Meet the New Year - Same as the Old Year

Your love is like  having to take down the Christmas tree

Benedict XVI, first pope to resign in 600 years, dies at 95.
He was buried with a few little boys to keep him company, just as it was in life.

Today I identify as  campaign manager for the green pen. Vote for pen! C'mon - he can't be any worse.

Any day now I will return to work, post-traumatic from vacation. It will be fun, going through 2 weeks of emails. No, not fun.. what's that other word? Perilous. It must've been really quiet without me, as I'm the only one who speaks, aside from the boss. I'm hoping this transferred to the email, so there aren't 400 of them waiting to be deleted.

Between vacations like this and paying mortgage, I should be working til I'm about 80. About a day after I eventually retire, Wife will lament that I should probably go back to work. I will agree, albeit silently. The dog won't know the difference.

Transgender woman's scheduled execution would be US first
I want to hear no more from the LGBTQ lobby. They are finally truly equal.

I have been agitated at rap/hips hop for a while. In fact I have been agitated before it started. But the other day, I made the mistake of letting Wife have control of the car's radio. Whenever garbage comes on (this is broadcast radio - it's all garbage), I am not allowed to change the station because "I really like this song" (Wife). Well, I have to admit, I never heard the full song before, but I was astounded at the lyrics. The intimacy, the finesse of the flow, the sheer beauty of the writing. I was stunned. This was a song that would last throughout the ages, next to Led Zeppelin and Shakespeare. I could never do it justice, but allow me to try:

Ooh baby baby

Ooh baby baby

Push it real good

Ooh baby baby.

I almost cried, but held it together because I was driving. The sheer beauty. The rhyme. The strong, witty lyricism. I cannot believe I have come this far as a musician without embracing this gift. I'm really embarrassed that I foolishly derided anything of this genre, without even giving it a fair listen. Especially because Tupac is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I missed the signs. All I can say is that I'll try to be more open in the future.

Ooh baby baby

Being one of the top guitarists of all time wasn't enough.
Getting an astronomy degree was also insufficient.
Now Queen's Brian May is SIR Dr. Brian May.
So the king bestowed the honor upon a Queen. If only Freddie were here to see it.

To start off the new year, it's 50 degrees and partly sunny. I may don my bikini. The thought should scare you, especially when I forget to wax. I can't keep up with the weather... I just know it's always gray and mostly raining. There's partly sunny, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, a bit of sun, clouds rapidly moving over the sun, more clouds, cloudy for the local sports team games, unbelievably icky, 257 individual shades of gray, and sunny for about 3 minutes. Oh yeah, there's also rainy, with a picture of a cartoon figure holding an umbrella.

Yesterday we went to Victoria's Secret. I know Victoria's Secret, by the way: how you can get so many to pay so much for so little. As I walked in, one of their young, uber-friendly salesladies (would you honestly prefer a salesMAN at Victoria's?) asked if she could help me find anything. I looked at her and with honesty, said, "Yes. My wife." Apparently no one had ever asked her this before. She was consequently of no help whatsoever. I don't fault her for her inability to help, because Wife lives in some sort of quantum anomaly. Let me explain: Wife says to go to the guitar store, then meet her a Victoria's. This is a perfectly reasonable request, so after finding absolutely no interesting left handed guitars, I was off to Victoria's. I don't mind, as anything in Victoria's benefits me too. So I scoured the store, front to back, from one side to another. There were certainly a lot of screams when I checked the changing rooms... what's wrong with these people? The only lady happily surprised for the intrusion turned out, upon further inspection, to have female lingerie, while not exactly being female. While I don't judge, I was looking for my wife, not *a* wife. I continued to the other side, which was very pink, and even checked the various nooks and crannies, without any sign of Wife. I went outside pink, went back inside, and there she was. She did not exist until the 2nd time I looked for her. That should put the quantum physicists into a spin for a few decades.

There was a salesMAN in the makeup store. We introduced him to the guy/girl in Victoria's, and are assured we'll be invited to the wedding. At least we'll be positive that he/she will have nice lingerie for the wedding night.

That brings us back to the present, where I'm looking for a nutritious breakfast to start my day. OMG - I didn't know we had Cinnabons! This year might turn out to be alright in spite of itself.

Communication Breakdown

The doctors tell us we're a well-matched, compatible pair. They also tell us we have the Mother of All Communication Problems. Friends, relatives, and random people on the street have all mentioned it to us. I honestly work on our issue, trying to never come off nasty in tone or message. I kept wondering what I was doing wrong. After a few years (25), I think I'm beginning to understand:  it's her fault.

What he said                                              What she heard

I'm off today, it's a good day to clean               You never clean

We should go out for dinner, how's 5:00?                  Did somebody break your arms?

I'm going to vacuum.          You fscking slob-maybe you could lift a finger to do something

Could you please bring the dog in - she's barking       You are lower than duck shit. Were you raised by wolves? Yes, I'm calling your parents wolves. Your sister didn't fall far from the tree either. Your brother hasn't seen a sober day since he was 6. Can't you do anything right? You should be walking the dog at least 2 miles every few hours, with or without your cane-the doctor told you to exercise, which you probably never do anyway because you never get out of bed, fatso. Sure, you lost 5 pounds, what about the other 80 you put on after we got married? And your driving scares the poop out of me, as well as anyone else unfortunate enough to be on the road at the time. As frightening as your driving is, your parking is directly from hell. We're not joking when we tell you not to park on the curb. And your body odor - could you shower once in a while? I know I should be grateful that we have sex once every 4 months, whether you like it or not. Who taught you to clean a house - Pig Pen? Just because you're crazy and have papers to prove it doesn't mean you can't get a job. Have you seen the sheer number of clothes around here? I guess since you lost 5 pounds, it's time to buy you a whole new wardrobe, right? God, I make the money and all you ever do is spend it. Your clothes are from the Librarian Collection-you look 80. You looked 80 when you were 20.  And don't tell me you don't like anal either. Everybody's wife is doing it. My brother's wife is the wind beneath his wings; you are the rain on my parade.

So I bring the dog in.

I just heard about a nasty accident - train vs pedestrian. I'm guessing the train won.

Train accidents are a fascination of mine. It's not the train, it's the bumbling idiots in cars and on foot that are worth examining. Many accidents seem to happen because people think it's ok to park their vehicles on the tracks. Some would argue that they deserve any damage they get, as well as the people who go through the intersection even with the lights blinking and a train horn loud enough to wake dead people a few states over. Science would benefit from figuring out which section of their alleged brains is faulty. Perhaps we can test for it and sterilize anybody with the Stupid Gene. Heaven knows we don't need them reproducing.

Of particular concern are the pedestrians who collide with the trains. Let's face it... it's so difficult to get hit by a train that you have to want to get hit in order for it to happen. For hundreds of years, people have somehow managed not to get hit by trains, even while walking on tracks. It's not like trains quietly sneak up on you and go BOO!. There are certainly enough external warnings. And if you are doing the science of seeing how long it takes a train to stop, you will not live long enough to see your first results.

Review: Why Does the CIA Need a Podcast?
-The director worries that the public doesn't trust his spy agency.

I can't imagine why....
MKULTRA, Frank Olson, MONARCH, LSD, nazis, operating inside the US, abuse, torture, mind control, programming, JFK, records 'lost', deep secrecy, not answering to (above) the citizens....
But everybody deserves a 2nd chance, right?

What goes around, unfortunately comes back

Anyone older than 10 has observed styles and trends. It's worse a few years later, when they return. I have a stack of Hawaiian shirts that has gone in and out of style 5 times. I have been ahead, in, and behind fashion at the same time.

Go into any home supply store and look at kitchens. They all seem to have this silvery or brushed aluminum finish, making them all future-y.  It wasn't always this way, you know.  For some unknown reason, the 'in' colors in the 1970s were harvest gold and avocado green. Ask your parents, grandparents, or anyone who lived through the tumultuous 70s. You could ask then-president Richard Nixon, but he's dead.

Fortunately, people came to their senses and started using considerably less ugly colors. My #1 guitar's finish is called antigua (I call it pukeburst). The outside corners are avocado green, fading to harvest gold. It is absolutely the most hideous guitar finish ever made (from 1977-1981, when Fender went off drugs). I love this finish, precisely because it's so ugly. Fender has started offering it again, which excites and confuses me to no end.

I mention this because we were in a mall with a lot of clothing stores. Some of the new clothes are harvest gold. While we didn't see any avocado green, it's only a matter of time. 50 years later, fashion has caught up with us, and boy is it UGLY.

harvest gold

avocado green- should be a bit more olive

Tesla driver blames full-self-driving software for eight-car Thanksgiving Day pile up

With Elon's Twitter news happening every 6 minutes, we need to remind you that there's always Tesla news to hold us over.  The car automatically and for no particular reason, slowed from 55mph to 20mph (37.6 grams Canadian), causing an 8 car pileup on the Bay Bridge on Thanksgiving (news travels fast from the planet of California). Note: the driver blames it on the software - police are investigating.

Speaking of which, I did manage a little fun on vacation. Whenever I went out, I pissed off other drivers by only doing 15mph over the speed limit. Boy were they red in the face. Several made hand signals, but I don't know sign language.

Also speaking of which, Tesla's Autopilot requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel while it autosteers. It hardly seems automatic, does it?  But that's ok, I prefer drivers keep their hands on the wheel at all times. You know they won't, though. They will count on the cars having a higher IQ than they do, which will largely be correct. Your smart tv will fight your smart car over which is smarter. Meanwhile, they both send your information to the manufacturer.

Conversations with my Dog

Me: Hello. Nice to see you.
[3 minutes later]
Me: Hello. Nice to see you again. What can I do for you?
Her: Well, you know... Mommy's in her office with the door closed, so I can't get to her.
Me: And?
Her: I need you to follow me and open the door so I can be with Mommy.
Me: And if I don't?
Her: I will keep coming into your office and leaping up on your lap, every few minutes.
Me: I'll go open her door.
Her: Thank you. You train quickly.

Traffic Jams on Mars

Your love is like  "War and Peace" in one evening

The good news: China's Mars Rover is now operational

The bad news: it is causing a horrible traffic jam because it goes way under the speed limit and frequently stops for no apparent reason. The US Rover has lodged a formal protest.

If you're a drug dealer in Liverpool, using the EncroChat program, stay away from Stilton cheese. Fingerprints in a picture of Stilton were used to identify the dealer. If he had gone to Monty Python's cheese shop, this wouldn't have been a problem.

You get a better understanding of hierarchies when you look at something like facial recognition. It has proven racist, yet is still in use everywhere. Racist: yes. Surveillance State: yes. Surveillance State wins (every time).

Anthony Fauci testified it would have been “almost a dereliction of our duty” if the National Institutes of Health had not worked with China to study coronaviruses as he defended NIH money going to fund “collaboration” with “very respectable Chinese scientists.”

Fauci and Francis Collins, the leader of the National Institutes of Health, are adamant in insisting that NIH did not fund "gain-of-function" research at the Wuhan lab. But Fauci and Collins also admit they don’t actually know what the secretive Chinese lab has been up to.

Ummmm......

Walmart sent a ton of racist registration emails the other day.

"Welcome to Walmart, Ni**er"

Walmart naturally has no idea how the emails went out.

Well, the outside street ripping-up/noise project has moved away (I think). There has not been a peep since yesterday, when I finished work. If that ain't personal, what is? Per signs, there are no cars parked on the street. There were two down the block, but the construction guys drove up with one of those huge Magnet Trucks, stuck it to the car, and moved it to the owner's roof. The second one got attached to a different truck, which repeatedly dropped it on the ground. They discovered it didn't make nearly enough noise, so they went back to the original Noise Truck, which literally shook houses.

Meanwhile, my car, and everything else, is so covered by pollen, it looks bright green. My trashcans look bright green. If she sits in the yard too long, the dog looks bright green. My #1 guitar is a sickly shade of green, but it's supposed to be that way. I call it Pukeburst. It could be the ugliest stock guitar finish on the planet, which is how it captured my heart.

The picture is horrible and there's no light. The finish is horrible regardless.

If you lived through the 70s, or know somebody who did, the 2 colors are avocado green and harvest gold. Your appliances were one of these colors in the 70s. The actual name of the finish is antigua, but who wouldn't prefer Pukeburst?

Most everything else is black, because it is The Law. Amps and guitars. Black. If they were near windows, they'd be pollen green too.

I don't like to complain about summer weather, because it could be winter weather, which I despise. Where are spring and autumn? Idiot Governor had them banished, along with the state economy. They barely exist anyway. Gloom is about 300 days per year, all seasons. Humidity is deathly in the summer.  In the winter, we either get snow or no snow at all. The only reason we stay here is our favorite pizza place won't open a branch in the Southwest anywhere. One doesn't want to be stuck in the land of low humidity without one's favorite pizza. Low humidity is lovely, but you're not going to find it in the east. I have actually seen paper wilt in the summer, when it was 92 degrees with 92% humidity. If you go south, you get humidity and hurricanes that make the news.  I dunno about you, but I don't want to keep track of the next weird hurricane name.

I was just advised that Jeffrey Epstein's cell guards admitted they were sleeping instead of guarding.

So that's 2 lies.

SUPERVISOR: So how did Jeffrey Epstein wind up dead on our watch?

GUARD1: we were guarding, but the cameras went out for 5 minutes. Just like Lady Diana's, in that tunnel.

GUARD2: nah, be fair, we were napping. Epstein hung himself then slit his throat.

GUARD1: No, it's wasn't like that, I swear. We were napping and someone lifted the keys.

GUARD2: Yeah, that's it. We sleep soundly, so they could have stolen an entire desk and we would've slept through it.

GUARD1: Yeah, they stole the keys and gave Epstein a heart attack, THEN he strangled himself.

SUPERVISOR: there wasn't anything in his cell to strangle himself with.

GUARD1: about that.....

GUARD2: we might have forgot and left a bunch of belts and tubing in a box, next to his bunk.

GUARD1: Oh yeah, the Suicide Box. I think it had blades too. Maybe some pills.

SUPERVISOR: you idiots! Why was the Suicide Box in Epstein's cell?

GUARD2: Uhhh... napping again, Sir.

SUPERVISOR: You guys sure nap a lot.

GUARD1: That's not true. We only nap at work.

SUPERVISOR: Is there anything else... any other tiny detail you might have forgotten?

GUARD1: Well... the unlocked medicine box

GUARD2: and the gun cabinet

GUARD1: the open cell doors

GUARD2: the visitors

SUPERVISOR: What visitors?

GUARD2: Any visitors.

GUARD1: Yeah, we don't discriminate. We're not that kind of prison.

SUPERVISOR: So anybody could walk in, grab some pills, pick up a gun, get some strangling tools, and walk into any cell they want.

GUARD1: Yeah, that's about it.

GUARD2: Phew... it's a good thing we didn't put Epstein at any risk.

GUARD1: Yeah, that woulda been really bad.

Idiots in Space!

Discovery TV is setting up a reality show for the International Space Station

It was inevitable. It turns out the US is not conquering space for military superiority - it's for more reality tv shows. Can you imagine the one on Mars? Here are some topics for the ISS:

  • these are my dirty diapers from liftoff
  • I think Betty got a better seat than me - NASA likes her best
  • we wanted to do it in a closet, but there are no closets
  • can't I get some privacy up in this jawn?
  • the pilot is racist because I saw some stuff he posted 20 years ago on a bulletin board
  • NOW I find out there are no facilities for trans women...
  • I want the camera exclusively on me, but it keeps flying away

Councilman "mind-boggled" by Baltimore City IT department ineptitude.

This is irony in its highest form: a councilman being mind-boggled, and referring to a department as inept.

Not that he doesn't have something of a point.... IT audit information was kept on individual computers, not on servers, and not backed up. That's certainly inept. I think the entire process should be audited, from acquisition to education, to actual use. I have a hunch there will be 'irregularities' found at each step.

Meanwhile, the taxpayers are on the hook for $18 million (so far). Because you KNOW no one else is going to pay... the taxpayers will soon be mind-boggled too.

He had a copy of the manual, but never read it.  Once again, the technology is not ready for prime time.

Seattle Public Schools have a K-12 Math Ethnic Studies Framework.
You read that right.
Allow me to give you highlights:

  • Power and oppression, as defined by ethnic studies, are the ways in which individuals and groups define mathematical knowledge so as to see “Western” mathematics as the only legitimate expression of mathematical identity and intelligence. This definition of legitimacy is then used to disenfranchise people and communities of color. This erases the historical contributions of people and communities of color.
  • Students will be confident in their ability to construct & decode mathematical knowledge, truth, and beauty so they can contribute to their experiences and the experiences of people in their community
  • Mathematical theory and application is rooted in the ancient histories of people and empires of color
  • Where does power and oppression show up in our math experiences?
  • How has math been used to resist and liberate people and communities of color from oppression?
  • Gravity is culturally oppressive, By accepting the white definition of gravity as 'a law,' it oppresses people of color and people who see gravity as more of a suggestion.   [I made this up]
  • This can't be real. If it is, I'm even more glad I don't have kids.

This is a 1979 left handed Fender antigua Stratocaster.
Underneath is my well-played 1977, which is my favorite.
I want this guitar very badly.
The guitar store wants $4,000 plus shipping (from Japan). The guitar is worth maybe half that. This is the major problem with being left handed.
    I am sad.

Philly Guitar Show - Summer 2015

I made my religious pilgrimage to the Philly Guitar Show (in Oaks, PA, naturally) over the weekend.

We got out of the car and went toward the entrance,  noticing a lot of strange-looking people. Very strange-looking people. Remembering that there's typically a reptile show along with the guitar show, we continued.  But these people weren't reptiles. They were wearing really bizarre hats, helmets and clothing.

    FURRIES!!!

False alarm - these youngsters appeared to be from the fantasy-prone video generation. There was a gaming show.  And there was no entrance for the guitar show, which was incredibly odd.  We had missed the sign that stated the show was moved to another hall. At said hall, we observed middle-aged dudes out front, smoking. Ah yes, the guitar show.

It was cheaper this year, probably because it was smaller (grumble).  The greyhound adoption people were there, as usual, with three really sweet dogs (throw-aways from dog racing tracks). They have lovely temperaments and are really not that active (two were spread across a large dog bed).

I located a pair of new Taylors; a 200 series ($699) and a 400 series ($1700+).  The 200 felt really nice, with a very comfortable neck and sounded good. The 400 had a more rounded neck and didn't play or sound much better. Although the 400 is obviously better-constructed, I would have bought the 200 if I were in the market.

    Lefty Taylor 200 series

Later on I found an interesting burst Strat. It was earlier 70's because it had no serial number on the headstock, no skunk stripe on the back of the neck and a three-position switch. It played pretty well and I inquired about it. Turns out it was a `71 and they wanted $12k for it.  Oops. It sure didn't play that nicely.

There were some beautiful Marshalls there. Breathtaking stuff at breath-stealing prices. There was a `74 100w JTM full stack in pretty good condition. The stack was priced at $3500. I have this head in 50w - getting old sometimes has its advantages. There were some $7k heads and $8k cabinets. I saw an 8x10 cab and all sorts of rare stuff, including a 20w Marshall p.a. (no, really). Don't even ask.

    1974 Marshall 100w stack

Usually there are some spectacular really old guitars but I didn't notice too many, as they were all backwards. Ok, there were quite a few 50's Gibsons and Fenders. Sweet stuff. The market must be down, as the prices required only an arm - not a leg too.

BEST TAG of the show award: 1960 Strat - some 1960 parts.

Up near the end, I saw a Fender Coronado in antigua (PUKEBURST)!  Behind it.....
    HOLY F---- IT'S A LEFT-HANDED PUKEBURST STRAT!!!
I have one - it's my #1 guitar. I deperately want a matching Tele but I'm open to another Strat. It could be mine for the bargain price of $2700 (a bit on the high side, to be polite).  After clearing the drool from my mouth, I picked it up and gave it a go. Appearancewise, it was a perfect match to mine.  Playingwise, something was off. I'm out of practice, so that might be it. I'm also experiencing a nasty side effect of a medicine; the shakes. That could be it too.  As the guitar turned out to be local, I wanted to bring my guitar around for a comparison.

    1978 LEFTY antigua (pukeburst) Strat
    my 1977 lefty pukeburst Strat

When I got home, I picked mine up and it played like butter.  In my substantial experience with late seventies Fenders, there are two necks; Heavenly and DOGS. Mine was heavenly, the other was a DOG.  It would have been nice to have it for the collection but I obviously don't have unlimited funds.

Got to talk to some vendors too. One guy had a bunch of Strymon pedals. These babies go for $400-500 each and some people have several on their pedalboards. The guy told me that he would never have predicted the popularity of these pedals, given the cost. Yet he can't keep them in stock. Also chatted with a vintage pedal guy who had an H&K tube Rotosphere.  This box is a Leslie emulator (those huge brown boxes with rotating horns that sit behind organ players). It's almost impossible to emulate these but this pedal is The Stuff. Jeff Beck uses one, so it should probably be good enough for me. Once I buy it, I mean.

    Gorgeous Gibson!

It was a really good show. I'll see you at the Fall Philly show.
