Captivity - Day 26 Social Distancing from my family

Probably because the manufacturing is done cheaply, I tend to scratch the letters off keyboards. Last week it was M and N. Even though I don't look at the keyboard, I'm now mixing up N and M. It's like I've got eyes in my fingers. Or maybe I've been inside too long.....

Since the last vacuum fought and won, tonight is the really cheap vacuum. I'm saying this because maybe if I say it, I'll actually do it. Odds are strictly against it.

I got an email from my car: it misses me.
So does the vacuum.

The doctor called, checking on the new medicine. I told him to hold on, while I caught the purple giraffe in the kitchen. He said something about dosage adjustment and got off the phone quickly....

I have a harem at work. Working from home is making things very difficult.(especially the spankings)...

When your doctor does telemedicine and can't quite get the video working, should you find a different doctor? Good thing it's not the psychiatrist.

I would stand 3' from a random stranger, not wear a mask, go out for no particular purpose, drive 95 mph, not shelter-in-place, and sit inside a restaurant, all so I could go to a guitar show. I miss them, like Madonna misses facelifts.

Another side effect of the constant rain is that the grass grows like mad. As we know, I'd rather cut my own limbs off than mow. That said, the neighbors have taken up mowing. Working from home has lost its luster. The next door neighbors are now dueling with the electric tool neighbors for stereo cacophany supremacy. The next door neighbor doesn't have a lot of grass, so I think she's mowing the same patch over and over again, to annoy me. 8 hours later, still going. Perhaps they're replanting the grass, one blade at a time.

UPDATE: I vacuumed AND mowed. The ($&#ing mower took me for a header on the steps. Neighbors are already nervous - I can't shoot the thing.

Mrs lefty goes food shopping more now than before Idiot Governor ordered everyone confined to quarters. Shoe stores have not been declared essential (Idiot Governor has very few women on his staff). Perhaps I need to do a bag check. Some Targets will let you buy food but not clothes. "That?" That's been there for weeks. It's for my mom."

"That guitar? It's been there for weeks. It's for your mom."

This is where I put the good wishes, concern, and touchy-feely stuff.
Since I'm not doing that today, you can get f'd.

Polar bears are left-handed. So am I.
Since I went to public school, I know this makes them my ancestors.

Once again, the good people in DC have stepped in to magically fix everything, this time with the Secure Elections Act. We remember that all legislation means the opposite of its title (Patriot Act), so we have that. The measure issues appropriations of grants to states to take action on election hardware and software issues.  In English, it takes more of your money and gives it to states to 'secure' the elections. The last time elections were secured, we got expensive electronic voting machines with no paper trail, from a manufacturer (Diebold) who donated to the democratic candidate. Speaking of which, how about all those generations of scanning devices at airports.....?

Nothing good comes out of DC and whatever it is will cost you dearly.

Speaking of which, how about that Border Security?

The US government has been left red-faced after it emerged that its Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has failed for over a decade to verify passports are authentic because it has not been able to properly read their built-in smart chip.

This was another project guaranteed to 'keep us safe'. We paid for it. A lot.
What have we gotten for our tax dollars? Another failed system. Another worthless department in our ever-expanding government. Why do I refer to it as Security Theater?

If your work performance turned out to be worthless, what would happen?
You'd be put on Modified Duty, by which I mean your daily routine would be modified by sitting on your couch, looking for a new job. I'm going to take a guess that the remedy for this situation will come in the form of new technology for the department, at the cost of hundreds of millions of your dollars. And these dollars will not be the originally appropriated dollars - they will be additionally appropriated dollars.

Will heads roll?
No, but eyes will.

Dirty Harry said it best: "Let me ask you a question, punk. Do you feel any safer? DO YOU?"

Border Patrol was not entirely unaware of this small glitch, as the Government Accounting Office reported on it in 2010.

  • PRO TIP: if you're really really drunk and if you really really have to wee outside, do not do it on a police station.

Isn't it great and nice and convenient that your new car is connected to the internet? Potentially, yes.

Realistically? Are you kidding me?
Your data is for sale to the highest bidder.
The cherry on the top is that you get to pay for the privilege!

OEMs are adding firewalls to your car!
Even if they were effective, your data will leave the car and be sold, where the profit margin is 80-90%.  What will you get from this? Nothing, at this point.

There are articles on the web on how to pull the cables that connect this. If  I were to buy a car today, I'd be certain to demand the car not be a connected car. Start by not agreeing to pay a carrier to connect it (although you'll still have to disconnect existing gear, especially if there's an OnStar-like feature).

Read the article. Now is the time to educate yourself and make your choice known.

  • According to a paper, we're all exhausted.  We're exhausted over things like "Wildfires, terror attacks, rising tensions with North Korea, racist rallies, political investigations in Washington, the non-stop barrage of presidential tweets, more and worse mass shootings from Las Vegas to Florida, a tsunami of sexual harassment accusations, the role of Russians in our elections, climate change, red state-blue state division and not one, not two, but three of the worst hurricanes on record — including one that nearly blew Puerto Rico out of the Caribbean Sea. "

Everybody's favorite airline, United, has been out of the news for a few weeks, so here's the first entry for February: A passenger used the emergency exit and slide to leave a plane he just boarded at Newark Airport. For some unknown reason, the police arrested him.

No one has been able to find a reason for the event, and the plane was delayed for five hours because of it.  It's kind of a shame the doors are locked once the plane is in the air. To be fair, United has absolutely nothing to do with this very silly behavior, unless one of the flight attendants mind-controlled him and told him the plane was on fire.

  • A rare snowfall blanketed Rome the other day, causing many at the Vatican to conclude that hell has finally frozen over.

I never regret not having a Faceyspaces account. Not even being unable to see the Murder/Suicide Channel, where you livestream your own suicide or yourself committing murder. A new entry was a man streaming his own murder.

Well, he didn't actually start out to catch his own death, but while he walked along, someone shot him. He remains quite dead, and Wingate University (North Carolina) went into lockdown for an hour, as did the state of Florida. Five buses full of NRA protesters were immediately diverted to North Carolina, and ten buses of Second Amendment supporters were hot on their heels.

Madonna has slammed modern hitmaking.
No, seriously.
The first musical no-talent queen of marketing is upset with the genre she pioneered?

In completely unrelated news, Barack Obama is very upset about all the black people running for office.

  • My bestest buds over at Apple have revealed a giant, high-end iPhone. Because $1200 wasn't charging the customers enough. There will also be a bargain model released (expected price, $1199.99).
  • Although the new iDevice won't be out til late this year, people are already lining up at random phone stores, in Apple Position: on their knees with wallets outstretched, drooling out of at least on side of their mouth, and thinking of new ways to praise this wonderful phone that they have not tried to their friends.  In anticipation, their friends have all moved to South America.

"Call Me By Your Name" is hailed as a heartbreaking gay romance, but Hollywood's SJW Squad is pissed that two straight actors were cast in the lead. Perhaps the Squad can be appeased if the actors claim they're closeted.  I left my acting certificate in my other pants, but I guess you'd have to be a hell of an actor to play gay.

The only acting I ever do is trying to play Adult. It's difficult and takes a lot out of me.

  • Next time you decide to fly, if you can get past the TSA, think about this flight. I watched a play by play and noticed people saying 'aboot' and 'pop' (soda) so I knew it was a Canadian airline. A passenger asked for a pop and was less than amused to be charged $3 for it. He got loud. The flight attendant, previously known as stewardess, previously known as Hey Babe,  tried to calm the fellow down, but he shifted topic to paying taxes on duty-free stuff. When Hey Babe said she was just handing out headsets, he let slip that he should bomb Canada.
  • Perhaps he was a time traveler from August 2001. Perhaps he had consumed most of what he bought at the duty-free. Perhaps he should have been denied a seat due to "Too stupid to fly."
  • If I were on that flight, I'd hope the crew could distinguish hysterical laughter from evil laughter, lest I take an unplanned ride after the flight.
  • For some reason, the plane's captain was less amused than me and pulled an aerial u-turn, back to Toronto. Upon landing, the plane was stormed by Canadian Special Forces (armed with curling brushes) and the Pop Protester was removed. He had no idea the welcoming committee was exclusively for him. He was later discovered to have issues.
  • The replacement plane had to divert also, due to a medical emergency.
  • Here's the special attention part: since September 11, 2001, any time there's an emergency like this, planes flying through the US get F-15 escorts. I'm wondering what an F-15 can do about a loudmouth, or even a loudmouth with things that go boom. Then they explained things.... the plane that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, sent debris all over the place and caused many casualties on the ground. So they don't want planes going down over populated areas. I'm still asking myself how F-15s can stop a plane from exploding. The fellow explains that they're escorting the plane and if anything looks bad... they can make a decision then.
  • Uh-oh.

Danny Gatton - the world's best unknown guitarist.
Here's a local story on him and his struggle for The Big Time.
He toiled for years, with recognition from local fans to big guitarists. He made the cover of Guitar Player and Vintage Guitar. He played with cars, ala Jeff Beck.

Danny could play jazz, country, rockabilly, blues and whatever else he wanted. Guitar players would watch him, slack jawed. I stood a couple of feet from him at a now-defunct club in Philly. He did a bit where he played slide with a beer bottle. One day there was a kid there with crutches and Danny played slide with a crutch.

Eventually Danny broke out and produced a few really good CDs.
Here's the Sun Medley (Mystery Train, My Baby Left me, That's Alright)

He appeared on Austin City Limits, finally expanding his audience. He really started to hit big. He was a star with audiences and throngs of guitar players, who simply could not believe what he could do.

Shortly thereafter, Danny chose to take his own life, using the shotgun method (not a terribly popular rock star goodbye).

If shit ain't feelin' right, please speak up. You'd be depriving the world of so much more.

I still see his original 1953 Telecaster at guitar shows.

Shhhhhh... Amazon is Listening

So how about that Amazon Echo? The little log-like device that sits on your table. You talk to it and it can order stuff, turn on lights, change the temperature and put one of your kids up for adoption (that's entirely fabricated). This is an absolute privacy nightmare, which means it's becoming a very popular item. Remember: anything that 'listens', like Echo, Siri, and Google Voice, sends everything you say to central servers. This apparently does nothing to deter people from using or purchasing these devices - my prediction is that it will get an awful lot worse (because people are stupid).

As one should expect, the police are already interested in data from one of these devices, which was in the the house where a crime was committed. According to security expert Bruce Schneier, Echo only listens for its name, so it's not likely anything was even recorded, but Amazon, to its credit, refuses to turn the information over. It's not paranoia if it's really happening. And this technology is going to be in other products soon, like your fridge. Hey, Fridge... order us some hookers.

This technology is right out of a pair of futuristic science fiction novels.... one where you walk into your house and control everything by talking to your Little Black Box. And another where the authorities can hear everything you do and the television watches you, like 1984 but worse. How about a happy medium? Or better yet, a safe one?

  • Yahoo hasn't had a major email breach announced in a week or two, so they're overdue. Right on schedule, this August 2013 breach, affecting 500 million accounts, is one of the biggest on record. These guys step right up to the plate, every time, and beat themselves (and their users) over the head with their own bat (forgive the sports metaphor). When did Yahoo turn up this breach? They didn't; it came from law enforcement last November.
  • In unrelated news, related to my previous recommendation: Shut. Down. Your. Yahoo. Email. Period.

  • Word has reached this blog that Madonna has always felt systematically repressed by the omnipresent Patriarchy. I'd like to add that we have always felt systematically oppressed by her 'music'.

Long before I had started my IT Career, such as it is, I was into electronics. Right next to the shop was an elderly lady who the owner befriended. She was hearing beeps and they sent me over to check it out. I had a feeling I knew what it was and I was right - it was the smoke detector, beeping its little heart out at one minute intervals to let the owner knew the battery was running down. I was a hero for the day and she got a new battery.

I mention this stupid story as an intro to Current Day, when I started to hear beeping from across the room.  As there are no smoke detectors in that vicinity, it was a bit confusing. In fact, more than confusing. Actually, it drove two of us up a ($&#ing tree, to be polite. The tree was full of little sticky bits, like thorns on a rose, and we were full of blood. We were also screaming so much, the dog got frightened and ran. It chirped at roughly one minute intervals. I walked to the general area of the noise to locate it. At the general area, the chirping seemed to come from a different general area. I looked like a blind person trying to locate a noise, only blind people can locate noise - I couldn't. Next up came The Wife, who, similarly, could not locate the sound. Wife seemed to hear it coming from the other direction. This caused additional frustration because of the unspoken thought that either the other was deaf or stupid or disagreeing on general principles.

Wife went into Hunt Mode. When this failed, Wife went into Throwing Mode. As it turned out, Throwing Mode was quite successful, in that it stopped the chirping. We still had no idea what caused it, but the blessed relief of no bleeping more than made up for it.

This morning it started up again. No amount of hunting, screaming, or throwing would make the noise cease or reveal its location. Our only salvation was that the noise was weaker, so in theory, the battery was draining and the noise would cease some time after our brains exploded or we had killed each other and only the dog survived. We have taken a ten square foot section of the room down to bare floor with what is referred to in corporate circles as Negative Progress. I think it's one of a small quantity (100 or so) of handheld games my wife doesn't remember she owns.

I was reminded of my otherworldly skill in making things Happen when I turned this way and that, trying to localize the infernal noise. First a series of large trash trucks went down the street. Next a huge plane flew overhead. I am not making this up.

Stay tuned for important updates.

  • Love him or hate him, Trumpie is always interesting. Days before officially taking office, CNN and Buzzfeed ran a story, now referred to as Pissgate. The story, as it turns out, was a joke, made up last year by the folks over at 4Chan. In other words, Fake News.  Donald had a press conference and CNN stood up with a question. The president-elect pointed at Mr. CNN and said FAKE NEWS.  The internet was abuzz, some taking him to task over Pissgate (even after it was proven false); some lauding him for telling it like it is; some screaming Freedom of the Press!
  • Let's consider that everything we hear from Mainstream Media is determined by six corporate entities - radio, print, and television. Let us also consider that the press overwhelming supported Hillary Clinton for president (proven). Let's consider that Trump is largely bypassing MSM for electronic communications (Twitter, etc). I think the man has a point.
  • I didn't vote for him but his achievements thus far have been interesting. This does not mean things can't go downhill, but I'm hoping things turn out well for the country. We need to come together, lest the plan of Divide and Conquer be effective - and it has been incredibly effective to date.
  • BRIEF ADDITION: Rudy '911' Giuliani has been named Cyber-Czar. I had no idea Rudy had any security experience at all, but he has an information security consulting firm. The website is run by software that's years out of date and quite hackable. Let's be fair: Rudy didn't put the site up himself, but...

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is here. This is a Really Big Deal, as manufacturers flout their wares, showing off their New Stuff. Industry people, news, and Just Plain People get to see what's coming.  This brief overview, by Twitter use Internetofshit, has some spectacular examples. My favorites are the solar charging hat and the bone conduction speaker/personal neurofeedback device. This should explain all those people who hear voices.

  • Apparently there is a gender gap in information security. I will pause for a moment, while you figure out which gender is underrepresented... People are working to bridge this gap, including a non-profit called CREST. Because we really don't care about security - we just need more internal plumbing.
  • When we are done fixing this problem, perhaps we can convene a worldwide special interest group, that will work to tackle this issue as it pertains to guitar players. The working motto is "We need more vaginas, not more boobs."

Poop Everywhere!

Got a pet and a Roomba (automatic vacuum cleaner)?
Apparently you can be in deep doo-doo if the machine runs over pet poop (or any other poop, one would imagine). In one case, it spread the poop all over the house. This is the main reason I love blogging.

  • CNN has admitted to shorthanding ('creatively editing') the clip of the dead Milwaukee man's sister. The edited version said, "Call for peace." The original version said, "Go burn down the suburbs, not our local businesses." CNN apologizes.

I don't have a ton of good (or bad) things to say about Taylor Swift, but she just donated $1 million to help Louisiana recover from the flood. Hats off for your humanity, Taylor.

  • The BBC News reported a study on the rising number of Islamophobic posts on Twitter.  Islamophobic is defined as anything negative about Islam. Not slanted at all, is it? Hmmm.. did they study the elections? I'm sick of them - if I tweet this, am I fraudophobic? If I tweet something bad that a gay guy did, am I homophobic? (ok, bad example). I really can't stand the Olympics (Zikaphobic), Social Justice Warriors (WhiteGuiltphobic), or Kim/Kanye (ok, that's just normal). Then there's concert prices (ServiceChargephobic), bad drivers (idiotphobic), and loud coworkers (deafophobic). Might as well give up on Mainstream Media (Agendaphobic), as if that's news.

Special Music Issue!

Today's news is one of special note to musicians and music fans alike.  It deals with some extremely important events in the world of music that happened over the weekend.

Which would you rather see:

Madonna's nipple

or

Lady Gaga receiving a concussion

BZZZT!!!

Oh, sorry, it was a trick question.
The correct answer, of course, is that neither matters to music.

Besides - how could they tell Gaga had a concussion?
