Captivity - Day 45 Leave the blasting caps home, jimmy
Dammit, it's weird here.
Moreso.
Since it's a day ending in -Y, the Advanced Coordinated Stereo Lawnmowing Team is out. They have recharged and tuned their instruments, making sure to remove all mufflers. They sounded like one of those SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY commercials, only louder. Their new routine is Synchronized Mowing, whereby they do everything together, from starting, to cutting, to cleaning and hacking up some of the neighbors, and throwing them in the truck. They have a sensor on my phone and in my office, so that when I'm on a call, their mowers go into overdrive. It's fully automatic.
If the mowers somehow run out of gas simultaneously, there's no reason to worry - I live with a percussionist. She had to turn Santana down this year because she wanted to be locally magnificent. She'll somehow break into a percussion solo mid-day or so. This is generally after the mowers stop. The mowers are merely an opening act for the percussion. Percussion also waits until a work call comes in. How do they know? She loves to spontaneously bash some shit, pretending it's my head, then if she can get it loud enough to kill birds.
Hey - yuh know what's going on outside?
Neither do I.
Aside from some memories of a woman arrested on a licking spree. What the hell... didn't we have knife and gun crime? Now we have licking. Next year it'll be a looking spree. Just so you don't feel alone, there have also been blowing nose and a KKK hat sprees. America is a beautiful place, when it's not watching Furries on tv.
Later tonight, Mrs lefty is going to have one of those Telehealth doctor appointments. The substance of the call is a doctor calling you, instead of seeing you in-person. But noooo.... we can't call it that... no sir... we have to give it a special name -Telehealth. The joke, however, is on them, as they get less money for a telehealth visit than a Regular Vitsit, She has the choice of video or audio. This means a video conferencing service or what they refer to as an incredibly complex device with a name that's difficult to pronounce but sounds something like fone. It's like a video conference without the video. The real fun is if you choose phone: while the doctor is talking, you can make faces and blow your nose in his general direction. If you mute the phone, you can even stand there and imitate him. So if you're really bored, and who among us isn't, select the audio only option. NOTE: make sure to use the MUTE function before you start your impressions. Trust me.
Before we sign off, we want to remind you of a word that says it all... a word that will be with us for years.. a word you can use to show your friends how much smarter you are. Yes, it's teledildonics. It is an actual word, for technology to manipulate 'devices' remotely. Use it with pride.

Definitely Maybe
Bohemian Rhapsody celebrates its 40th birthday on October 31. Queen guitarist Brian May still rocks out to it in his car. How was it made? I'm glad you asked. From Freddie's concept to the stages of recording to video to radioplay to live performance, it's a great story.
A West Virginia [uh-oh] assistant prosecuting attorney has been suspended for pulling a pistol on fake spiders decorating his office. In my professional capacity as an amateur blogger, I suggest that this man's meds be re-evaluated.
PRIVACY: A popular iDevice encryption app has just been released for android. I figure if Edward Snowden uses it, it should be good enough for me. It's called Signal and is available from the Play Store. I'll assume none of us has information that's so critical it needs to be encrypted. But this isn't about criticality; this is about the right to privacy.. the right to NOT have your communications intercepted and put in a file somewhere for future use. I'm using it now.
- Somebody call Goodyear! A $2.7 billion Department of Defense unmanned blimp got loose and floated over Pennsylvania for a few hours (and when I say 'got loose', I mean it got confirmed shot down). The purpose of the balloon is to detect a missile attack, although Spy Machine is certainly another mission. To keep things interesting, the steel mooring cable dragged along for the ride, shorting out power wherever it went along the way. A recent investigation by the Baltimore Sun found the program "hobbled by defective software, vulnerability to bad weather and poor reliability." Apparently this is not a new phenomenon - they have gotten loose in Afghanistan on a number of occasions. IT'S COMING FOR US. AND OUR WALLETS!

- lefty has a credit card with a $5,000 limit. lefty has run smack into the limit. lefty calls the credit card company and negotiates, over seven days, a new limit of $7,500. lefty fully plans to spend up to the new limit and start the entire routine again in six months, claiming he'll pay his balance down (with a wink). Congratulations! lefty has just explained the national debt and what Congress just did in passing its 'budget'.
There is now a Zombie Disease. Called Cotard's Syndrome, it makes a person think they're dead. Why the hell can't we have a disease that makes people stop taking selfies? Where Cotard's makes people think they have no brain, the new syndrome installs a proper-size brain. Come to think of it, I used to walk up to automatic doors and they wouldn't open. I wonder if I'm a zombie....
- An Italian doctor has been suspended from practicing in the UK after failing an English language test. In America, we promote them.
Apparently the Chinese targeted Anthem Healthcare to learn about US healthcare. What's there to learn? Pay a lot of money to a huge corporation with solid political ties. The corporation then tries (and succeeds) not to pay a single cent in compensation. What's so complicated?
- Hundreds of immigrant families caught illegally crossing the Mexican border told U.S. immigration agents they made the dangerous journey in part because they believed they would be permitted to stay in the United States and collect public benefits, according to internal intelligence files from the Homeland Security Department.
The school president of the University of Louisville, KY, has apologized for staff wearing Hispanic halloween costumes. Apparently putting on a sombrero is racist and the entire staff now has to take diversity training. Colleges now designating Halloween costume sensitivity consultants. Scottish Diversity Committee has decreed a no-kilt policy. Jewish Anti-defamation League forbids rabbi costumes. Paranormal Response Group says NO GHOSTS. ACLU is suing, claiming bias against witches and pagans in general. Muslims offended over birkas. Christians say ignore halloween. In fact, the only group that isn't complaining is the American Dental Association.
In other news, Walmart has its own SWAT team to prevent 'embarrassing' Halloween costumes from hitting the shelves.
- Robot buses are coming to America! The only question is how they will get the buses to drive as poorly as human bus drivers. Can you program a bus to go through a red light? The buses are made in France, so at least they'll be full of disdain for American bus-riders.
It's better to burn out than it is to rust? My wife came to me, in an upset state, to inform me that our stove was rusting. Of course our stove was rusting - it's been so quiet lately. Technically she's correct; that little panel under the display has rust spots. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? Well, you can take it off, scrape and sand the entire thing down and repaint it, perhaps in your spare time. As for me, it's on my list, but waaaaaay down at the bottom, under dusting.
- You know that feeling of relief you get when you drive through an intersection and the light changes, but you made it ok? Relief always turns to outrage when you check your rearview mirror and find that another car went right through the light and is just about inside your trunk. Bastards!
China wishes to remind its citizens that the new Two Child Policy goes into effect in March, therefore the One Child Policy is in effect until then. American math, hopefully similar to Chinese math, indicates that prospective parents can start fucking now: whatever arrives will do so after March.
- Japan and Korea have agreed to accelerate talks to resolve a row about Korean women forced to work in Japanese brothels during World War Two. Reportedly, Japan has offered to return them to Korea no later than this weekend.
Hacking group Anonymous is planning to reveal the identities of 1,000 KKK members, as obtained from the Twitter account of a clan member. Wait - the KKK has computers?
- Sometimes a man can get in trouble, through no fault of his own. Like when your girlfriend answers with a simple hello, and you're in the shower and it's your wife on the phone - Joe Walsh, Certain Situations.
Hero of the Great Unwashed, Mark Dice, has another video, this time asking Hillary supporters if they support Sharia (Muslim) law in the US. And you know they do....

Definitely Maybe?
My hero, Jeff Beck, released Definitely Maybe way back in 1972, on the Jeff Beck Group album. This is a wonderful instrumental. The thing that really does it for me, theme aside, is the multiple guitar tracks during the 'verse'. The way they're stacked and play off each other is really interesting and musically satisfying; for lack of better term, well-orchestrated (specifically at the end). It is also the only known (to me) use of a slide with a wah pedal. The more than able keyboardsmanship comes courtesy of Max Middleton, who did most of the keyboards up to about Blow by Blow. Great stuff - it's a shame he's not with Jeff Today. As this is from an album, you'll hear a bit of click. Enjoy!

As It Turns Out, Babies Don't Bounce
Today's winning headline:
Thousands March Through Snow Protesting Global Warming.
Not even a close second:
Woman Pregnant With Quadruplets at 65!
Part of me is about to be ill. The other part of me hopes I'm still going strong at 65.
I can tell there are no credible threats to the president. I know this because the Secret Service had to scramble to catch a 4-year-old who snuck under the White House fence. I've met Secret Service people... apparently they're hiring different Secret Service people these days.
MUSIC(?) NEWS
Tahiti has succeded in setting the record for largest ukelele ensemble. There is good news and good news: not only have they set the record, we didn't have to listen to it. In almost related news, China will introduce square-dancing rules, following complaints over disorderly "dancing grannies". Say what you will about China, but they have some good ideas. In still more news, Indian music lovers can now listen to Eric Claption's Layla in Sanskrit. How many times have you said to yourself, "Self, what I'd really like is to hear Layla in Sanskrit. Or Swahili."
Incredibly fortunate news here: The NSA has decided to kill the phone surveillance program. In a completely unrelated story, the KKK has decided to kill the hate thing for the Jews and all brown-skinned people.
Today's Second Best Headline:
Glowing Tampons Help Detect Sewage Leaks. I included the link in case you think I made that up.
You know whenever there's Philadelphia news, it's going to be amusing and this is no exception. Philly's mayor, Michael Nutter, has been dragging his feet on releasing the report on Comcast's customer service. Nutter has been sucking on the Comcast teat for years. As it turns out, customer satisfaction level was the lowest, by as much as 11%, of other Comcast franchise areas studied over the last six years. Strangely enough, Comcast's home, Philly, has the highest rates in the chart. As if we needed another reason to hate them. Not that Verizon's much better. This is what happens when the local legislators allow a duopoly on cable service.
In national news, the Defense Department keeps losing sensitive explosives gear, then finding it for sale on Ebay. And we trust these folks to 'defend' the country? I wouldn't trust them to mow my lawn (and you know how I feel about mowing). Even more frightening is the chemical warfare center, Ft Detrick, keeps 'misplacing' all sorts of viruses. Unfortunately they're not showing up on Ebay.

WHO SAYS STRAIGHTS AND GAYS CAN'T GET ALONG?
TSA screeners in Denver set things up so a gay screener could grope the groins of male travelers he found attractive. Of course this backfired when they got caught. The TSA writes its own material.

Dodging the Potholes
I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't mention the Supreme Court's latest case: whether or not Easton Area School District children can wear I Heart Boobies bracelets. This is a subject close to my (and your) heart.
Yes, it's that time of the year in PA, where my trashcans require snow tires. Where there's a snow storm every Monday (plus Wednesdays and the occasional weekend). When Niagara Falls freezes. When Seasonal Affective Disorder is at its worst. When we long for the ninety degree, high humidity, soaking days of summer.
As a result of the near-constant snow, the entire area could be (and has been declared) a disaster area. I have learned a new way of driving: with my eyes down, looking for rogue potholes. Most of the area is one huge pothole. We have small ones but Philadelphia has potholes that can swallow your car (and your house).
It's also time for all sorts of international festivities, like Ash Wednesday. This was the day, when my wife was little, when she skipped church and smeared cigarette ashes on her forehead. Her parents probably knew (although I can't figure out how one can tell the difference).
Then there's Fat Tuesday, named for what happens when you consume all of those donuts. Not to mention Brazil's Carnaval, where everybody dresses in bikinis (including the men). But be kind to Brazil, for that is where we get many of our Victoria's Secret models.
You're probably asking, "Hey lefty - how's your car?"
Interesting you should ask. Apparently the car had an argument with a bus. The bus won, but only because it scratched and dented the entire passenger side of my car. More interesting (in that lovely dark way of mine) is that the mirror is gone. This will be (approximately) our fourth passenger side mirror. The universe has a particular fondness for that mirror. It breaks away cleanly, which makes installation easier, but even a used mirror is about a hundred and fifty bucks. The last one was black, which allowed me to tell which car was mine in a parking lot, as the car and the other mirror are white.
As is their custom, my insurance company had an adjuster out post-haste and our check is forthcoming. It's kind of exciting because when it's done, my car will look almost like new. The challenge here is to crap up the rental car in the short amount of time we'll have it. The other challenge will be to find a body shop that will paint a bullseye on the car (right over the invisible one).
Interesting story about the rental car... the last time our car was hit, the rental cost us about seven hundred and fifty dollars. Why? Because yours truly refused to sign up for rental in his car insurance. Yours truly's wife discovered the increase in premium would be a dollar per month and signed up for it immediately. She's a wise woman (except for her choice in men).
The pets are fine, thank you. Marshall has taken up sitting behind his mommy on the couch. Like all cockers, Marshall has abandonment issues (unless there's cat food about).
Ren has apparently spent too much time around Marshall and has started being clingy with me. This is new for the ten-year-old feline (monster). Normal clingy would be ok but this cat is becoming extremely clingy. He sits next to me, taking up my entire leg. Then he puts his head on my leg. Then he puts his head on my laptop while I'm typing. If I move, he adjusts himself closer to me. Even typing has become difficult. When I physically pick him up and move him, he turns around and comes right back. If I'm really engaged in typing, he sits there, purring loudly and staring at me until I pet him. Did I mention he purrs LOUDLY? He's impossible to ignore (and I do spend time petting him).
The whole event spurred much discussion at work. We had to do a little research to find out exactly who the KKK hates. It turns out to be blacks, hispanics, Catholics, and of course, Jews.
With those happy thoughts, I bid you farewell, until next time.

Speaking of boobies, have you heard about the woman who beat her mother with a vibrator? Considering the amount of damage, that had to be some vibrator.
Speaking of cars, how about that lady who drove her kids into the water in Daytona Beach? Beachgoers were running after the minivan, pulling the screaming children to safety. The poor kids were screaming that Mom was trying to kill them. Mom got a free trip to the Happy Place<tm>, where she was evaluated. Mind you, the police stopped her earlier for unrelated reasons.
She was accused of three counts of attempted murder.

Apparently some guy pissed off his neighbors by flying a KKK flag with a sign that said 'Members Wanted'. Personally I can't imagine why his neighbors were upset. On a serious note, he does have First Amendment rights, no matter how disgusting his sign is.
His wife became a spokesperson for him. It seems she tolerates his love for his fellow man but doesn't feel the same way herself.
