so much damn trouble with their balls, why don't they ask the cheerleaders to blow them back up and get on with the event? The politicians must be up to something when this is the lead story for days. You'd think that there was a Kardashian involved, for all the press coverage.

Yesterday in England was the first Visit the Mosque day.  This was a hastily conceived bit of press, thrown together after the Charlie Hello attacks, designed to invite outsiders into mosques to prove that Muslims are not all terrorists.  One Muslim lady complained about having to apologize all the time for the actions of the terrorists.  I suspect she should be having that conference with the terrorists, not the press.  The theme of the day was We'll Blow Up that Bridge When We Come to it. Seminars were offered too: Be Nice to Christians Day, Not Murdering Your Neighbors, and Improvised Explosive Devices.  All of the usual British suspects, with all of their comical British accents, ventured out from their quaint little towns to inspect the mosques. They were declared fit and now life can continue in England (at least until something blows up there).

NOTE: be careful reading this blog, as it may be booby-trapped. And boobie-trapped. Furthermore, it may explode.
