Keith Richards: Arthritis changed my guitar-playing

Clapton has arthritis too. It's a crime.
People pick on Keith, but I aspire to be Keith. No, not the sheer amount of heroin ingested.. I want to make it to my 80s, playing guitar with arguably the most famous rock and roll band ever. If you ever doubt this, look at his face when he plays. He's got a huge smile; what more can anybody want out of life?  Well, he has a smile and more vintage guitars and amps than God.

  • Still no Left Handed History Month....

People tell me I complain too much about the rain here, where England called and said it wants its weather back. Well, perhaps people would complain if anybody talked to me. With a fun fall fair this Saturday, Wife let me know it would rain this Saturday, like it has most recent Saturdays. I don't complain for no reason, not that it wouldn't be fun. Why Saturdays? Maybe because rain's just a throw of the dice every day here, where Seattle called and is jealous. Arizona called and laughed hysterically. Texas was laughing so hard, it couldn't pick up the phone to call. There were actually LIS (Laughter Induced Spasms). We are the tropical rainforest of Pennsylvania. It's very sunny and nice today, but that's because the weather knows we have nothing to do after work and is just mocking us.

Just yesterday I saw 2 occurrences of sun. They were swiftly and violently dealt with.

  • Something came up the other day and I thought my mom would like it. Then I stopped short, realizing the call would be long distance, incredibly so. Guess I'll have to get used to that....

I just read a short story about defining moments in life.
I'm trying to remember if I had any...by definition I had to....
  1. first kiss and boom-boom, the girl who introduced me
  2. graduating from taking apart vacuums to taking apart computers
  3. adopting Joe Cocker Spaniel
  4. discovering activities involving a dwarf, chandelier, donkey, and chocolate pudding
Send me a comment with a few of yours.

Turn the tv off, please.

I would love to. Hmmm... how do we turn the tv off these days. Oh, I got it...  hit the remote. Now.. which remote? Where is it? Ok, I don't have time to excavate - I'll just go to the tv and power it off manually. Oh no, some sort of whipping arm for the armored blender is in front of the button. Obviously I'll have to move it first. I sure hope the power button hasn't moved - last time it took 2 weeks to chase it down: it had moved to the guest bedroom

New York Bill Would Require a Criminal Background Check to Buy a 3D Printer

New York is a really silly place. Apparently they feel inadequate in the silly department, to California and want to do something about it. A bill Would Require a Criminal Background Check to Buy a 3D Printer. Remember, this is the same place that outlawed 32oz sodas. Will soda intake be part of the background check? What if you're printed a lot in the past? You forgot to send your mother flowers for Mothers Day? You were late on your taxes? Buddy, you won't be able to buy a regular printer.

There's a yearly outdoor fair around this time. We have it on the calendar. It's a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, so everyone can attend. And when I say everyone can attend, I mean it's going to be cloudy and rainy for the entire three days.

Now that I think about it, we don't get many fairs or circuses or carnivals. I think this is because they know to avoid the area, unless they need their equipment watered.

Sunday: "Hey, Honey, it looks like there's a break in the clouds. Maybe we can go to the fair. Let me check the hours. Ah, they close in fifteen minutes. Never mind, then. Let's go watch the trash cans instead."

Captivity - Day 26 Social Distancing from my family

Probably because the manufacturing is done cheaply, I tend to scratch the letters off keyboards. Last week it was M and N. Even though I don't look at the keyboard, I'm now mixing up N and M. It's like I've got eyes in my fingers. Or maybe I've been inside too long.....

Since the last vacuum fought and won, tonight is the really cheap vacuum. I'm saying this because maybe if I say it, I'll actually do it. Odds are strictly against it.

I got an email from my car: it misses me.
So does the vacuum.

The doctor called, checking on the new medicine. I told him to hold on, while I caught the purple giraffe in the kitchen. He said something about dosage adjustment and got off the phone quickly....

I have a harem at work. Working from home is making things very difficult.(especially the spankings)...

When your doctor does telemedicine and can't quite get the video working, should you find a different doctor? Good thing it's not the psychiatrist.

I would stand 3' from a random stranger, not wear a mask, go out for no particular purpose, drive 95 mph, not shelter-in-place, and sit inside a restaurant, all so I could go to a guitar show. I miss them, like Madonna misses facelifts.

Another side effect of the constant rain is that the grass grows like mad. As we know, I'd rather cut my own limbs off than mow. That said, the neighbors have taken up mowing. Working from home has lost its luster. The next door neighbors are now dueling with the electric tool neighbors for stereo cacophany supremacy. The next door neighbor doesn't have a lot of grass, so I think she's mowing the same patch over and over again, to annoy me. 8 hours later, still going. Perhaps they're replanting the grass, one blade at a time.

UPDATE: I vacuumed AND mowed. The ($&#ing mower took me for a header on the steps. Neighbors are already nervous - I can't shoot the thing.

Sometimes You're Just a Fish on a Telephone Pole

Twas the day of Christmas, and all through the house
Only one of us was stirring, with no computer mouse.

One of the many wonderful things about living together is the traditions you develop. Over the many years, we've developed many traditions. So there are a lot of traditions but no standards.

I just got done 'putting up' the tree.
It's a good 7' tall.
How did I get it in the house, you ask?
I dragged it, in pieces, from my lovely neighbor, who had a few too many. I don't know if she has a religious issue and likes to keep a lot of them, just in case, or she has a mental issue and likes to keep a lot of them. just in case. This one came in a box, which is a great way to transport your tree home.

I put it together, excited because the lights were already there and wired. My main experience was one of dust. In the basement, from where I carried it. Somebody didn't close the box and it got kinda dusty.

When I say it stood 7' tall, I mean when properly assembled and without the top section leaning over at a 30 degree angle.  At least it had lights. Well, it would have lights, as soon as I could find an outlet. I knew there were lights plugged in last time, so there had to be an outlet.. I just couldn't find it. I can't find an elephant in an empty parking lot. I located one outlet, but the active sparking  dissuaded me.

When I say it had lights, I mean it had lights on the top half. The ones on the bottom half didn't work. I looked around for loose wiring, fearing one bad bulb, which took the entire bottom string out. I found one plug sitting there, but nothing to plug into it. It's 2019, I thought.. plug 2 females together! Better not. I found the male half, plugged it in, and was graced by absolutely nothing. No lights. It's probably mad at me for hate in not letting 2 female plugs go together.

So we have a fake tree, with lights on the top half, no colored lights, no blinkies, and the top bit is leaning left at a 30 degree angle. It's like a Charlie Brown Christmas, but with a larger tree. And fuck it - it's ours!

Unfortunately it's blocking 1 of the 2 windows that let light into the house. There are no others. The house was built in a quantum field, across several multiverses, so when it's rotated 90 degrees, then 180 degrees, sun never shines through the windows. They could have saved thousands by not putting windows in.

There are huge, decoration-like thingies in the window, which were not there on the Eve. Some are red/green, some are blue/white. Blue is generally for Hanukkah, which, I believe, is not celebrated in the house. But very little surprises me.

So there's a very strange and malformed tree on Christmas day, blocking the window; plus decorations hung late Christmas Eve, while I was entertaining in bed without an audience, via my Mattress Dancing, laughing, and random screaming.

You have no idea how happy I am. This is a 102% improvement over last year, when the tree continued its failure to come out of the box and the ornaments weren't even a thought (except buying new ones to replace the long-smashed ones). The year before was the year the kit tree arrived, so we didn't remove it from its box out of respect. The decorations were thought about, but remained true to the tree and never left their boxes (including the new ones, which were piled near where the tree usually goes, where no one would find them).

There would be presents, but I don't think anybody got around to buying them. The presents are for the (internal) kids, who love Christmas, the Leaning Tree of Pennsylvania, and decorations that materialize overnight. Maybe Santa brought them. Maybe Satan - who knows. I know there must be presents, as there are a ton of unopened brown shipping boxes all over the place (Fedex has a truck parked out front from November til Christmas). Since I do the wrapping, maybe most of the gifts are in the basement from the last few years. Unfortunately we sent someone down there last year to search for the past few years' gifts and never actually heard back from him... I'm feeling a little sick... perhaps I need a break.

The great thing about dissociation is what we call Christmas all year around. You can literally wrap the same presents over and over, and they're new each time!

I specifically ask that no one get me anything. Although it sounds a bit Bah Humbug-y, it's better this way. I'm a little off the beaten path (really?), so people don't know what to get me. This results in the most bizarre gifts... cologne. Sports Stuff. Wrong size t-shirts (from my mom). Things made from apples (I'm allergic). A set of postcards picturing outhouses (ok, that was cool). Beer (don't drink). Surgical tools (I pass out at the sight of blood). Barbie car seat covers. Underwear (women's... hey). A welding kit (used). Gasoline purity tester (they want me to be safe before I drink). And a ten foot pole, for trying to wake Wife up before the late afternoon. My Christmas stocking came with a garter belt (I stopped asking years ago). The dog got a ton of stuff, including many valuable stuffed animals belonging to the wife.

The children were all snug in their beds, because it was 2:00.
2:00pm.
I'm awake because we're supposed to go to the family party. She's asleep because it's her family. I spend most of my time there hiding from loud children. And loud adults. The nicest present I ever got was my own panic room there, that I can sit in and not be bothered, while still getting credit for showing up. I say hello to most family members first - do you think I'm rude? This is what happens when you put 73 people in a house designed for 5, and put out 4 chairs.

There sure are a lot of dogs there, which means I have someone to talk to, but Penny, and before her, Marshall, couldn't go because they don't like dogs.  Just a chip off the old block... I don't like some of their owners. Besides... when I don't hide, after a while, Wife signals that I'm doing that thing she doesn't like... what was it... oh yeah - talking.  It's becoming more tolerable, though. The adults talk and everyone under 30 stares at their cell phones. Some of them are texting each other. These will be the first people to get the Brain Chip.

My family is doing something too. I'll be damned if I know what it is. They stopped inviting me after the sheep incident (don't ask). I only get invited when I'm standing there and someone else says the party will be a lot of fun. They turn to me and say, "Oh. We're having a party. Last minute. Open house. You can come. Leave the dog at home - you have no idea what she does to the deer."

I'm expecting a new guitar.
I won't get one, but I'm expecting it.

In his mercy, my boss gave me time off. I got half of Christmas day this year!
What have I done with it?
Brought up the xmas tree, mowing down everything in its path. Waited for everyone to get up. And typed this shit.
If this ain't an existential crisis in the making, I don't know what is.

In answer to my Existential Agita, it came to me yesterday... my place in all this.
I work to make sure everyone else gets presents.
Like some sort of warped Santa Claus.
One that's not particularly jolly.

UPDATE:
Mrs lefty has a headache so bad, Mussolini named a child after it.
Ain't goin' nowhere.

UPDATE to the UPDATE:
In violation of my strict No Gift Policy<tm>, a very nice child got me a set of wireless ear podlike thingies. The thing that concerns me is that they came out as Apple products, so my android phone may reject them.

Credit where it's due: last summer Mother Nature did a tremendous job on sunshine - we had lots of it. Now that we're back in Cold Season, we're back to 6 days of rain per week. People are jumping off buildings.

For some strange reason, it's sunny out today.  Then cloudy. Then sunny again. I walked to the window only to discover it was sunny, but it was also snowing. I hate it here.  I have no problem with Arizona's 100+ degrees with little humidity and no clouds.

The army put together a group to study Remote Viewing, as documented in the movie "Men Who Stare at Goats." In short, remote viewing allows a person to 'see' something that's somewhere else, from their chair. I hear you can also view things from times other than current.  The only problem is that you are not viewing things like a picture; you're getting impressions of features. Richard Dolan, ufo researcher and author, interviews Tracey Dolan (his wife) on remote viewing (she's a viewer). This is not a conspiracy theory - it's documented fact, and most people have the ability to do it, with a little training.

Doggie Diary

Hi, diary, it's Penny.

After running away from bad people, I went to live with other English cockers in a southern state. Six months later, I got on this thing called a plane, which absolutely sucked (no treats) and went to my new home.

Day 1
The people are nice. I like my new house and yard.
It's cold here. Very cold.

Day 2
I really like my new mommy and daddy. They give me treats and rub my belly. I sleep in their bed. Sometimes I let them lay on their pillows with me.

My yard isn't as big as down south, but it's big enough.
There are many birds in my airspace and squirrels to chase.
There are many people walking by my house to bark at. Repeatedly and loudly.
But it's gray. Always. And still cold.

Day 3
Mommy gave me this thing called whipped cream, which I ate from her cup. I love her.
It rained today.  I remember sun.

Day 4
Dad has a temper, but he rubs my belly a lot. I curl up on his lap and he calls me his spaniel seatbelt.
There's some white, cold stuff coming from the sky. I've never seen it before. It's disgusting. And the sky is still gray.

Day 5
It was sunny!!! Yay!!! From 7:45 to 7:46.
I got chicken for breakfast. It was good. I want more.
It's cold and gray, but at least it's not snowing.

I love my parents, but somebody please get me out of here!
I can take them down south, where it's nice.
Dad's right when he says it's not a climate - it's a plague.

Here I am, helping fold the laundry

It's Raining Trees

It's been a rough month this past week.   Finding out about my fried dying, back pain, the wife's three-day migraine and other jocularities combined for an interesting week.  Seemingly out of the blue, my wife picked up a postcard reminder that Renningers had a musicians' flea market happening and today was the final day.  We chose to view that as a Sign that we should get out of the house.

I woke up to gray, overcast skies.  In other words, it was a normal Philly day.  We checked weather online and decided to go; everything was covered anyway.  My wife decided to check her directions online, which I thought was a little weird, as she drives there the same way every time.  She came up with a more direct way.

Off we went, traversing the mighty Pennsylvania Turnpike, in all its gray glory.  Whoosh we went, past the exit we normally use.  I figured the new directions should get us there more efficiently.

Twenty minutes later, I asked my wife if she checked the directions.  What was the advantage - time, speed, directness to our destination?  She said yes.

This should have been a clue.

Further off we went, passing places with names I couldn't pronounce, nor would I care to.  As we got much closer, we went through Pottsville (no, really) then a few tiny little places where no one in their right mind should live.  Seriously, I was raised in a row house in Philly.  I moved to the `burbs as soon as I could.

Corn comes from the store, not the stalk.  Meat comes wrapped up, as it should.  Marshall the cocker is the closest we have to animals around here and I like it that way.  So it was bizarre to drive through these little hamlets with all of the stereotypes in full attendance. There were even two fat good-ole boys, sitting shirtless on the porch in their rockers.  One town even had a restaurant - a real fancy kinda joint with an Eyetalian name and everything.

For some strange reason the directions were completely accurate, down to mileage, and we hit Renningers exactly when we should have.   Only this didn't entirely look like the Renningers we usually visit.

I looked at my wife and asked her if she got directions to the wrong Renningers.  She looked at me and said she had no idea there was another Renningers.  Sure enough, my blonde wife obtained driving directions to the wrong Renningers.

I was not amused.

In fact, I was beyond not amused.  I stupidly thought that getting out of the house would be good for us, given the past week's festivities.  Nothing raises the spirits like guitar gear and Retail Therapy<tm>.  I was largely agitated that I had been separated from my bed for this long in this weather, using that much gas.  I suggested an immediate return to the house, where Marshall and my bed would be waiting for me.  Since my wife gave up sleep for lent, I mostly sleep alone anyway.  Marshall likes to barge in and spend some quality time on the bed, but only if the air conditioner is running and he can leave the bedroom door open.   Smart as he is, we have not been able to get him to close doors behind him.

My wife, feeling Uber-Blonde, insisted she rush us to the correct Renningers, as we would be passing that exit anyway.  Grumbling, I decided I'd go along for the ride, largely as I had no other way home.

It continued to be very ugly outside, as it tends to be.  We arrived at the correct Renningers shortly thereafter.  I knew it had to be the correct Renningers as it looked so familiar (and as there was almost no one there).

There are two outdoor pavilions under which there were a few people selling stuff.  The first one seemed to be the regulars.  As we walked through, it appeared that most were packing up.  There certainly weren't any shoppers.  The remaining merchants looked depressed.  It became difficult to tell if the ones not hanging from the rafters had already succumbed to depression or were waiting for the pills to take effect.

We heard a band, which was a good sign.   And when I say band, I mean a few people banging away at their instruments in no real semblance of togetherness.  Still, it beckoned us on to view the people selling musical equipment.  And when I say people, I mean a sad group of stragglers with all varieties of musical gear.

No, really, I saw lots of pure junk, an eight-track player with some tapes, a Soldano and a Dr. Z amp.  Cheap guitars (all right-handed) abounded.  I don't think there were many more than ten people selling.

Having exhausted the possibilities of the musician portion, we looked toward the band.   The band, as it were, turned out to be four young fellas who had a distinct inability to complete a single song.  They'd get going then stop.  They weren't painful when they started but they'd kinda grind to a halt and there would be radio silence for a minute or three, followed by an attempt at a new song.  I don't know if this was an actual band or a jam but it wasn't entirely successful at being either.

Don't get me wrong: I drove well over an hour to check out this event.  I had high hopes for it and still do.  I wish them all the luck in the world: our region needs more musical events.  Perhaps it was the fact that it opened at eleven and we arrived at two.  Maybe it was the weather.  Maybe it was too close to a college.

Failing the musical portion, I pointed my wife toward the inside area.  She asked for a rest room and I pointed her toward the large, white portapotty right in front of us.  I haven't seen a blonde day like this in years.  I had to point out a turn because someone was looking at the road repair guys.

If you have never been to Renningers, you really should go.  It's kind of like a long, multi-lane, very humid indoor flea market, where the vendors go home but their stores don't.  It's also beyond a time warp because although you see things that you remember growing up, so will your parents.  Ancient coats, clothes, `antiques', military gear (including nazi paraphernalia) and even an electronics repair shop.  I
stopped at the electronics place to chat with the owner about All Things Tubes.

There are all sorts of food stops in the market, some manned (and womaned) by the Amish.  I asked my wife if it was appropriate to give the ladies my card and tell them to call me at Rumspringa.  She was most amused but suggested it would probably be better left unsaid.

I really have to give this some thought.  The concept of leaving something unsaid is most foreign to me.  In fact, up until recently, I didn't know one could leave something unsaid.  This might explain my weekly standing meeting with Human Resources at work.

We did purchase quite a variety of vegetables and some chipotle powder, because everything is better with chipotle.

Overall it was pretty depressing and disappointing.  The humidity indoors was oppressive and most of the stores were closed (on a Saturday, their big day).  We decided to leave and were amused to note that we were the next to last car in the lot.  By the time we got there, we were the last car.  I figured that this must be the same kind of Sign as finding the reminder post card about the event.

Homeward bound we were, back to the gray turnpike.  Only things seemed to be a lot more interesting in this direction.  I was minding my own business, checking email on my tablet, when my wife kept repeatedly trying to get my attention.  I looked up and immediately wanted to look back down.  The skies were almost black, with stuff swirling in the wind, falling down on the turnpike and hitting cars.

There were things that looked like flocks of birds blowing all about the sky, with some eventually hitting our car.  They weren't birds and didn't appear alive at all but they were flying about in the horrible winds and impacting the windshield with a sickening thud.  For purposes of illustration, let's call it Flying Mulch.  We'll call it that because Flying Mini Cooper with a side of Flatbed Truck is not as easy to remember.

We are not used to driving in hurricane-type winds.  Even stranger was the fact that a whole lot of trees were bent over at almost ninety-degree angles.  There were branches flying too, plus tree limbs and leaves all over the four lanes of the road.  It got so bad that some of the drivers stopped doing eighty miles per hour and actually put their flashers on.  This is almost unprecedented in Pennsylvania.

A brief check of the weather on my smart phone let us know that it would be dark, with a chance of showers and five mile per hour winds.  Weather forecasts are the biggest joke on the planet, with the possible exception of Congress.

We drove through a few different versions of hurricane and General Yuck.  The Hyundai behaved flawlessly, which is more than I can say about some of the other drivers.  They were exercising their God-given right to do eighty in a hurricane and there was simply no one that was going to deprive them of this liberty.

Another check of the weather indicated that there were tornadoes in DC and Lancaster.  I had the sinking feeling we might have driven through a Weather Event of some sort but I preferred to remain ignorant at the moment.  You can't drive through a hurricane or tornado if you don't know it's a hurricane or tornado (right?).

It had almost cleared by the time we got home, which was just in time for the storm to have followed us.  Fortunately it was a very pale ghost of itself by the time it hit us.

As I suspected, both the dog and the bed were happy to see me.  As much as it seems better to stay in bed most of the time, I need to get out and have these stupid experiences so I can type them out for you, my readers.

Thank you for coming by.  If you like ThermionicEmissions, please tell your friends.

The Philadelphia Curse - It's Personal

As we know, I have company in from out of town this week.   As we also know, Philthydelphia's weather is highly variable, to be polite.  In fact, Philly and the surrounding suburbs are going to shut things down for a day and have a huge celebrity concert for the purpose of getting the funds to purchase a real climate.

The weather and I go way back.  I have ancient memories of going on vacation when I was tiny and having it rained out.  Ever since then, I've felt it has been personal.  Douglas Adams [The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy] has a great bit about a person who gets rained on wherever he goes.  He doesn't realize he is actually a Rain God.  Read the Dirk Gently novels.  Everyone should read Douglas Adams regardless.

Validation is a particularly sweet thing for me, especially with the high number of odd things that tend to happen around me.  So it was welcome when the folks at work started noticing that it wasn't, in fact, totally in my head.  Over a period of years people noticed that we could count on rain when I took off work to visit the zoo.  We could have a heat wave the likes of which would make Arizona jealous and if I took off Wednesday, it would rain.  Rain wouldn't appear in the forecast in any way, but it would rain.  One year for my birthday, my coworkers got me zoo tickets and rain ponchos [Note: not Sears ponchos].

I would like to ask Douglas Adams if I might be a Rain God too, but he had the temerity to die a number of years back, making contact all but impossible.  Lacking any other subject matter experts, I am left to wonder alone.

So I have company in from out of town this week.  After brief consultation, it was decided that I would take off work Friday so we could go to the zoo.

You see where this is going, right?

On the work calendar, I noted that I would be out Friday and to BANK ON RAIN.

I have to tell you that the Universe is not stupid.  When I took off work and promised not to go to the zoo, it did not rain. When I took off and said I wasn't going to the zoo but intended to go anyway, it rained.

My poor friends from out of town manage to get the absolute worst of weather every time they arrive.  Usually it's the ridiculously high temperatures of summer combined with the ridiculously high humidity of summer.  In actual fact, spring and fall have been declared null in Pennsylvania, due to budget cuts.  This time my guests have been treated to our second record heatwave of the summer.  Yesterday it hit one hundred.  If you sit outside without moving, you will dissolve into whatever you're sitting upon.

But this time, the Universe had another trick up its sleeve.  Normally the forecast would be for high temperatures and sunshine, yet it would rain.  This time the Universe one-upped me....  as soon as I took Friday off, the forecast changed to rain and thunderstorms all day.   Yes, Victoria, it is personal.

Did you ever feel Universally f-d?

If I were really smart, I'd charge people to make it rain.  For several hundred dollars per acre, I would take off work for the day to go to the zoo, hence rain.  Unfortunately I can't concentrate my powers anywhere but where I live.  Perhaps I could get paid to relocate for the day and make it rain there.

Then I truly would be a Rain God.
