Will Somebody Please Pronounce Ghislane?

Your love is like  gray meatballs, from the convenience store.

Yes, I'm easily impressed. It absolutely knocks me out to watch people typing on their phones with 1 hand. As a guitar player, I have some manual dexterity, but typing with 1 hand is like petting a giraffe's head from Dick Cheney's underground lair. Watching people type quickly is also mind-numbing. I have non-professionally graded my typing as 1 error for every key typed, and this is typing slowly.

So if you want to impress me, show me you have no gag reflex bang away at the drums phone. Or pop by with some pizza, from the place we tithe to. Like I said, I'm easily impressed.

These made-up days are just giving me headaches.... Black Friday, Black Sunday, Cyber Monday, and now, Giving Tuesday. I noticed there's never a Give to lefty Wednesday, or Show Sympathy to Mrs lefty Sunday. Mind you, sympathy to Mrs lefty is a universal concept. No matter who I introduce to Mrs lefty, their first words are always "I'm so sorry." It doesn't matter if they're from work, bands, plumbing organizations - they always say that. Don't ask me - I have no idea. I'm a heavenly experience every day.

Today I identify as   that alien thing from the movie, that covered their faces

As the Flying AIDS vaccine approaches, we need to decide who gets its first. And who decided who gets it first. At this point, a committee of 'expert' advisers for the CDC makes recommendations. We need someone with more mojo, like the people who decide which shoes are going on sale at Target, or what coffee will be the special at Starbucks - people with import, style, and the aforementioned mojo.

After we (they) decide on who decides, it's time to decide who gets the Magic Flying AIDS Cure<tm> first..

  • some of the most important people in the world are the staff of convenience stores. Where will you get your coffee and donuts in the morning before going off to do your important work? Think about it.
  • operators of adult websites - they're the highest rated for some reason or other, plus we need something to do while imprisoned in our own houses
  • pizza delivery - do I really need to explain?

Of course we'll need a list of the last people to get vaccines too...

  • anybody in media - do you really need to read about this shit anymore?
  • Congress
  • people who send emails with emojis in the subject
  • the Top 20 album sales - truly disposable
  • CDC and WHO executives
  • anybody who doesn't want it and/or doesn't trust it

My very complicated relationship with Guitar Center continues, with the latest email telling me to have no regrets about taking advantage of the deals. Just the other day it was threatening to tell my wife about some visit I made with a woman who wasn't her, and now it wants me to take advantage of it. This is what you call a dangerous retail establishment: you know no matter what you do, it's not going to work out well, possibly involving the police and a no-contact order.  So I'm warning you, good readers, not to fall for any of this stuff. It will not work out well, and you cannot access ThermionicEmissions in jail.

Perhaps because of the holidays, the aliens are still at it. The disappeared Utah monolith which turned up in Romania has itself disappeared. These guys are really active this season, maybe because the Betelgeuse situation has been solved. I don't know these aliens any better than you, but I'd watch my anus, if I were you.

  • UPDATE: the monolith re-reappeared, atop a California mountain. Although the aliens have an interesting sense of humor, it is somewhat less than fully developed.

Dear lefty

  • although it is societal convention, you should definitely keep yours on - you do not want the top of your head visible, generally from the neck up.

It Went BOOM

The Arecibo telescope, starting to have 'destructive events' lately, has gone all the way and collapsed.

Invasive wasps are creating incidents with passenger planes.

An absolutely ingenious way to get rid of surveillance tech has reared its absolutely ingenious head: discover the tech is actually racist, misidentifying black faces and confusing broom handles with guns. As we know, anything even accused of racism is a non-starter. So we just identify all surveillance tech as racist - no problem.

One of the biggest booms in my life was Led Zeppelin. I never got to see them live. This article puts kind of a nasty period on one of my favorite bands. For years, I've wondered why we hear no more... I think we have an answer.

  • the Amazon Quantum Uncertainty Delivery Principle is in high gear, having proved thus far that November 31 is November 31, but packages to be delivered November 31 will be delivered December 1-2.
  • The aforementioned Principle has been further modified to show that any day a package is promised for delivery has a higher chance of a Kennedy being elected (and remaining) in high office.

A new view of international financial health has been introduced by a Chicago aquarium, which takes its penguins for field trips to movie theaters, art museums, and football stadiums. Apparently the birds like to get out and be stimulated, when they're not following their keepers around.

I have inadvertently wound up with a Wife Detector. It only works at home:

It's Penny, the Wonder English Cocker.

When Mommy leaves, Penny's by the window, pining away. While this doesn't tell me where Mommy went, shoe shopping is always a good guess.

When Mommy's in her office, I know because Penny's in my office, staring intently at me, hoping I'll open Mommy's office door so Penny can sit next to her. She will continue to sit there, with her huge brown eyes, begging me to get her mother.

Cockers with abandonment issues (redundant, I know) can be put to good use.

An International Council on These Sorts of Things<tm> has expressed alarm over the LGBT communities' inclusion, thus far expanding their abbreviation to LGBTQIA+. The Council warns that their moniker hurts tolerance by requiring more letters every few months, ruining old letterhead and requiring new, plus putting people who don't know the latest few letters at risk from the tolerant group.

An Oscar-nominated actor came out as trans; formerly coming out as queer. Pretty soon there will be a checklist, I fear

I look at this the same way as I look at hiring people: the best person for the job - not their color, gender, race, or feelings about vanilla over chocolate. Naturally this fellow is being praised as a superhero, not for his acting ability, but for coming out.

Warning: guys, if you look at his picture and say you'd ask for a date, you'd be queer too. Perhaps this will require even more designations, whereby you get some percentage for being attracted to someone's birth gender, as opposed to current one. Nah, you'd wind up tarred as some sort of -phobic. Contrary to current belief, there are some benefits to being CIS-hetero.

  • The UK is the first country to approve a 'fully tested' Flying AIDS vaccine.
It has been stated to be around 95% (that's 15% British) successful. Aside from the conversationally nasty nose hair, tendency for eyeballs to stare at each other (when they're not rolling backwards, into the head, like errant slot machines), occasional sex change, tendency to make you threaten the Nicaraguan President, permanent foot switch from left to right, joining foreign nose-picking competitions,  voting repeatedly for Biden, and repeated efforts to kill your own children, or anyone else's), this is a perfectly safe vaccine. Boris Johnson would have taken it himself, but he is just a hair frightened about the dunking one's head in acid side effect, which the Ministry of Silly Side Effects has listed, in a sealed filing cabinet, at the home of the lead janitor, up on the roof, under 12 other sealed filing cabinets, for public display.

    1. The vaccine should be tested on politicians first.
    2. If they survive, the vaccine is safe
    3. If they don't, the country is safe.

    Imaginary Interview: Jimmy Page

So far in our Imaginary Interview series, we've brought you... ummm... several imaginary interviews with high profile musicians. Today we're over the top, with legendary guitarist, studio man, rock star, and lover of underage groupies, Mr. Jimmy Page - James Patrick Page.

    How are you, Sir?

    Nah, don't call me that.

    Aren't you a Sir?

    Oh, yeah, call me that.

    How are you, Sir?

Good.  You know, doing this, doing that, doing my wife.  Ave you seen er?

    Well yes, I have.

    Isn't she something?

    Yes, I have.
    She does art, doesn't she?

Yeah, somin like that. I have to go to galleries and stuff. I tell you - it's worse than touring with Plant, it is.

    What's she - thirty-something?

Yeah, a bit long in the tooth. Might have to trade her in for a new model.

Yeah, she's like two of your old ones, isn't she?

Yeah, my solicitors have asked me not to comment on that.

Jimmy, Sir, what's it like to be a Rock God, in addition to a Guitar God?

Well, we had no idea, did we? We were just doing it. Playin the music. Working in the studio and making it up as we went along.

Somebody said, in reference to your busy days as a studio guitarist, that at one point, you were on most of the top 30 hits in England.

That's funny - I was too busy to pay attention. It was the top 50, by the way.

At what point did you realize you provided the soundtrack for millions of lives?

    What time is it? [snickers]

    Was there pressure?

If you ask the press, yes. We were one of the most hated acts in the known universe, according to them. We were horrible. Fortunately the fans proved otherwise.

    Everything went platinum, didn't it?

Well, not immediately. Sometimes it took as long as a month.

As Tom Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part.

I hate him. That voice. Wrote some good songs, but....

Even more important, you influenced generations of guitar players, from beginners on up. Your legacy will continue to influence players.

Ave you heard the radio lately? Any guitar would have to be an influence.

Ok, but you came from the Holy Yardbirds Triumverate: Page, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck. Could you be in any better company?

Have you ever seen my groupies?  Nah, just kidding. Eric..Eric can really put it forward. He's the authentic blues purist. I took it way out there and distorted it. Eric is the truest. Except for the Heroin Years. Cocaine was shit.

    And Jeff Beck?

Jeff is a purist too. We just haven't found at what yet. Maybe he's a purist of the kind of stuff they play on Mars. Where he comes up with that stuff, I have no idea. He's always moving, inventing, and all without a pick.

Do you enjoy being an influence?

It's kind of hard to grasp. It's pretty nice, though.
We were touring nonstop for the first few albums. We were very insulated, so we had no idea what was going on outside our little touring group. It's probably better that way. It's good to look back on it, but I never set out to do it.

From what I understand, your insular little touring group was more like a four ring circus.

Well, we were on the road, burning up all that energy onstage. Unfortunately we had way too much energy in general. It got boring, so we had to create our own fun.  Idle hands are the devil's work.

Speaking of which, you lived in Alestair Crowley's house, didn't you?

Bloody cold, drab place that was. I didn't hear about Crowley until a year after I bought it. I didn't enter it until a year after I bought it. As for the black magic - it was so much nonsense. I didn't find out that I was into it for years after I moved out of the place.

But the whips and chains suitcase...

Oh that. Well. yeah. Sure. the suitcase. Nothing black about the suitcase at all. A rock star has to have his toys, doesn't he?

So this fun you had to create.. I hear they renamed LA's Hyatt House the Riot House.

Yeah, we did that one, yeah.

Is it true about Bonzo and the pool table?

    Pool table?

Yes, that he destroyed it and threw it out the window?

    Really?

    That's the popular story.

Nah, nobody told me that. It was probably our manager, Peter Grant. He was a bloody fat man who took great care of his charges. You didn't cross Peter Grant. Even the band were afraid of Fat Pete, as we called him.  He was a wise businessman too. If we weren't having a good enough time, he would invent stuff. He used to tell the press, who slagged us constantly but stood in line to cover us, that we were getting up to all sorts of things in hotels. The truth is that Bonzo was really into classical literature.

    Really.

Oh yeah, he was writing a novel in the style of Shakespeare.

    How was it?

Well, he had to decipher Shakespeare first. I mean... haven't you ever read Shakespeare? Bloody same words in a different language, innit? You think he drank himself to death. That was Grant. In truth, while working on the novel, he popped an aneurysm trying to understand it and Bob was his uncle. I miss him. Especially at sheep-shearing time.

You guys tore up the stage, but lived in hidden mansions in the middle of nowhere, England. How do you reconcile the two?

Well, it was a lot cheaper in the middle of nowhere. There were no hotels to destroy. There were no young birds to pull. My wife at the time had absolutely no sense of humor about groupies. That's why she's my wife at the time. I'm still paying for her. Rock star marriages are cheap compared to rock star divorces.

Back to the present day, what can we expect from Jimmy Page? I heard rumors of a tour in 2018.

That one never came together. You have no idea how hard it is to find people to play with. Nobody wants to play with Jimmy Page.

Jimmy, all of your serious musician friends can name 400 people you should play with, as opposed to... ummm.. your previous efforts.

    Nobody tells me anything.

    Price of fame?

    Quite.

So I gotta ask you about Stairway.

Yeah, the new place has a winding one.

    Stairway to Heaven.

No, it don't go that far.

    Your song Stairway to Heaven.

Oh that one. Did I play on that?

    You cowrote it.

Oh yeah, that's the one that went on forever. Plant's words were even farther out there than normal.

    What do they mean?

How the fucking hell should I know? Plant can't even tell you.

He sang them with such conviction. It's the anthem of all school students from the mid 70s on.

Well. yeah, that was his thing.  You know how, if you say something with an authoritative voice, people believe you? Plant sang everything with an authoritative voice, so people thought he was deep. The words to Stairway weren't supposed to be the final words - they were only used as a guide for when he was done writing the full words. The album got out before we corrected that. Between you and me, the critics were right on that one.

What's the story on the famous doubleneck? On your first tour with the Firm, the tech put it out on a stand and it got an ovation.

I used a Fender XII in the studio and needed some way to play a 12 and a 6 for the entire song. I had Gibson whip one up for me. It's special - no one knows, aside from Gibson, how it differs from a regular doubleneck. That's why I get so much per guitar they sell.

Should we expect a tour any time soon?

    Oh yeah, definitely.

    Who will be touring?

    I don't know yet.

What did the rest of you do while Bonzo attempted to assimilate Shakespeare? Or while Shakespeare tried to assimilate Bonzo? I hear Billy was a serious drinker.

Well, it was evenly split between the three of us. Robert used to run around the hotel, trying not to get caught by the screaming groupies. He frequently lost, meaning he won. I think his record was four. Simultaneously. Then four more. Then their mothers. Sometimes their pets.  Jonesy, he had a fondness for napping. He was so accomplished, he could nap onstage and no one would be the wiser. I think most of Song Remains the Same was videotaped while he was napping. Me, I... well.... I was destroying underage groupies, which was ok because I'm Jimmy Page. And keeping an eye on stocks. You know, stocks and groupies. As for the destruction, it was mostly Jonesy, the quiet one.

It always is. I saw an interview with you guys on Leno. Jones was the talkative one. Witty, too.

Yeah, he puts that on when tv cameras get near. He spent the entire plane ride napping. But when he put his mind to it, he could do incredible damage to a hotel. Absolutely unequaled in the annals of rock. This is the stuff you didn't hear.  He's very shy, so nobody published a word of it. If anything got out, Bonzo got blamed. Jonesy is a fan of explosives. He has a masters in demolition, so he didn't mess about. When he needed a hotel taken down, it got taken down. But he was a gentle man - he had the guests relocated first, at his expense. Then BOOM. He was so good, he could destroy only one room, all the way up to a city block.

Bonzo used to drive the staff crazy with his constant demands for fresh towels. Some nights he'd have 75 fresh towels brought up. No one knows why. He was also fond of tea, a nice robe, and some really good pipe tobacco. He tipped generously, so no one complained. Unless he was mad. You didn't want to see him mad. I've seen people chew their own limbs off rather than upsetting him.

The unhappiest staff were the ones who had to clean Robert's room after we checked out. They had hazmat suits and masks. It looked like an alien invasion. It smelled worse. There were still women on the floor, in the loo, and occasionally on the ceiling. Some were still alive.

    Were you bigger than Jesus?

Lennon really had something there. He was a bit of a dirty hippie, but they really were bigger than Jesus at the time. He helped Jesus gain a little traction. We were definitely bigger than Jesus. I mean.. I'm 6' tall. Jesus couldn't have been more than 5'8". Squat fellow. Curly hair. I wish he could have worked on our staging - we needed somebody good with wood.

What was the whole mystical spiritual thing about?

Oh, that. More press from Grant. We had some photos taken in front of some sand and Grant told everyone we were at a spiritual retreat. We were at Robert's place, consuming massive amounts of alcohol. He has a basement full of it.

    A wine cellar?

Well, yeah, but on the other side, he has a stash of fun liquor the size of several supermarkets. He has ptsd, so he likes to keep stocked, for fear he won't be able to find some when he needs it.

    Who was Percy?

Percy was a nickname for Plant, around the time the pants got impossibly tight, the shirts were open all the way, and there was always .... something... in his jeans.

I don't mean to be indelicate, but Robert talked to the audience a lot and I didn't understand some of the stuff he said.

No matter, neither did we. Most times we just let him get on with it. Sometimes we'd take advantage and go backstage for some chocolate milk or a Jack and Chocolate. By the time we finished our drinks, we were ready to do the next song. It got out of hand one time.. I think it was Denver 74. I had an amp melt and he started talking. Only this time he didn't stop. They flew a tech in from London, who rebuilt the entire amp while Robert was sharing wisdom with the crowd. When the lights were going down, a roadie hit him with a large frying pan and he stopped talking. Briefly. Sometimes it was hard to get through with a straight face. The audience thought we were so happy at the music we were making. We were, but we were hysterical over Robert's behavior.  If you ever interview him, you must remember to call him Robert. Rob, Bob, Johnny, and Sugarpie are right out. You'll get a serious tongue-lashing, but you might not understand any of it. One guy at a stadium called him Bob. I think he's still at the loony bin after all these years. Don't get Robert mad or you'll get a talking to.

Let's get to the meat... tell me about your guitars.

Do I play guitar? Sometimes I forget.  Oh yeah, I have a 59 Les Paul that's my baby. It was featured on everything after 1972 and I toured with it relentlessly. There's the Tele with the B-Bender, which I overused. The original Tele that Fender just reissued - that one was on every album til 1972. There's another 58 Les Paul, with custom switching on it.

    What do the switches do?

I'll be damned if I know. I just leave em where they are. If something sounds odd, I have my tech, Jimmy Stage (we call him Susan) come out and push the buttons til they're in the right order. It was fun, though, because the entire guitar community was trying to figure out how it was wired. They had no idea the switches didn't do anything and there was no way it was physically possible to do what we claimed it could do. Rock Gods need to laugh too.

You were known for Marshalls most of the time. Your more modern rigs feature Orange and other custom-looking amps. Regardless, you still sound like you.

Yes, I do have a lot of amps, I do.
Let me tell you a secret: I sound the same through everything because I use a small 5 watt Marshall that sits in back of the stacks. The stacks are there for decoration. Plus it keeps the internet guessing. Since I can't put together a band, this has become a pastime for me. Sometimes I log onto guitar forums under a fake name and join the arguing. The best times are when people say 'Page NEVER used that amp' and I actually did. It's a game that goes on all day and I never get tired of it.

Wow. That's a lot to take in.  What was it like making the Loud movie with Edge and that kid?

That was pretty fun. My favorite part is when the 6 person road crew brought in Edge's pedalboard. I have planes smaller than his pedalboard. The kid, I forget his name, eyed me reverently. Could barely play a note. Edge actually plays a note, then the delays do the rest. I played humble. Tossers.

I've never played a lefty doubleneck before. Can you get Gibson to make me one? The last one I saw was ten grand. Can I play yours?

    No. Next.

How about Les Paul #1? I'll let you play my 58 lefty reissue.... I love it when righties play my guitars.

    Still no.

How about my hyper metal ADA rack preamp with 2 tubes and a vibrator?

No.. .wait... a vibrator.. 2 tubes. .. .ok.

    I feel honored.

Your playing is shit, by the way.

Jimmy.. I've been waiting all my life to hear that. Fellow musicians tell me that all day, every day, but to have Jimmy frickin Page tell me I suck is like a blessing from on high.

Don't mention it. Can I keep the .. ummm... vibrator for a bit? You know, to audition the preamp....

Sure - it's the least I could do. In high schools all over the country, people used to argue over who was the best guitarist and put together celebrity bands. You got to play in a lot of bands. Unlike now...  maybe I can make some calls for you. Is this whole thing Robert's fault?

I'm sworn to secrecy on that, so I'll just say it's Robert's fault. Jonesy is all ready and Jason Bonzo takes after his father in a way that makes our hearts glad. Except for the Shakespeare, which also makes our hearts glad.

My work wife, the lesbian, says she likes your music but Plant makes her ears bleed.

For some unknown reason, we never went over well with lesbians. Maybe because Robert was prettier than most girls... we gave up guessing.

How did you come about the massive stacking of guitars you did in the studio?

If there was a spare track, there was a spare guitar. I wanted more, but they told me more would erase the bass, drums, and vocals. I didn't see the problem but they were insistent, so I went along.

It was quite a shock to a young guitar player to learn that his favorite tunes were actually played on a lot of guitars. Because of this, I learned all the parts to Ten Years Gone as one guitar. I feel silly now.

Don't feel silly. Can you uh.. show me how you did that?

You're too kind. What were your impressions of Ten Years Gone? The stacking, the production, the haunting words, the drop D tuning...

Well, as we were wont to do, Robert came in with the words and I made up the music. We knew we had an anthem with that one.

It's my favorite Led Zeppelin song of the entire catalog. Let's switch hats and I'll tell you a story. Long ago, I met my first love. She played guitar and was the most beautiful girl in the entire school. Not being a suave football type, I used guitar to get to know her. We got along famously and were together for quite a while. I taught her Ten Years Gone. When she got hold of a new song, she would play it constantly, to the point I'd beg her to find a different song. She carried on, undeterred. She passed way to early, so every time I hear the song, I think of her.

I'm sorry, what did you say? I was in the loo.

Never mind.  Are you writing anything new these days? We're all pretty hungry for some epic Page. And the whole reissue thing has petered out. How about some video of a really good Zep concert; one where Jones was awake throughout?

That was a rumor. The footage doesn't exist.

Did you know there's an entire community dedicated to your equipment? These guys can tell everybody which Tone Bender version you were using at which show. And when you changed to the next version. And which guitars you used at which concert.

That's quite odd. It's time to go on the internet again under the fake name. I'm going to start a rumor that one of the switches on the main Les Paul actually did something, but I'm not going to tell them which switch or what it did.  This should take up most of 2019 and give me great joy.  Since you haven't asked me any stupid questions, I'll tell you. It was a signal to my cigarette roadie that I needed another one. Between songs or guitar changes, he'd light up two; one for me and one for the Les Paul. If I got done first, I got the Les Paul's fag too.

What influence did the cigarettes have on your playing?

Depending on the results of my next doctor visit, cancer.  They were always getting in the studio's equipment and fouling things up. We ruined several 24 track decks with just my smoke. They left in a yellow state. Looked like its liver had stopped working and it had jaundice. We'd keep track of the machines with a slash on the studio wall. Physical Grafitti ran through six of them.

Jimmy, thanks for coming by and sharing so much information with me and all four of my blog readers.  Jimmy? Jimmy?

And with that, all I saw was curtains flying. He had disappeared into the ether. Probably to write some new tunes or put together a band. Or log into the internet.

This Blog Needs More Diversity and Inclusion

Some guy on tv is arguing that more diversity is needed in government, to celebrate a large pool of skills and foster inclusion.

He went on to say he bases himself on Martin Luther King.
I'm not MLK's biographer, but my understanding is that Dr. King wanted black people to elevate themselves, not be given preference because of their color.

ThermionicEmissions would like to thank the president for not bombing Iraq. Or Iran. We predicted the warmongers would win and thus far, they haven't. We need to eradicate constant war and focus on Home.

As I type this, the 90 year old neighbor is mowing her lawn. Again. Weekly.
I should probably feel bad I have to be forced to mow mine every few weeks.
We tried to get a service to do both lawns, but she says she likes mowing. Somehow, the list of things I want to be able to do when I'm 90 does not include mowing. Hell, the list of things I want to do now doesn't include mowing.

Speaking of death and introspection, there will be an auction of the late Burt Reynolds' possessions soon. The items range from credit cards to boots to his one-off Camaro for the Bandit movies.

You and I are nobody (I think). We are extremely unlikely to see our Stuff auctioned after we go wherever we go, if we go at all.

Think about it: somebody had to go into his house and collect these things.
Would you want your entire life to be auctioned off upon your passing? ("I won't care" is one acceptable answer.)

What kind of Stuff will be found post-mortem?
    Your collection of 1970s Playboys
Farrah Fawcett and Kim Karsdashian posters
A drawer full of condoms, way past their expiration date
The chair you farted in for the last 30 years of your life
Your collection of belly button lint (from others)
27 small hard drives full of 1980s porn
    43 used socks
The password to your Faceyspaces account

It's damn creepy, from the point of view of the living.
It also raises way too many ugly philosophical questions.

It's a Good Thing People Don't Have to Remember to Breathe

Speaking of net neutrality, Verizon throttled Santa Clara County, California, fire company's 'unlimited' data plan. This fire company happened to be fighting the fires out there and had to pay Verizon more money to end the serious throttling, even after explaining about the fires. As this is America, there is a lawsuit.

What have we learned? That cable companies' definition of Unlimited is Somewhat Unlimited.

    • This morning's 7am noise was something very loud that required a backup beeper. Wife said it was a neighbor, this time digging up his driveway. I've seen this drive... you could eat off it and use it to calibrate your level.
    • I've known the owner since we moved in. He had this child with a frightening look in his eyes. Wife and I looked at each other and agreed that there are many dead animals in his back yard, because that's how psychopaths start. This same child just bought the house from his parents. I'll bet he's trying to unearth his ex-pets. Maybe he's making amends. Maybe he's making dinner.. who knows?

The electric company in Naperville, IL, wants to put electronic 'smart' meters on everybody's service, with no opt-out. Some people in Naperville were very opposed to this, as everyone should be, and filed suit to stop it. At very least, this is a violation of the Fourth Amendment (search and seizure). Additionally, this would allow the electric company to determine electrical usage and a profile of the user. This is why these meters must be opposed. You know this data will be sold.

The judge agreed that this is Search. However, and there's always a however:
.....because the collection of smart meter data allows utilities to reduce costs, provide cheaper power to consumers, encourage energy efficiency and increase grid stability, it is very much in the government’s interest and can be allowed.

Although a Constitution fan, it's possible I could be ignorant of certain legal concepts. If any of you know, please chime in.

The Fourth, as indicated above, guarantees against illegal search and seizure. This means the police require a warrant to enter your house, which had better cover whatever they're looking for. A perfect example of this is drunk driver stops. Although somehow ruled legal, the police have no reasonable suspicion that anyone driving on the road is drunk, yet they stop you. Additionally, if they find money on you and seize it, that is also illegal (although needs to be fought in some states).

Here's where things get shaky: The Amendments, to my knowledge, are solid; not to be balanced against government interest. Here's a hypothetical: your local police department (or SWAT) breaks down your door, without a warrant, looking for guns. They find guns and confiscate them. In court the homeowner's lawyer claims a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment.  Let's face it - he's right. This is a clear cut case. The judge agrees: this is illegal Search and Seizure. However, and there's always a however, the government's interest in removing guns is reasonable and the case is dismissed.

    Do you see my problem?
    It's your problem too.

    • Still have a Faceyspaces account? They want to figure out if you're legitimate or a fake news provider. You will be assigned a rating on how trustworthy you are.
    • Since when is it the job of social media to indicate your trustworthiness? By what standards is this judged? Can standards apply? Will the political leanings of the decider affect the answer?

I watch LivePD. I have a strange affection for police shows, aside from the previous rant about the War on Drugs.  There's another show called Nightwatch, which is live ambulance crews in different states. LivePD is very instructive. Today I learned that it's perfectly ok to wear a bra and shorts, but only if you're female and have a humongous gut that hangs over your waist or sticks straight out, like a beer gut. These grown women are on national tv looking like this.

The criminals are a lot different than years back. They stand there and argue with the police, then get righteously indignant when the police want to pat them down. Don't forget that everybody's a lawyer. When the guy in his house fires a gun and the police taze him and carry him away, he's screaming the entire time that they didn't have a warrant to enter his house. This guy screamed at the top of his lungs for about 15 minutes. The producer of the show, who apparently hates his audience, kept the cameras rolling the entire time. I have to give the police credit for not tazing a large percentage of people they meet. This is precisely why I'm not allowed to have a taser.

I also found out that everybody is related, cops and criminals. Everybody calls everybody else 'bro'. Ok, mostly the men. Some lady called the police because somebody parked in her spot and is disrespecting her. It's a great thing it's not illegal to be an asshole: we'd have to triple the number of police on the streets.

Here's one tip: you can get out of a strip search if you defecate all over yourself.

    • I was minding my business when I got a picture in text. It's my best friend, standing next to Jeff Lynne, of ELO.  People around me live very exciting lives. I make shit up and put it on a blog.
    • I take that back: a couple of porn stars follow me on Twitter. [@leftystrat]

Today was another one of those days.
You know them.... the days where something doesn't go right, then nothing else goes right. It's kinda like a dark slapstick comedy that rolls downhill like a snowball, smashing at house at the bottom.

We're watching tv. Wife decides to go up for a nap. I decide to stretch out on the sofa for my own nap. Just as I drift off, Wife comes down the steps. We watch 10 minutes of tv and Wife goes up for another nap. I dare not try again because she'll be down again. Watching her nap is like watching a tennis ball. Up. Down. Up. Down. Up Down. The joke is always on me because she doesn't sleep.

I need breakfast, because it's getting close to 2pm. In the kitchen is leftover pizza, which I can't wait to eat. Oops, the ants have won this battle. You do NOT screw with a man's pizza, especially this pizza. I killed each one of them individually, using different methods. The real problem here is how to discourage other ants from trying this sort of thing. The Mongols would cut off their enemies' heads and put them on posts at the city limits, as a warning to anyone else who would try it. Have you ever tried to cut off 100 ants' heads? And put them on posts, as a warning to any other ants who might try it? Maybe if I staple them to the pizza box.

I go back to the couch and immediately kick something very heavy, creating pain in my foot worse than the pain developing in my head. Why was it in the way? Because we moved it. No matter where we move something, one of us will kick it or trip over it. If we nailed it to the ceiling, we'd find a way to trip over it.

I want a bigass tablet, but they're prohibitively expensive. I have my old first generation large tablet, which I retrieved. Annnnd there's no charging cable. This was back when every company used their own cables. I saw this cable within the last 2 weeks, so naturally I couldn't find it. I looked where I put all the cables I find. Nope. It was difficult to see because my house has no natural light. It's so bright you'll burn out your eyes if you go outside, but most of my house is black. The house was designed by someone with one of those diseases where they can't get sun or they'll develop herpes or something. As a consequence, the windows were placed so the sun won't shine in the house unless it rises in the north and sets in the south. We used to have this really cool halogen lamp that lit up the entire floor. They were made illegal because they fell over and started fires. I'm perfectly willing to take that chance, but nooooo. You can't buy a 200w bulb anymore, so unless I want to have 12 lamps in my living room, I'm screwed. So Wife gives me one of her 427 flashlights; the only one she can find. As soon as I point it where I need to look, it flickers. Of course it flickers, it's a super bright LED flashlight. Technology has definitely improved our lives.. the bulbs can flicker much longer these days.

Turning around, I tripped over my shoes.
I took a pause to reflect and for inspiration, at which point a large Styrofoam package fell on my head. I'm doing well - I haven't killed anyone in a long time. I switch on the small halogen light, which is very efficient. It gets so hot, it could cook the (ant-covered) pizza in the kitchen. It smells because dust lands on it. Well, dust plus the shade I made out of the skulls of my enemies. Giving up, I decide to heat something in the oven. On the way to the kitchen, I kicked something...

    What is today's lesson?
It's harder to remember your medicine on weekends.
And make sure that when you put the heads of enemies on posts, the posts are UL approved for use in your city.

    • I get more entertainment from ticket companies than some of the acts they promote. Today's was Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening. Right under that was the music of Michael Jackson vs. Justin Timberlake.
    • I'm going to give Jason Bonham a pass: his father was John Bonham, of Led Zeppelin. When the Zep played the O2 center in England, Jason played drums. So you figure if he played with Led Zeppelin, he might be good. However, and there's always a however, the music of Michael Jackson vs. Justin Timberlake? And you have to pay to watch it? No, this is obviously a leftover April Fools joke. People who aren't Michael Jackson or Justin Timberlake are going to dress up and sing their songs, in some sort of competitive game, and you are expected to fork over money to watch it? What a cruel joke....

Speaking of cruel jokes, RIP Senator John McCain (R-Hell). I am repeatedly reminded not to speak ill of the dead. Repeatedly. So I'll just say that the good senator never met a country that wouldn't look better with bombs falling on it. Lockheed paid tribute to him publicly and immediately regretted it. Because John was a Class A Warmonger, billions went to Lockheed. Of course they regret his passing.

The Hair on my Left Elbow is Killing Me

Due to my love affair with the couch, I seem to be attaining a soda belly. It's not my fault.. I'm not doing anything different.

Wife brings me some fresh cupcakes. I thank her and remind her, for the fourth time this week, that I'm trying to cut down.

"SINCE WHEN DO YOU CARE WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE?"

After that, she went to visit my parents. Mom was taping flowers to the wall. This is not a good thing. Mom would have ordered special flower mounts, not used tape.

    It's just another day.

    • Saturday: 80 degrees. Sunday: 40 degrees. Monday: 4 hour flash flood warning. Tuesday: raining carburetors.

It's a sad thing to have to admit, but I never saw Led Zeppelin live. I did, however, catch the solo tours of Page and Plant immediately after. Page's doubleneck guitar got a round of cheers as it was put on its stand.

Everyone seems to be up for a reunion except Plant. It's difficult to form an opinion on this.. I want to see Led Zeppelin, as do millions across the globe. Plant's reasoning is that he doesn't want to be a best-of act. Understood, but if you do new material, you're not a best-of act. Meanwhile, his solo career is going well. I've seen a few concerts online and his band is in fine form and the songs are good. They even slip in a reworked Zep tune here and there. Recommended.

What's bothering me at the moment (as opposed to what's bothering me in general or specifically at any other moment) is something about Plant's solo career.  I don't even know what it is.  Recently I discovered some live shows from the early 80s. I was there, front and center, at the hockey stadium. For whatever reason, it became very important to listen to the concert and collect more. The music came back to me. I remembered the riffs and where everything went, including stuff I didn't remember I remembered. And then I had my fill.

Don't you know that I came across another old concert and some rehearsal material and listened for a bit. Now the songs are whirling through my head again, like one of those amusement park rides that... whirl. It is said that music recalls another time and place. I certainly don't feel like a different time or place. I feel good tunes. Regardless, they're back again and I'm enjoying them. It's just that I always have to know why, which makes life frustrating.

    • England recently held the BAFTA Game Awards. Yes, an awards ceremony dedicated to video games. Next year, the Hand Mixer Awards air for the first time. I, for one, can't wait.

If you log into your Yahoo or AOL email (if you still have AOL email, there's little that can help you), you'll see a new privacy and terms notice. In light of the Faceyspaces scandal, they want you to know they're reading your email, and will most likely share it with Verizon, their parent company. Full disclosure is wonderful, isn't it? Don't you feel better?

Speaking of Faceyspaces, Techpinions did a survey on 1,000 people, of which 9% said they deleted their accounts. I'm trying to figure out if this is a good thing or a bad thing. If the numbers hold, it's a pretty significant thing. To reach 9-10% of Faceyspaces users usually requires the personal invitation of a Kardashian. Or meth. While this number is significant, I'm bothered it wasn't higher. THANK YOU, SIR, MAY I HAVE ANOTHER?

Speaking of Faceyspaces again, they just deleted over 100 private discussion groups that have been facilitating identity fraud and cybercrime on the platform for years. Faceyspaces did not discover the groups by themselves. The whole operation would've been quick and efficient if someone complained that the groups were hate groups, run by right wingers.

    • Many Android device manufacturers are not telling the truth when they say they have patched phone vulnerabilities in new updates, researchers found. Fortunately I have nothing to worry about, as my carrier is too stupid to update anything and can't even tell me if I'm going to get the next version of Android.

They just got hit with a $40 million FCC settlement by using fake ringtones. When you'd call someone out of range, they'd play ringtones, making you think the other party was hearing the phone ring. This was banned in 2014. Ever wonder where the settlement money goes? Certainly not to the affected parties.

David Buckel, famed gay rights lawyer, set himself on fire in New York to protest the use of fossil fuels. In a statement, the nations of the world pledged to stop using fossil fuels immediately. I sure hope he didn't use an accelerant.

    • It is of no matter that there are gays in the NFL. What does bother me is that the Social Justice Warriors (SJWs) are starting to get by the detectors. NFL player and activist Terry Crews said:
    • “People have to understand that masculinity can be a cult, and when I say cult, it’s not different from David Koresh, it’s not different from Jim Jones,”
Is this some sort of Halloween joke, where he dresses as a football player but in reality is some crazed uber-feminist with green hair? The cult of SJW is large and strong now.

A substitute teacher in the Philadelphia school district has been suspended for allegedly hitting first graders.  That's one way to teach respect early on...

Speaking of Philthy, Mother Nature was booked yesterday for drunk driving. There was a line of coke on the dash and a speedball in her pocketbook.

    • A college in California (of course) is hosting a No Whites Allowed pool party.  Can you imagine a college hosting a No Blacks Allowed pool party? There would be riots and calls to burn the school down.
    • The invite stated only "people who identify as POC" permitted to attend (person of color).
    • No problem. I identify as a person of color. And a fire engine! Vroom vroom - wooooooooooooooo!

A few days back, there was an incident in a Philadelphia Starbucks, that has no doubt gone around the world. The only facts not in dispute are that there were two male People of Color. The employees told the men they couldn't use the restroom if they weren't paying customers. They called the police, who escorted them out. Both the police, who were on camera, and the mayor state that the police did nothing wrong. The POC are claiming racism. Starbucks has apologized, letting a POC spokesperson deliver the news. Philly's Groups You're Supposed to Apologize To are apoplectic, saying that they will not accept Starbucks' apology.

The mayor will meet with Starbucks, along with his HR Helpers in case of Unconscious Bias. Starbucks will force sensitivity training. It's good that the mayor could take time away from soda taxes and his great work with his sanctuary city.

Unconscious bias. What a great term!  Is racism losing its effectiveness?

Later that night, in a Philadelphia row home:

Dad, I learned about racism today in school. It's terrible. I'm not racist, am I?

No, son, you're not overtly racist, but we have to consider that you might be unconsciously racist.

    What is uncongslee racist?

Well, you could be racist and not know it.

But Dad... how can I be racism and not know it?

Err... you could have a tiny little racism gene, waaaaaay down inside.

    Well how do I know?

That's why the school district says everyone has to take unconscious racism training.

[crying] But Dad... I'm NOT a racist!

I know, Bobby, but you have to trust the training.

Will it tell me if I'm racist?

    Um.. not entirely.

Then why do I have to take it - you know I hate tests.

Because everyone is racist, son. Unconsciously at least.

    Who says that?

    Human Resources departments.

    How do they know?

Because... uhhhh.. they were told so.

    By who?

    Industry people. Mostly lawyers.

Do lawyers know if you're racist?

No, lawyers know that it's bad publicity to not look like you're doing something, plus people of color will blame you for being racist.

So I might not be racist unconshly?

No, but they invented the term just in case.

    Dad, what's white privilege?

SHUT UP AND GO DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Thank God for the federal government. Without their intrusive nannying, it's a wonder any one of us is still alive. The FDA has banned the sale of caffeine in bulk quantities directly to consumers.  No, seriously. They said it could lead to injury or death.

Still no word on aspartame, or the thousands of other things they approved that can cause injury or death. Next week, the FDA will ban water, because too much water can kill you. Look up hyperhydration or water toxemia.

If any of you can snag an interview with Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson, can you ask them about this? I'm pretty sure their intent was to allow citizens to make their own mistakes.

    • What kind of pussies work at the ACLU? Just because the government will soon have the ability to monitor your 'health' by turning on every sensor your phone has, doesn't constitute a privacy problem.
    • I call BS. They can already turn on the sensors. This is just preparing us for the announcement. Even if you don't believe me, you can still see it happening, right out in the open.

    That Damn Cartoon Music

I've been a Frank Zappa fan for as long as I can remember.
And why not? When you put a song like Yellow Snow near a teenager, it's bound to happen.

I had no choice but to dig deeper into the catalog. I liked more and more of his music. The first album (yes, album) I got was The Mothers, Live at the Fillmore 1971. This quickly became a favorite, playing over and over, even though I had to get up to flip the record every time. Aside from the very interesting musicianship, the thing that got me was the fantastic interplay between the singers, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan. Only later did I learn they were The Turtles (Happy Together, actually performed on the album), aka Flo and Eddie. These two were hysterical and worked incredibly well together and with the band. Of course Frank rehearsed them to the edge of their lives. It was a huge production, and I wanted to see that live. Alas, this was a small part of Zappa history, without a ton of video I could locate. This was also before the internet [SHOCK and AWE!].

The theme of the album was being a rock star and traveling all over the country, meeting and trying to bed groupies.  Between the hilarity was instrumental bits that were kind of interesting. Not the usual masturbatory guitar solos I listened to normally. Frank was a great guitar player and a complete 180 degrees from anyone else who played. He played for as long as he wanted, and it was interesting all the way. The instrumental bits were not all guitar solos - he had other interesting things happening, but not too weird... just slightly out in his own neighborhood. Do you see why I never got called to write reviews professionally?

It's a good thing, too. Whenever I read or hear a review, I always wonder if the reviewer and I listened to the same piece of music. What I heard as ear-piercing howling, the reviewer referred to as 'the wide range of the lead singer's voice'.

In any case, further explorations into Frank's catalog turned up a few more hits and catchy bits. And even more strange, out there compositions. I refer to them as compositions because that's what we was: a composer. Yes, he had songs, but some of the stuff he did was beyond explanation; way too complex for my young ears to grasp. So I left the compositions there and enjoyed the Joe's Garage trilogy.

As I matured musically (who the hell am I kidding - I matured in nothing and remain the same genial hardhead I was at 16), I went back to the complex stuff and found I had an appreciation for it. Mind you, this is the music that parents and girlfriends call Cartoon Music, because it's very busy, fast, and jumps around a lot. It's also impossible for most rock musicians to play, but I appreciated the hell out of it. Mrs leftystrat, not so much. Since she processes things differently, it's too busy for her. Having read Vonnegut, especially what read like time travel, it confused the hell out of me. She said it was perfectly understandable to her. Oh well... if we were the same, there'd be no fun in it.

In listening to the more complex stuff, I gained an appreciation for what must've been involved, and composition in general. I sure as hell couldn't do that.

Try it out for yourself. A ton of his songs appears on YouTube. Funny stuff and cartoon stuff. Also a series called Shut Up And Play Your Guitar, which is, as you'd expect, only instrumental. If you like the music, please purchase it to help his kids, who are split into warring factions.

    • A blind guy goes kayaking in the Grand Canyon. Fortunately he's not crazy enough to do it himself: he takes a guide who knows the area like the back of his hand, as well as his team, which stays in touch by radio. You know what happens next, right? There's a sudden disturbance in the water, a reinforced fiberglass paddle snaps, and the kayak turns over, trapping him in the water.  The guide, I mean.

    How's Marshall?

He went for his followup visit at the acupuncturist the other day. She's very pleased at his progress. His lesion has shrunk significantly! We're beyond thrilled.

Think about this for a minute. The doctor thoroughly examines him, sticks a few needles in him and sends him home with some Eye of Newt and Stuff, and he's doing better in two weeks, maybe sooner. What does this tell you about chemicals?

Possibly to detract from getting well, his behavior has gone down the loo. He has successfully taught his mommy to walk him on command. Marshall has his own yard, so he can do whatever he wants. But there's something about his leash that makes him happy. Starting at two or three in the morning, he whines, very quietly at first, then ramps the volume and pitch until she gets up and does what he wants. Since he discovered she will walk him, he now sits by the door and whines. He trained her faster than he could ever be trained. To be fair, we never know whether the pitiful whining is pain or manipulation. My wife, bless her, lets me sleep because I have to work. Plus training me could take years.

As we know, I'm always late to the party.
    HOW LATE ARE YOU?
I'm so late that I didn't know Barry Manilow was gay until last year.
    THAT'S REALLY FRIGGIN LATE.

I didn't realize the power of my own dog.

When he went to the acupuncture doc, she and her assistant were oohing and ahhing over him, saying no way he could be 13-14 and he has a puppy face. The doc asked if it was ok to take pictures of him. Ok, but I'm not going to be a stage parent.

The regular vet practice is also incredibly fond of him. We take him when we're just picking something up and the multi-doctor practice goes on hold until everyone has come out and said hi to him. He's a celebrity.

On twitter, people follow his progress. One fan said if she lived here, she'd steal him.

That dog has more mojo than Dr John. If I ever needed a date, all I'd have to do is stand near him.

I can say, completely objectively, that he's a tremendously good looking cocker.
And some sort of furry therapist... he brings out all sorts of things in people.  Who knew?

    Going for the Boobie Prize

Donald Trump has proposed a ban on Muslims entering the country. I propose a ban on politicians entering D.C. Let the Muslims clean up their own garbage.

Never let it be said that Philadelphia isn't a warm, welcoming place. Just the other night, some samaritan deposited a severed pig head at a mosque. He even went to the trouble of having it smoked. Also this week we had three students violently assault a high-school teacher. The city of brotherly love strikes again!

One of the biggest disappointments of the last 7 years, Obama aside, is Joe Biden. Before the elections, he was the Great White Hope of Silliness, taking every opportunity to shoot himself in the foot. Since the elections, he has been silent. A recently leaked memo from Edward Snowden shows that between the odd appearance, Joe is literally handcuffed to his chair. He's let out strictly for public relations and every other Tuesday, he's waterboarded by Dick Cheney.

    A MODICUM OF MUSIC

Today is the Day of Cray. Robert Cray, that is. Robert is, as you'd expect, a fine guitar player, singer, and writer. You can see him playing the part of a bass player in Animal House. What's not to like?

One of his biggest hits is Smokin' Gun. Great, fun guitar playing and soulful singing. Surprise ending. An almost humorous lead. My late Bad Band used to murder this song but in spite of that, people always enjoyed it.

Nothin' But a Woman is cool riff-based song. Listen and enjoy. Plus, how can you not enjoy a line like 'tell me a boatful of lawyers just sank'?

The Forecast (Calls for Pain) has hit written all over it. Catchy riff, strong emotion, approachable theme. And some cool playing.

Burn It, Blow It Up and Dispose of It [Mowing]

Yes, it's that time of year again. Ok, it's toward the end of that time of year again. The time that I dread. The time that wakes me up at two in the morning, in a cold sweat, screaming NOOOOOO. It's Mower Time.
I have written extensively on Mower Time but since it's this time of year and I have been doing battle again, I feel it necessary to get this off my chest (and arms and itchy legs).

I hate mowing. Nothing new there.  But I have an absolutely irrational hatred of mowing. It's definitely not Mowphobia... phobia implies fear.  I have no fear of mowing - I actively HATE it. I'd sooner saw off a random limb by myself than mow the lawn (and I pass out at the thought of blood).

We started with a push mower. I have no idea why. Then a gas mower, which died in short order. The two anemic electric mowers, which did, at no time, run over their electrical cords. They're probably still in the Mower Graveyard (the shed). They probably still work, or whatever it is they did, in a very meek, underpowered way. The next gas mower failed for what looked like fuel reasons. I figured that since I knew the tiniest bit about engines, I'd give it a shot. After having removed the air filter and what looked vaguely like a carburetor (or carburettor, for our British reader and Queen fan), I wound up with a no movement solution. Since it was already broken, it remained broken, due to my lack of true understanding of engines. I strongly suspect that what I thought was a carburetor was actually a Quantum Space Drive and I somehow managed to extract the Quantumness from it, rendering it a pot-metal version of a non-working carburetor. Again, since it was not working before my experiment in quantum physics, I don't count this as my fault, much like my wife 'saving' us money by buying shoes on sale.

Finally we invested in a serious mower. I know it was serious because it was more expensive than what had to be less serious mowers. And it had a Big and Strategic engine, which was the engine of choice for Indy race cars and underpowered golf carts. It also had a lot of metal on it, which was damn impressive (and harder to push). Because it was a serious mower, the throttle cable broke after a season or two.  Doing my best impression of a Manly Man, I purchased a generic replacement throttle cable assembly, since I couldn't remember the model of my mower. As it turned out, I didn't need to know this, because the only product sold is the generic one.  Of course, as usual in these rants, the joke was on me: after doing my best to route the cable and performing the unthinkable task of zip-tying the cable to the handle, the cable flatly refused to control the throttle in any way, shape or form. It just flatly refused. The reason this is a joke is that this cable NEVER works. Like most other things, it's just Performance Art. You purchase it, you install it, then you curse at it because it flatly refuses to work, like a government employee or a Kardashian.

Cursing, as we know, is a required activity for repairing computers and cars (and by extension, lawnmowers). The neighbors are actually frightened of me, which is a condition that occurs normally without a mower in-hand. Parents pull their children off the street when they hear me pulling the cover off the evil device. The Department of Defense goes to DEFCON 5.

So, as an Imitation Manly Man, I work up a jury-rigged solution with chicken wire, several push pins and a hair tie we like to call Ralph. This alleged solution requires more cursing than simply trying to mow. I tie up the throttle, at which point the mower still steadfastly refuses to start. Checking the gas, I notice it's almost empty. This thing uses more gas than the old land yachts I used to drive (the ones with eight cylinder engines the size of small aircraft carriers). After having topped off, I hit the prime it button four times (because the instructions say two times - I'm just like that) and it still won't budge. This is because Ralph has slipped, turning off the throttle.  Cursing for good measure, I re-tie the wire and Ralph, which finally allows the engine to roar to life, frightening the dog. The mower immediately chokes on the grass, which is only waist high (don't ask me).  I found out later that, as it turns out, if you tie the throttle up a little further, the mower won't stall all that much, even if the grass is wet, as it is wont to be in Extremely West London, US.  So I mow. And I curse. And it takes the regulation forty minutes.

After I'm done, I race inside, sneezing from the aroma of freshly cut grass. As I struggle to the fridge, producing a two foot puddle of sweat under me, I down a cold can of grapefruit soda (you think I'm kidding? Go to the store and purchase some Sanpellegrino grapefruit, which, unfortunately, I do not get paid for talking about or drinking).

Eventually, after the leaking, sneezing and panting subside, I realize that it wasn't that soul-snatching an exercise (who am I kidding?). I make note of this for next time, so I won't have such difficulty with this most cursed of activities.  This matters not, as it takes two complete weeks of my wife dropping gentle hints (THE CRAZY LADY IS GOING TO CALL THE TOWNSHIP AGAIN, THE GRASS POLICE WILL ARRIVE SOON, I CAN'T FIND THE DOG) to get me off the couch and in the vicinity of the blasted device. After this, I can rely on failing to start the thing once or twice. Two nights ago it was too dark to mow. Then my near-fatal hangnail prevented all motion. After the grass has successfully hidden the actual mower, I have no choice but to walk past the thing a few times. Finally I prepare myself with tools, wire and a flamethrower and approach my nemesis.

Last night was beyond anything I've ever experienced. I go outside, in a perfectly positive mood, vowing to remain calm. The first time I try to tie up Ralph and fail, the cursing explosion starts, as if I've been trying this all day and it's just mocking me. This time I was ready, with solid steel wire and industrial tools. Knowing that there was no way I could even expect to tie the cable successfully, I had a pair of locking pliers with me. I tested the pliers, which clamped firmly onto the wire and would not budge or even release itself from the wire, knowing in my heart this was the solution.  I yanked on the cable, digging into the skin on my hand, and applied the pliers, locking them on the cable. Or NOT locking them, as it occurred.  The pliers, which worked perfectly in the midair test, completely failed to hold onto the cable in practice. It's like advanced math or windshield washing fluid - it simply doesn't work, leaving large white spots of bird shit on the glass (and I'm talking about the math here).

After a time or thirty of cursing at the locking pliers and applying a little pursuasion via the flamethrower, the machine roared to life, like Rosie Perez perceiving an insult. Aside from several branches placed in my way by a chuckling tree stopping the mower, I got done.  Yes, the mower had won, again, but I was experiencing the Mowing High people only whisper about, after getting their illegal performance-enhancing shots in Mowing Circles. Fortunately nobody from the township was around to urine-test me.

I ran into the house, crying and cursing, almost mowing down my wife (get it? - mowing). I demanded that the grass be burned down so I'd never have to perform the horrid activity anymore. My wife, used to a certain amount of entertainment post-mowing, did what she normally does and ignored me. I'd do much better arguing with the cat, only the cat occasionally appears happy to see me. As it turns out, the township forbids use of a flamethrower for mowing (or gas station tidying up), so I was pretty much out of luck.

A friend recommended hiring someone. This was a tremendous idea - one way too simple and brilliant for me to form. The wife got right on it, and by right on it, I mean she ignored it like I ignore anything with a lower case 'i' in front if it. She keeps trying to motivate me by saying 'this should be the last time you mow this year'. Unfortunately this fails the merit test in April and May.  You just try to hire someone to mow your lawn - go ahead - I dare you. All you get is services that want to come out weekly, mow and play with your shrubbery. I don't know about you but the last time I had my shrubbery played with was in my teens - a practice I vowed to avoid and have been thus far successful at. What about some neighbor kid who wants to earn a few bucks? No deal.. what used to be young entrepreneurs has morphed into selfie-taking, game playing kids who only leave the house to look at new phone cases (and get their tans from the refrigerator light). Plan B is that using the grass as a Doggy Bathroom would murder the grass once and for all.  Not so much, even considering the amount of liquids he consumes and his little chlorine-cleaned pool.

With only minor lacerations and thirty seven extremely itchy bug bites, I re-remind myself not to mow in shorts (or longs).  Meanwhile, I can hear the grass growing behind my back... inch by inch... it's openly laughing at me. Now I hear we've got a gopher or some such garden rodent (didn't anybody tell him we don't have a garden?) living in the shed with the old lawnmowers. The last time my wife checked, it had the unmitigated audacity to be swimming in the dog's pool! We might have to send the cat out after it - he's a born killa. He could drag the carcass in the house and onto the couch, which is still wet from the dog's last dip in the pool at two in the morning.

    I f-ing HATE mowing.

    Burning Down Your Own Block

Let it be stated for the record that the Baltimore thugs are not animals: to call them animals is a disservice to animals everywhere. Animals don't destroy their own neighborhood.

I watched them set fire to buildings. I watched minivans dropping off looters with large bags. I watched them ruining the livelihoods of their own local merchants. I watched them throw cinderblocks at firemen. I watched them slice a firehose being used to put out a fire they started. I watched them scramble when the police finally got serious.

    ------------------------

A Texas grand jury has refused to indict a woman for allegedly breaking into her neighbor's house and sexually assaulting him.  The gentleman in question awoke to feel someone on top of him and felt the offender place his penis in her mouth.

This is not an assault: it's a waking wet dream.

She broke into her husband's friend's house and forcibly had sex with him. And she's not an unattractive woman.  Her husband is now the Most Embarrassed Man in Texas.

No, seriously... why isn't this every bit the assault it would have been, had the roles been reversed? Do the rules state that it's only assault if you're the Input? Remember: a physiological response is not consent. Where are the angry women, screaming RAPE RAPE RAPE?

This brings to mind a few questions:

    1. What is the street and block number of this house?
    2. Do you think she'd be amenable to moving north?
    3. Why aren't there women on the grand jury?
    4. Why was the grand jury butt-slapping and fist-bumping on the way out of the courtroom?
    5. Why have housing values gone through the roof in that neighborhood?
    6. Did the grand jury attend a 'private party' at her house afterwards?

The attack was stopped by law-abiding citizens with guns. Remember this the next time you're taking off your shoes at the airport. Or when Congress is reauthorizing the Patriot Act.

One of my right-wing buddies sent me this.  Although I don't always agree with him, it's pretty funny:

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children in her class what their mothers did for a living.
All the usual answers came up -- teacher, nurse, businesswoman, saleswoman, doctor, lawyer, and so forth.
However, little Danny was being uncharacteristically quiet, so when the teacher gently prodded him about his mother, He replied, "Well my mother's an exotic dancer in a club and takes off all her clothes in front of men, and they put money in her underwear. Sometimes, if the offer is really good, she will go home with some guy and stay with him all night for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this bold statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some exercises and then took little Danny aside to quietly ask him, "Is that really true about your mother, dear?"
Nope," the boy said, "She works for the Democratic National Committee and is helping to get Hillary Clinton elected as the next President, ...but I was just too embarrassed to say that In front of the other kids."

This week's musical selection comes to you courtesy of Led Zeppelin, called The Rain Song. This is a song that comes up in rotation on my phone and computer and never fails to evoke a certain emotional reaction.  It starts with a really nice acoustic guitar (left), with an electric coming in on the other side. There's a brief slide there also. Your parents could listen to this too, as the strings come in for the instrumental verse section, which occurs pretty early for a rock tune.

Second verse, same as the first.  Then the bridge, where it starts to get heavy. John Paul Jones is the MVP in this song, providing strings, piano and bass. In case you care, I believe the strings were courtesy of the mellotron.*

The end comes as it started, with electric and acoustic guitars only and some great delay for the last chord. Listen to this song and tell me it doesn't affect you.

Upon us all, just a little rain must fall.

    ------------------------------------------------

*The best way to describe the mellotron is a keyboard instrument that plays a tape for each key/pitch.

Whats All This I Hear About Moose Limbs?

I just got an email from my good friends at Live Nation Concerts. I got an email because I spent way too much money on a pair of their tickets at some point in my life. Things sure have changed while I've been going to concerts.

It was about 1974. You could not turn on a radio without hearing something from Frampton Comes Alive.  This worked out well because he was quickly becoming a hero to me.  I even got a talkbox (talking guitar effect) because of him.  All of the sudden a huge concert was announced with Frampton as the headliner. It took place at Kennedy Stadium in Philthydelphia (since demolished to make way for more taxpayer bailouts of very rich sports teams).  My mind wanders so the rest of the folks on the bill escape me, except perhaps for Steve Miller and J Geils. A whole bunch of my friends went and the tickets were about twelve dollars.  Let me say that again: twelve dollars for an all day concert featuring the hottest artist with the best-selling live album of all time and three other hit groups.

So what does Live Nation want to tell me?  They want me to know about some upcoming concerts:

    • Brit Floyd: a Pink Floyd cover band. I distinctly remember specialty cover bands playing in shitty little bars. There are also Led Zeppelin and Genesis cover acts playing medium sized theaters for Big Buck ticket prices. If I'm not there by showtime, hold your breath.
    • Marilyn Manson: looks a little like a cross-dressing Hitler.
    • Lisa Lampanelli: Lisa is one of the funniest women I have ever performed with. We played at some little dive bar in Cover Your Ass, PA. We were in hysterics. Unfortunately she doesn't do that routine anymore and isn't near as funny.
    • Nickelback:  Give 'em back.
    • Foreigner: on tour without Lou Gramm, the singer on all of their hits. This actually worked out well for Judas Priest and Journey. No idea about Foreigner.
    • Artie Lange: a funny guy. Catch him before he OD's.

Nowhere on the list is there a single ticket price or city in which the venue is located.  That's ok - I don't need another mortgage to see subpar acts.

In other news, I work in a pretty cool place. When I say cool, I mean it in its figurative sense. In fact, it's so hot in there, it serves as a Germ Incubator. I'm terrified of getting typhoid due to the temperature and the seven people around me hacking up a lung.

I fear they got me, though. Between screaming at recent events and a new cough (that makes my underarms itch), I sound like a cross between Clint Eastwood and a toad.

    Do ya feel lucky, punk?
