How Much is Not Enough

Your love is like  television stew

'I'm an alcoholic taking regular doses of alcohol'

Ummmm..... isn't it terrible when Methadone fails?

But seriously, the man has a point.

"I'm an alcoholic. Every day I take a dose of alcohol, as prescribed. No more than a pint."

Today I identify as  a functional laptop

Well, it's Baby Time in the family, and with Baby Time, also comes Weird Religious Doings Time. Since I wasn't raised Catholic, or any of the multitude of Christian denominations, some of the things that happen are foreign and downright weird to me. But don't get upset; most religions are weird to me, like spending your time in front of the tv, watching reality shows. I have a friend who has been glued to the telly from the first episode of Survivor. People know not to call or talk to her when the show is on. Of course this is rather tempting to me, but I stopped after the first few months.

So there's a Christening coming up. When I think Christening, I see an Important Person swinging a bottle of champagne at a very large ship. This is child abuse. I can't imagine a religion that would tolerate breaking bottles over babies' heads. Even *I* know that their craniums aren't well-formed. Christening should be held up until the child is 18, when their skull is so thick, nothing will penetrate it. I also think children should wait til 18 to choose a religion (or lack of). It's much better than the parents forcing things - many forced things are rebelled against and dropped as soon as possible.

Which brings us to baptism. When I think baptism, I see adults frolicking in the ocean and being shoved under water by some dude in a gown. Why, I ask, do you want to drown babies? This religion stuff confounds me. It also gets me out of attending any of these events, which is a welcome side effect. I'm not sure when I stopped getting invites, but it might have been at the Catholic funeral of a family member. It was my first Catholic funeral, and likely my last. It started with asking why the guy waving about the smoker thing was trying to gas us out of the church. Then I noticed everybody lined up in size order, like Catholic school. We were interrupted getting into the reception by people picking cards up at a small table. "Look," I said, "The new Jesus trading cards! Collect the whole set. I'll trade you a Paul and a Luke for your Mary." Wife, who suffered a Catholic upbringing, wanted to be anywhere but within 27' of me. While that isn't much different today, she admits it was pretty funny. Oddly, my skin does not burn when I go near a church, the way it does when I go near an Apple store.

Fly By Night Car Loans, how can we help you?

I'd like to pay my bill but I can't get into the website.

Oh, that's terrible. Can I have your social security number, zip code, wife's bra size, and the temperature where we are located?

No.

Ok, have you tried our website?

The one I can't get into, which is why I called today?

Oh.

The error message was "Oops... something went wrong"  It was chock full of diagnostic information.

Oh, that's not your fault. That means we're doing something to the site or maintenance, or the web crew is on strike again for better catered lunches and hookers.

I see.

Would you like to try our mobile app?

No thanks, my phone would probably spit it out.

I'm sorry you're having a problem.

Me too. I've tried 2 browsers.

Have you emptied your cache?

It empties itself. Private mode is just like fiber - it all comes out.

Which version of Windows do you use?

None.

Do you have the latest Firefox?

Yes, it's even in Swahili!

Well geez, I'm sorry for your trouble. Are you sure you don't want to use our mobile app? I could change your user name.

How will changing my user name help me get into the site - is it blocked?

No. It's a nice mobile app. Let me keep you on hold between a minute and the end of the day, ok?

Sure. I dig the hold tune. It plays over and over and over and over again. I am going to put down the guitar and take up the sax, so I can properly play the song.

Thank you ......... Ok, I will transfer you over to the payment squad, where you can make a payment.

Bless you.

Hi, my name is Hennifer, like Hennifer Lopez. How can I make your day better?

[I wasn't expecting that]    Ummm... how about a blowjob?

I'm sorry, Sir, but we're not in the same state.

Are you sure? What's your home address? Social Security number? Do you have a gag reflex? [now that I have an adult blog, I might as well take advantage of it]

As I said, my name is Hennifer, like Hennifer Lopez, the famous butt. How can I help you with your banking today?

Yeah, they sent me over here to make a payment on the phone.

Oh. Let me send you to Internet Assistance.

I was just there.

No, you were at the other helpdesk, I'm going to switch you to our helpdesk.

Oh, in that case, send me right over [eyes rolling like a slot machine]

Before I send you over, is there anything else I can help you with?

Yes, you could help me make the payment the other helpdesk sent me over here for in the first place.

Uhhhhh.... yes, fabulous. Excellent. What is your account number? At what age did your wife lose her virginity? Ok, we'll schedule that for today.

Thank you, especially as we're on the phone today.

[on hold]   Oh, wow... instead of that awesome hold tune, I'm getting commercials for the bank! Maybe I'll put the sax away and look into voiceovers for banking commercials. I have a new life goal. I never thought the Universe would speak to me in this way.

[still on hold]   The (*$#ing hold music is so LOUD, but if I turn the phone down, I won't be able to hear the service representative. Maybe I should pick up the guitar again and play really loudly, so they'll get a taste of their own Hold Experience.

[on hold]   Are you calling to make a payment? You don't have to wait! Just go to our website and you can pay online!

If you were a real human I'd hurt you.

Hello, I am a technician. My name is Honnifer. Can I have the speed and number of pins in your cpu chip? And how fast is the memory? Not yours, the machine's memory. It's obvious your memory doesn't work anywhere near as fast. ....... Ok, super. How can I help you?

[Strangle your coworkers I spoke to already?] I can't log in.

I want you to clear your cache and cookies.

[exhale] They get cleaned each time I close a tab. The new tab is completely clean. It's like Invisible Mode.

Ohhhhhhhh. Invisible mode. That's the problem.

I'm certain it is. Three of the people I've talked to in the last hour asked me that question and didn't know it was a problem.

Yeah, if you don't have cookies, the site will try to register you as new every time you log in.

That won't be a problem; I can't log in. I want to see if I understand what you're telling me: If I don't keep your cookies forever, the site won't know who I am?

That's correct, Sir.

I know you didn't set the site up and I mean nothing personal when I tell you this is IDIOTIC. Millions of people all over the planet clean out their cookies.

Oh, I'm sorry; I asked if you cleaned out your cookies, when I meant to ask if you cleaned out your cookies. Again, I'm sorry. What was the error message?

Oops, something went wrong. An error overflowing with diagnostic information.

Ohhhh.... the old Oops message. [it was obviously not his first time hearing this]. Ok, I can't help you, but I'm going to make it all better by filling out The Form.

Does The Form fix the Oops message?

No, not really, Sir. I'll send the form over to the Department of Internet Bullshit and Making Things Up. They will have one of their TOP GUYS get on this damn near immediately. They'll diagnose and call you back directly.

Will I need a copy of The Form?

No, Sir, it's very secret and only the Department of Internet Bullshit and Making Things Up can use it. One time a secretary got a peek at the form and had to be hospitalized for 6 weeks. We're really tightening up our security at Fly by Night Car Loans. One of our TOP GUYS will call you in a few days. If not, one of their TOP SECRETARIES will call you. If not, at very least you'll hear from our TOP JANITORS. Or maybe not. Are you satisfied with the outcome of this call?

Honnifer, I am every bit as satisfied as I was before this call.

Thank you for calling Fly by Night Car Loans.

Thunderbird, the email client that runs on Windows, linux, android, and Timex watches, has announced a redo, in the next version. The first 'update' is a brand new look, for a brand new experience.

I dun said it before and I say it again: I don't want an experience. I want to read and send email. The same thing happened with mp3 audio players for android. They promise an experience and tout features like Material Design, which they claim is a good thing. Material Design was a plan to make android and its apps as ugly as humanly possible. They wanted to reinforce the concept by making all apps uniformly ugly. They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Do you have any idea what you have to do to get a simple black background on the phone? It involves a highwire act, where there are 10,000 people watching to see you fall and turn into a small splotch next to the pile of elephant shit.

  • Bruce Willis has dementia, per his family. He was diagnosed with aphasia last year, but it has progressed.
  • He will soon star in a new movie called Die What?

After a particularly trying day, the last next to fsck with me was my cable. After minimal troubleshooting, I discovered it was down. I really should have stopped there, but apparently I like pain. And what better way to inflict pain than to call the company that rhymes with Bombcast. Not only was my net connection down, but so was the tv, which is weird. So I went forth and dialed, which, as I said, was foolhardy, if not downright stupid. As their voice automation crazy-making system picked up, Wife came through with her phone. She likes to use her speaker, which tends to get so loud that she only talks on it in a different part of the house, so I don't start chasing her with heavy, sharp objects. It was so loud, I couldn't make out what Bombcast was saying. I politely asked Wife to SHUT THAT THING THE F OFF and she sat there to monitor my call. I like this, because it's sweet validation that I'm not going crazy; it's entirely the voice automation on the other end of the phone.

Right out of the chute, the automated voice asked me if I wanted to continue in Spanish. Nah, I was (almost) taught English all through school, so I opted for English. Ya know, if I were to vacation in France, I'd try to learn as much French as I could, to at least get by. I would not demand the entire country learn English just for my benefit. Oddly, immigrants to America have no such concept of learning the native language. Then it asked me for my zip code and told me they couldn't match it with any accounts. I'm horrible at math, but there have to be more than tens if not thousands of people in that zip code, who use either Bombcast or the company that rhymes with Vaginazon, so the fact they can't match it says more about their system than mine. Then they asked for the one piece of information that no one has: their account number. Be serious. I think they have a profanity filter, because I screamed HOW THE FSCK AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW MY ACCOUNT NUMBER? and it immediately asked for my phone number. At this point my brain is doing backflips, trying to remember which phone number I gave them. The moment I gave them the number, it immediately informed me that they were performing scheduled maintenance at the moment, and my service would return in 4 hours, thankyoubye. Gee, no one gave me the schedule.

It was at this point I looked over at Wife, who was aghast at the entire process to simply report an outage. There is nothing sweeter than validation. I guess the internet providers' theory is that making even stupid simple calls stupid difficult, they are discouraging further calls. They can save money by not hiring as many contractors in India or Kuala Lampur. I don't know if they're really in Kuala Lampur, but I just like saying it.  Wife tells me this is not an isolated incident, so I wonder what Bombcast will say if I pay for only the amount of time they were up. Plus a small inconvenience fee, and a large amount of state taxes and fees.

President Biden says balloon was not a major security breach

That was after Biden said it was a major security breach. In fact, Biden ordered it shot down. Days later, the Pentagon decided it should be shot down and went ahead. They told Joe that maybe if he was good, he could have a balloon ride!

Make your own decision: the thing was a spy balloon, with all sorts of antennas for listening in to whatever they captured. Was that a security breach? Will President Giveaway send $25 million to China because we shot down their balloon?

Microsoft defends sending user data to 3rd parties (Windows 11)

When Tom's Hardware contacted Microsoft, their spokesperson argued that flowing data is common in modern operating systems "to help them remain secure, up to date, and keep the system working as anticipated."

When caught, lie, obfuscate, and say things completely irrelevant to the topic.

I use a modern operating system that doesn't send data to 3rd parties. MS lies.

America is racing toward Canada's euthanasia free-for-all - as seven more states eye legalizing assisted suicide, deadly doses are prescribed for ANOREXICS and more nurses are inking prescriptions

Ok, coming from the UK, where it's illegal to offend somebody, this article seems a bit slanted. Just the title should establish this.

Let's bypass the hysteria and come to the crux of the biscuit: what kind of person thinks their government has control over their body? Huh? It's ridiculous. Remember one of our first rules: You Own You. The concept of suicide being illegal is laughable. You can do whatever you want with your body, provided it affects no others. You can pour more alcohol than Ted Kennedy drank for breakfast into yourself, but you cannot drive afterwards.  This introduces the concept of personal responsibility, which the legal industry has been trying to eradicate for a long time.

Please understand that I'm talking about a person with all their sandwiches in the picnic basket. You need to be clear and rational before you kill yourself. If you're horribly depressed and the voices are telling you to JUMP, that's no good. I appreciate the police, emergency and medical workers who do their best to help people in mental health crises.

The 'free-for-all' argument is the same one always trotted out: people will be not only falling from trees, they'll kill old people and babies. I could have said this before they did. Nothing new here. Imagine your state government voting to allow you sovereignty over your own body.  What have they been smoking? Have they voted to make it legal?

Practically speaking, if you're terminal, why shouldn't you leave on your schedule? Maybe before you're so sick, you're in hospice, counting down the hours. Why shouldn't this be your choice? Nothing wrong with medical professionals helping out. But the children....

And speaking of hospice, doctors are terrified to prescribe opioids for terminal patients in horrible pain, due to the Great Opioid Panic of 2020 (cont'd).

I try to be honest with my readers. I've been bitching about my very expensive piece of plastic called a laptop for a while now. Just so you know, we've narrowed it down to the inside. Inside the laptop - that's where the problem is. Pretty far inside, actually. If it had a hard drive, that's where the problem would be. I have these kinda stick-like thingies that act as hard drives. Only one of them is the problem. If I were to open the laptop so I could see both of them, I couldn't point at the errant bastard. I can tell from the outside though (go figure). It has something to do with grub. No, there are no grubs inside (at least there weren't last time I was in it); grub tells the computer how to boot. But grub is very picky about where it lives. It won't sit anywhere but the EFI. This is either at the very front of the drive or the last seat on the bus. According to the tech, grub rides the EFI and the EFI is always at the front of the bus... not the rear or the 2nd floor (in England). Before seeking Official Tech Support, I did research on the internet. It's a great concept: you can write about your problem and the solution so it will help others. Or you ask Ubuntu. So I spent hours and hours (and weeks) searching around. Each search provided agreements with the problem and a different solution that did not work. Lots of did not work. Personally I think the EFI is being a total bastard and only pretending it's there, to throw the rest of us off, including grub. At this rate, I'll have a working laptop just as all of the parts are no longer made. This is a great time to not throw things out, like old laptops. Mom said I was a pack rat. Now it turns out to be advantageous - HA!

I have a theory. No, really, I have one. And it's mine and belongs to me. If you spend a ridiculous amount of time working on something and not succeeding, you're on the wrong track. No point in spending another few weeks on it. I gave it to tech support, bless them.

Didja ever make half a dozen rescue flash drives and the computer won't recognize one?  It's the modern form of making a dozen boot CDs and none of them will boot.

Oh Atlanta

The city of Atlanta got hit with ransomware a few days back. FBI, Microsoft, and Cisco are investigating. Mayor Keisha Bottoms (good God, no!) announced that the breach had been ransomware.  There is no word on whether the ransom will be paid, as Mayor Bottoms (I'm going to keep typing this name for months) did not elaborate. As we all remember, if you keep good backups, you should be ok. And don't click on anything. Anything. Just don't.

  • It is with great surprise that I congratulate my area's snow removal personnel. Before the very large storm was over, the streets were clear. Including mine, which tends to be toward the back of the line. With a day or two of sun, there was precious little to shovel. Remember: shoveling is the major cause of heart attacks. Don't shovel.

Many many people marched over the weekend to protest the recent shootings. Or rather, they marched for gun control. Thousands and thousands of people marched against their own rights.

Now, the disclaimers:

* the marchers have every right to march - it's their First Amendment right, which I support wholeheartedly.
* what happened in Parkland (and every other location) was unconscionable. Beyond tragedy. My heart goes out to those left behind. There was no reason for any of it.
* is there really any surprise that the shooter had issues, after the police were called to the house approximately 30 times?
* the sheriff and other law enforcement people failed to enter the school while the shooting was in progress. Police response time was 20 minutes.
* had the school taught the kids about the Constitution, perhaps they'd think twice about leaving class to protest it. But we don't seem to have any investment in teaching our children anything useful. I continue to not use algebra.
* one of the marchers in New York was Sir Paul McCartney. I don't know what Sir Paul's country of residence is, but I am getting tired of being lectured by people outside the country, who do not understand our laws and Constitution. It's bad enough our own people don't understand. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only musician who isn't a liberal (or conservative).
* I don't want to lose one life, under any circumstances; child or adult. I truly wish I had a solution. Gutting the Second Amendment is not the answer.
* No word on the senseless tragedy from Atlanta's mayor, Keisha Bottoms (told you so).

In the past day, I discovered that permits were applied for two months in advance of the parade.

  • My friends at the Wall Street Journal (I lied - they don't return my calls) tell us that a Vanderbilt University researcher claims that hospital data breaches lead to patient deaths. 2100 patient deaths each year, according to the study. After a breach, quality of care goes down for some reason. This is a great article to read first thing. I love the smell of doom in the morning

The other day at the airport, beepers started going off. They were plentiful, and they were shrill.  Lots of serious-looking men in uniform, with guns, started arriving and waving these odd wallet-size devices around. They would emit their own screeching, varying in pitch. Eventually they located a woman and turned their beepers off. There are radiation sensors all over the place and the devices were portable detectors.  What triggered them? A woman who had a medical procedure involving low level radiation, five days prior.  I read about this happening at a border crossing a few years back, again from a prior medical procedure. Well, it's a good thing people aren't carrying dirty nukes through the airport, I guess. You can decide if your tax dollars are well-spent.

The Coworker Chats

Monday morning...
ME: I've got training today from 1-2 and tomorrow from 3-4.

Tuesday morning...
HIM: I'm a little confused. Do you have training today?
ME: Yes, 3-4.
HIM: ok, thank you. I got my handbook today. Did you?
ME: I didn't order the print version.
HIM: So you received the download?
ME: no.
HIM: you don't need the handbook?
ME: I haven't received it.
HIM:  but we all got an email from them, asking us which we wanted.
ME: Please do not talk to me in the morning. Or afternoon.

-----------------------------------------------------------

ME: that training on helpdesk I took was a mess
HIM: the service desk or ???
ME: one of us needs to take a remedial English class. Guess which? The other one of us needs to start drinking,.

My old boss suggested pills, "because drinking takes too long to get good at".

------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of old bosses, yesterday I flashed back to an old job. I was driving into work, when I got a call from my boss, who had gone missing for a week or two. He wanted me to be impressed because he admitted that he was an addict.

I pride myself on not overreacting to bizarre and sometimes tragic information, so I was able to drive while listening. I humored him (that's great, man, going away for 28 days?). He subsequently disappeared for another week, called to say hello, then disappeared completely.

Since that was the morning for phone calls, I got another, from a coworker. He got pulled over by the police, who found rather serious drugs, for some reason, and he was 'going away' for a bit.

So, aside from losing a substantial portion of our department, it was a pretty good day.

Epilogue:
I ran for boss. Coworker said he'd pray for me (he was serious). I became boss. Did good work. Drug Person went away for a while (we threw him a going away party). A year or two later, we were horrified to learn Boss died. Now I work for a place where gravity is more than a suggestion.

  • The Federal Trade Commission announced it is launching an investigation into Faceyspaces' data privacy practices. Where have these people been for the last ten years?
  • Rob Sherman is the deputy chief privacy officer at Faceyspaces, who said “We remain strongly committed to protecting people’s information. We appreciate the opportunity to answer questions the FTC may have.”
  • In other news, Faceyspaces has a deputy chief privacy officer.  I hear the NSA has a deputy chief privacy officer too. Can you imagine that job? The main task is checking to see that your salary was electronically deposited on time. Perhaps the two of them play golf. Tiddlywinks? A second career in porn?
  • Zuckerberg's take on your lack of privacy? You signed up for it.
  • Atlanta mayor Keisha Bottoms has not announced whether she will appoint a chief privacy officer for Atlanta. Judging by the ransomware attack, the answer is no (I could go all day with this).

Dan Schneider and Nickelodon have parted ways.
Opted to end their longtime partnership.
Agreed to not extend the current deal.
Pursue other opportunities and projects.

Dan is responsible for The Amanda Show, What I Like About You, Drake & Josh, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, Sam & Cat and more.

What this mealy-mouthed, extended litany of bull excrement translates to is: Hey Dan... the poop is hitting the whirling device's blades. The stories of your pedophilia are coming fast and furious. We cannot call you a pedophile, at least according to our legal department, so we'll agree to voluntarily separate.

Hollywood is a cesspool, although not the only industry we will hear from on this topic.

After thinking about this for a while, I finally remembered where I saw him.... he's Ricky from Better off Dead!

RIP David Ogden Steirs - Better off Dead (and M*A*S*H)

If you have not seen Better off Dead, stop what you're doing and find a copy. Rent or buy, if necessary. The movie stars a very young John Cusack, as the kind of guy that life likes to take a dump on every now and then. I cannot accurately describe it but it's hilarious and suitable for all ages (I think). If you have seen it, isn't it time to watch it again?

  • This fella found out what kind of information Faceyspaces had on him...

Just the facts: Bishop Amvrosios (real name Athanassios Lenis, of course) is about to be retried. He labelled gay people the "dregs of society".  What kind of people are they hiring over there? Should Catholics be happy that he's not a pedophile (not yet accused)? Maybe he's just mad about the gay orgy held near the Vatican, with male escorts and all the trimmings. Yeah, that's it.

A man near Seattle was arrested, suspected of sending suspicious packages to multiple military facilities in DC.  Police say his motive was not immediately clear, but [you know what's coming - sing along with lefty] there was no immediate connection to terrorism. And before you ask, I was nowhere near Seattle recently.

In unrelated news, a (non-elderly) man drove his car into the FBI building. In the moments after the crash, as they were hauling Muhammed bin Boom from his car, the FBI guys said that the crash had absolutely nothing to do with terrorism.

Today in Legal News

  • New York, which has thus far saved its citizens from the scourge of drinking too much soda, as well as from people who are smoking while walking, has proposed making it illegal for employees to access work-related email outside their regular work schedules.
  • Usually one must live in California to find this kind of outrageous silliness.

Something happens on the Supreme Court. Maybe it's the food. Maybe it's the atmosphere. Maybe stupid multiplies in proximity to other stupid, but in the interests of the country, someone had better find out.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been pictured falling asleep. She also said she would leave the country if Donald Trump got elected. And now former Justice John Paul Stevens says the recent demonstrators should demand a repeal of the Second Amendment.

I am not a legal scholar - far from it. I am hoping that Stevens is, but it's dubious. The Second Amendment was to protect ourselves from tyranny, locally and governmentally, yet he sees no more use for it.  Somebody's been drinking the Kool Aid, Justice Stevens. You should be ashamed.

It was inevitable, but this is pretty quick

  • In the news, yet another attractive high school teacher is up on charges, this time for performing repeated acts of oral sex upon an early teen boy. She will go to jail. The boy will get a wing of the school named after him, as well as straight A's and more pats on the back than all of the sports teams combined.
  • Today brings us the news that more nursing assistants have been arrested for sex with patients. This is the second bunch to be charged, out of an Iowa care facility.
  • I don't know what you think, but before they are sentenced, can we have a study on this particular healing modality? At very least, sex releases endorphins, which are the body's own painkillers. That alone should qualify as therapy, so long as they don't try to bill it to the insurance company. What is more uplifting than sex with a 20-something nursing assistant? Except sex with the 44 year old assistant, who knows a few tricks the 20-somethings don't.
  • The women were charged with sexual exploitation by counselor, therapist, or school employee.  Let's have a non-legal, non-medical, non-expert discussion of these charges. Sexual exploitation... let's ask the patients if they felt exploited. It's not like they were forced (unless they asked to be forced). The CNAs are not counselors, therapists, or school employees - there is no doubt or wiggle room there. Marshall the cocker could verify this.
  • Stop for a moment. Think about baseball. Now, let's ponder sex with patients... I fully expect Weird Stuff to happen in any industry. We'd hear about it from time to time. But this particular Weird Stuff has happened at one facility. Do they do STD testing of employees? Do they hire from the horny pool? Is there something about new employee orientation that sets them upon the patients? What kind of weirdness would cause this to happen at one site? Something in the water? Depression caused by living in Iowa?
  • If you, faithful readers, and I got together, we could solve many of the world's pressing problems. Meanwhile, I'm feeling ill. Perhaps a stay in Iowa would do me good.

Continuing the legal beat, a woman in Ohio was arrested for making lewd comments to the Easter bunny, while having her picture taken with it/him/her. Technically she was arrested for drunkenness, because, as we all know, it's not illegal to make lewd comments to the Easter bunny (unless you're in England and hurt Bunny's feelings).

  • In-N-Out Burger in California (you think we'd get this far without a California story?) is filing suit against a prankster pretending to be their CEO. The prankster is a YouTube video-maker, and the chain wants damages of more than $25,000. Because pranksters on YouTube make that kinda money.
  • In other news, employees of In-N-Out Burger in California have voted to keep a prankster claiming to be their CEO, as their CEO. An employee in their Van Nuys store said, on the condition of anonymity, "He's much nicer than the real CEO, so we're going with him."
  • "This kind of thing would never happen here," said Atlanta Mayor Keisha Bottoms.

Seriously, people, you need to get control of these drones. I'm not kidding when I say lives are at stake. Down There in New Zealand, a drone came so close to a plane that the crew worried it would get sucked into an engine. Although planes are designed to operate on one less engine, you don't want to test the theory, right? The Boeing 777-200 was coming in for landing.

In related news, New Zealand has planes? 777-200s?
Philly has planes too. And three-deep parking in the No Parking zone.
South Philly has double and triple parking in front of row homes. If you tell someone they cannot do that, they get up from their pasta and meatballs, come out their front door, and put a .45 right between your eyes.

  • The dog just barked at a trash truck. Not that I mind him defending us from trash trucks, but this is Dog Behavior. It always freaks me out when he does something normal dogs do. I'd expect that he'd be guarding his mommy, in bed, at this hour of the morning.

Back to the Parkland shooting for a moment... there was a drill on that day.
Just like 9-11 and countless others. Note to everyone: if there's a drill scheduled for anything, take the day off sane. Or sick.

  • I don't care how old you are; going from Bangkok to Phuket is funny.

Way back around 2000, I found an interesting online group, spending a lot of time chatting with them. I noticed some kind of common knowledge of an event, not related to the topic of the group. Finally I asked why it was a good idea not to be in New York around that time. And would I be in the path of whatever happened.... they indicated that I'd probably be ok but didn't know much more, other than a large, dangerous event.

Years later I recalled this and realized they were talking about 9-11-2001.

People and organizations are studying all sorts of odd things. At different places across the world, there are electronic coin-flippers, all connected to the internet. As we know, the odds of odd/even coming out on a coin toss is 50-50, more or less. The online flippers bear this out. Approximately a day before 9-11, they went widely out of pattern. Some people report dreams of burning buildings. Just information for you - do with it what you want.

lefty Does Office 2010

They say that talking about yourself in the third person is the first sign of insanity.
So be it.

I have one computer at home and work that runs Windows.  I use Outlook for corporate email and calendaring.  We are running all manner of Office versions at work.

There's something called the 80/20 rule, whereby 80% of the people use 20% of the functions of certain software.  For once, I am very clearly in the majority.  The air is strange up here.

Quite honestly, I was pretty happy with Office 2000.  I installed Office 2003 a while back, after seeing the horror that was Office 2007.  Again, I use basic calendaring, email, and word processing.  Over on the linux side, I use AbiWord and Thunderbird (both also available for Windows) and they handle all my needs.

I'm forced to migrate to a newer Office version and decided to go to 2010.  Some would call it upgrading.  I call it downgrading, as is frequently the case with Microsoft products.  The first thing I noticed is that the install took forever on my current HP desktop.  It sucked up all available resources, frequently refreshing the icons on the desktop.   And you know that when it was done, it required a reboot.  Linux doesn't.  When it rebooted, it still had more to do and kept me waiting a while before the ctl-alt-delete screen came up.  This screams bloatware right off the bat.

Standard behavior for most software is to upgrade the program's icons.  Instead, it deleted the old icons and failed to replace them.  Odd.

When I brought up Outlook, it did what all annoying software seems to do, which is maximize itself to take up an entire screen.  This is by no means restricted to Microsoft - it just annoys the hell out of me.

The part I was dreading most showed up immediately: the ribbon bar (or whatever it's called).  To my friends at Microsoft, this was a dunderheaded move.  I don't design software but you don't take things and hide them or move them around randomly, as you did with Office.  It simply confuses your user base.  A prime example of this is Windows 7.  I don't care what your studies say or your color preferences are, hiding stuff is bad (mkay???).

Fortunately you can hide the ribbon bar, but this is of only limited usefulness.  I kind of enjoy the tiny icon bars that are across the top of every piece of software I use on both platforms.  Huge icon bars are fine for Macs and the visually impaired but not for people who have to use Windows.  Is there a replacement ribbon bar or perhaps a way to go smaller?  [Research needed, lefty]

Trying to actually use the ribbon bar is another problem.  Too much there.  Not intuitive.  Too much looking around for things that have been hidden.  Again, not a smart idea, MS.

A quick look at Word echoes my Ribbon Rant.  Seems ok otherwise.

What I do like about Outlook is the ability to have more information available onscreen.  On earlier versions I used, calendar was always a separate screen.  Having it available with email makes it more useful, especially with larger and/or multiple screens.

One way to do away with ribbons (partially) is to customize the Quick Access bar.  It does not support all icons, though.

I have noticed a curious lag when typing in Outlook that was not there in 2003.
Bloated.

More as I find it...

UPDATE:  Excel 2010 keeps failing to respond randomly while working on spreadsheets.  I have Googled and tried safe mode, to no avail.  I have had it with this bloated, ribbon-strangled piece of... software.  I'm upgrading to Office 2003.
