Genghis Khan - Misunderstood?

Your love is like  the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor

Does this actually exist?

The Munsters - Original Motion picture soundtrack

What would you do with it if you had a copy?  (extra points for extreme violence)

Today I identify as  Mrs. Ghengis Khan

RIP Kirstie Alley (71) - cancer

If you haven't done so already, update Chrome. It's full of potential problems lately.

I gave in the other day and pulled up Google Earth. My ancestors are rolling in their graves.

It made sense of some backwards-ass directions someone gave me. But I did it on someone else's computer, so I didn't dirty mine.

Isn't it bad enough they gave them guns?

Gunfire at electrical grid kills power for 45,000 in North Carolina

Funny, just yesterday, the gunfire was at several stations. During a press conference, it was asked if this was the work of the Proud Boys (described as a right wing hate group), in protest of a drag show. Regardless of who it was, it could take a week to get power back. It was done intentionally, knowing the fallout. Regardless of the fact authorities don't know who did it, I'm sure they're certain it's not terrorism. The feds are involved now.

Now, let's drift from power grid outages due to gunfire to power grid outages due to crappy software, attached to the internet, with little to no thought given to security. This is a much larger problem, and the first place an enemy will hit during an attack. If you could cause serious electrical grid problems from your home in, let's say, China; why wouldn't you? Rest assured, it's all been probed.

It's Never Sunny in Philadelphia

Yes, we're back to THAT weather. I have to admit, the Hot Season was great; much sun!
Unfortunately we're now in the Cold Season. We only have 2 seasons, perhaps by state fiat - the way we like to do things here. WARNING: if you have Seasonal Affective Disorder, do NOT move to the Philly area, or many places east coast. It's flippin' miserable. In the Cold Season, the weather forecasters have it easy... it's either gray or gray with rain. They can forecast it with dice or darts, which may be the same way they do it any other time.

Let me give you a preview:

Monday: Mostly cloudy
Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, with some rain
Wednesday: Partially sunny (5 minutes) then mostly cloudy
Thursday: Thundershowers. Not just gray: very gray
Friday: Very cloudy. You won't be able to see your hand in front of your face
Weekend: 90% chance of clouds. 78% chance of rain, so you weekend warriors should stay inside. Unless you like this weather. hahahaha.

Here's one for everybody from germophobes to your average shopper:

I knew it was dangerous, but like every time danger is about, I run to it, head first.

Why? I had to get the laptop prepared to go to Outer Mongolia to be fixed. Somewhere they grow corn and blonde women, I forget.
Most of the prep consisted of removing the solid state hard drives. They literally slip in and out. Unfortunately, in order to get to them, you have to get past the cover of the laptop. This thing has screws in places you can't find, and if you don't get every single one of them, you're not getting in (like a virgin). They point in different directions, hide under the battery, and there's always one hiding in plain sight. This one looked like it was holding in a connector, but it wasn't. The manufacturer calls it the Decoy Screw<tm>. It's put there to foil the entry of people who don't belong inside a laptop. Like me.

In spite of the Decoy Screw and the 37 other normal screws, I somehow managed to get in. I was thinking I should get a gold star for my performance. After all, I've only been inside 3 times in 2 years. In actuality, I should have given up and shipped it with the hard drives in. Why do I remove the drives? Do you think I want people in Cornfed, Idaho to see my hamster pr0n? I'd either shut down the entire state or make it the capital of hamster pr0n. Don't forget - the state with the most pr0n going in is Utah, the religious state that the Mormons run.

Pulling the drives and putting the case back together was not a problem, until it was
What are you supposed to do with any repair over $100?
Find a nice clean space.  To do this, I'd have to leave the house. And the state.
Lay down white paper, in case anything drops.  You haven't seen my desk, have you?
Make sure the space is large enough to work in.   You haven't seen my desk, have you?
Handle tools carefully.   I screw with my shaky hand.
Put the screws back very carefully.   See, this is where it all goes to hell. I knew I had to do all these things and knew why I had to. I even knew why I didn't; because I'm a fool in a hurry and must think I'm invincible. So I put in the first screw, which promptly slipped and fell on the floor. This is precisely why I needed to be careful. If anything falls on the floor, forget it. Whether it's a tiny screw or a small truck, I'm not going to find it ever again. So I very carefully installed another screw, only shaking a little. And that screw promptly followed the first one, into the abyss of the floor. The funny thing was that I never saw it jump. I was watching closely the entire time: one minute holding the screw, and the next moment totally without a screw (like my sex life). I guess I should be happy that I didn't have extra parts this time.

Now I have to get it triple bubble-wrapped, in a box inside of a box, with all sorts of stickers and labels on it. I will have to do this at a store, because if Wife saw that much bubble-wrap, it would all be over that moment. I had to explain that if you pop every bubble, the wrap loses its protective properties, like a condom. Every now and then I buy a few feet and give it to her as a present. Hours of activity for the whole family. What a pair of cheap dates we are.

Shipping tip: do not bother putting FRAGILE stickers on a box. FRAGILE translates to 'throw me' in box handler-ese. You have to learn to think on your feet. Put LITHIUM ION BATTERY stickers on it. Everyone knows lithium ion batteries have a tendency to self-ignite. Your box will be handled with the care reserved for infants. This is the kind of information you get here at ThermionicEmissions.

Wow - there's a band called The Postal Service

All that's left to see is whether the USPS sues, because someone might not be able to tell the difference between a humongous incompetent mail force and a rock band.

More on Vagina-Scented Candles

The British are a Riot

Insipred by the riots in Hong Kong, the British have decided to take up rioting (on a limited basis, if that's ok).

They urge caution, so most will be protesting at home. Some of the more brave Britons will protest online. The bravest promise to leave their homes, slowly, but can't agree on a suitable venue to air their grievances. The riot had to be postponed four times, because of a series of meetings to figure out what their grievances ARE.

The novice rioters are urged to start with small steps, such as grumbling in public. The more intrepid rioters are going to get Really Serious, with a series of strongly worded emails. If you are leaving your house for the riot, practice in small increments: take two steps, say, "We just cannot have that sort of thing here," then run back inside. You will be ready for full revolt in only a few years' time.

The brave rioters staying home are urged to march in step with the people actually attending the riot (both of them). The riot will be televised, but you're out of luck if you haven't paid your licence fees.

The grievance committee also has to approve signs for the rioters. Suggestions thus far run the gamut from "Oi" to "Man United or Death!" to "I am strongly against this sort of thing." The political subcommittee has also approved "Fuck Trump" signs. Although there is no specific relevance, it has become fashionable to carry them. The Boris Balloon has been rejected because the Chinese are too busy rioting to complete it on time.

The largest hurdle facing the Brits is that they have to be taught how to riot. History shows they're not very good at it, unless there's an interruption in the flow of tea or Eastenders. When advised rioting includes things like not showering, being rude, and flouting authority, the grievance committee decided on a more nuanced approach: postponing the riot indefinitely and holding more meetings.

He did not drag the policeman under the car.  The policeman was not married for only 10 months. Foster wasn't even in the country on that date. In fact, he was on the moon on whatever date he allegedly killed someone. He couldn't have been there because he denies being born. This should be an interesting trial.

Doctor - Get Me a Sturgeon

The sturgeon has been on Earth for over 200,000 years.
Being the fine group we are, we've overfished ridiculously, requiring protection of the fish. Why? Their eggs are used for caviar and the fish tastes good.

We have a propensity to destroy stuff, routinely shooting ourselves in the foot, driving species to the brink of extinction. We're not a well species.

In cleaning out the Computer Room, I'm finding all sorts of stuff.
Way Back When, when I got the Stuff, it was incredibly handy.
Many years later, it's an episode of Hoarders gone entirely wrong. I found:
  • PCMCIA modems and network cards
  • RAM from laptops so old, they had built-in floppy drives
  • computer cables for police scanners I blew up a long time ago
  • several somewhat dessicated assistants and one intern skeleton
  • 2 HP printer/scanners that both failed when the scanner's physical drive failed
  • several batteries that worked much better when they didn't have that white stuff oozing out of them
  • an odd number of speakers
  • a box of 3.5" floppies - high density, of course
  • a pair of old tube radios that received what was the police band, way back, that I failed to fix. Because when I fail, I like to fail at least twice
  • if I look really hard, I'll find a 286 motherboard. I'm keeping it on purpose, for history's sake. Yeah, that's it.

The Great Milk War of 2018

A few days ago, someone(s) finished a large container of milk.
The person(s) who finished it is generally in charge of groceries.
The Department of Acquisitions is taking a bit of a break.
The Department of Acquisitions has asked The Department of the Couch to pick up milk on the way back from his weekly electroshock therapy appointment.
The problem with this is that by the time the electroshock therapy is done, The Department of the Couch can barely remember his name, no less drive home.

So The Republic of Our Place is without milk, which makes cereal way too interesting to eat. Ice Cream is great for breakfast but is also in short supply. We do have these wonderful brownie bites with cream cheese frosting, but we prefer to use them in moderation.
We're looking to establish The Department of Grocery Procurement, but we can't even get anybody to mow the lawn.

  • Every Christmas, we see sad stories about people stealing Christmas decorations. It tugs at our heartstrings. Well meaning people send replacement decorations.
  • Although the thieves are never caught, ThermionicEmissions managed to secure an interview with a decoration thief. His details have been altered and his voice made really squeaky to conceal his identity.
Mr. Thief; you are the man who steals Christmas decorations, upsetting neighbors and the children, correct?

Yes, that would be me.

Why do you do this? The world wants to know.

Not for the reason you think....I do it because they're f-ing tacky, ugly, and a huge source of light pollution. Have you ever seen those blowup football players and Winnie the Excrement on lawns? Complete with blowup generator noises at all hours of the night and morning?

So in your mind, you're doing the neighborhood a service.

Yes, I am. Yet everybody demonizes me. What's worse is when some bloody do-gooder replaces them, rendering my good works moot.

What is your suggestion to America, as regards Christmas decorations?

Put a few candle lights in your window and call it a day, you gaudy bastards. You don't have to outline each window in bright lights that blink and cause epileptic fits in innocent children. You use enough electricity to power a small third world country.

Now that you mention it, who among us hasn't wanted to throttle a neighbor who has made a neighborhood spectacle of their house?

The absolute worst is the ones with the most lights. They get on the news, which never has anything of value to show anyway, and people get in their cars and drive fifty miles to see the nice lights. Then they get upset when little Johnny starts to spasm and emit foam from his mouth.

Happy Holidays from ThermionicEmissions.

  • There's a little box up at the top of this blog, in which you can search it through the power of Google (perhaps because Google owns Blogspot). Every now and then I go to search something and it completely fails to provide an answer. To be absolutely certain it's not me, I ask it if there are any instances of the word "the" in all my blog entries. Nope.
  • I'm not all that surprised - after all, the spellchecker doesn't include internet, tv, blowjob, and any technical computer terms. It also doesn't learn, flagging 'internet' every time. It's all about quality control, here at ThermionicEmissions.

Seemingly because I have nothing better to do, I gathered a list of American cities with British origins:

Devon
Bristol
Carlisle
Chester
Boston
Reading
Croydon
Langley
Lincoln
Haverford
Newtown
North Wales
Camden
Ardsley
Margate
Cleveland
Abington

What's weird is that the majority of them are in southeastern Pennsylvania. Perhaps Pennsylvania was touched in its bad place by the British when it was little.

  • Heard on tv: We called the police to report the theft. The police were wonderful; they showed up in a few hours.

While cleaning, we came across a bunch of monoliths. You might not recognize the word, but you know what they are. A monolith is, like in 2001 A Space Odyssey, a humongous piece of something that just stands there. You're cleaning and suddenly come across a 1983 Camaro, parked in your living room.

I believe this happens at the quantum level, but what the hell do I know. What happens is that an object needs to be acted upon (the Camaro) and is put where you can see it (living room) so you can perform an action (change the oil). Life, having the nasty habit of getting in the way, precludes performing the action. Within a short period, on the order of two days, the object (the Camaro) becomes invisible. You may walk around it but it's no longer 'there'. There are only three things that will make the object visible: someone visiting (OMG -there's a CAMARO in our living room) or remembering the task associated with the object (OMG -wasn't I supposed to change the oil? Where did I put the car?). I mention remembering as a theoretical... it has never happened and never will. The third, and most likely, is that you are cleaning and come across it.

When you come across it, you probably don't remember why it's parked in the living room (HONEY - why is there a Camaro in the living room?), and other things start to become clear (I wondered why we had to buy a new car in '93).

So next time some Science Smartypants tries to lecture you on something he understands but you're obviously too stoopid to comprehend, you can expound on the Quantum Level Properties of the Monolith. All because you read ThermionicEmissions.

Smuggling Produce

There are prohibitions on taking produce from one state to the other. This also happens from country to country. It makes perfect sense; one invasive species could do untold damage to the local ecosystem. Did you know that California salami carries the risk of foot in mouth disease. Whenever I speak, I run the risk of foot in mouth disease.

A long long time ago, we visited California. My friends gave my wife something we had never seen - a blood orange. Wasn't I surprised when she whipped it out on the plane... I went white and explained the situation to her. Being an ex-Catholic, she was even more guilt-ridden. Fortunately the Fruit Police didn't profile us.

Unfortunately some different police did profile us. My luggage 'went missing' and we were told it would be delivered the next day. Perhaps my dirty clothes looked threatening when they were looking for something to steal in Baggage.

  • Somebody did something nasty at the NSA. Strangely enough, this wasn't done inside the NSA, by its employees. There was an event at the gate, resulting in three people being injured, one shot. The NSA was waiting for the FBI to get there. I guess they preferred making a phone call to putting an alert in the FBI's computers while they were 'monitoring' the FBI network.
  • Federal officials are trying to figure out what led to the incident. I'm no crime expert, but I'd say it was the vehicle trying to get past the gate.
  • The FBI said this is not terrorism. They don't know why it happened, but it isn't terrorism.

They checked their records and SETI 10,000 years ago said the same thing.

Google is about to start filtering ads in the Chrome browser.
The initially great-sounding announcement should be looked at, like everything else, with great skepticism. The 'standards' Google is using are somewhat arbitrary, using results from an ad coalition pf which Google is a part. The idea is to get people to turn off their ad blockers, because Google and others make a lot of money from them. Imagine being the 5,000lb gorilla who is able to do this.

How am I going to react?
Same as always: by not using Chrome, which phones home to Google anyway.
From Chrome derivatives: nothing. Keep the damn ad blockers on, regardless.
From any other browser: keep the damn ad blockers on.

  • Scientists warn that cleaning products are as bad for you as smoking 20 cigarettes a day.  I'm glad this was discovered and plan to do neither cleaning or smoking, so as to avoid this avenue to cancer.

Faceyspaces made things a little more safe by allowing two factor authentication. In English, this means that you log in with your password, then they send a text to your cell with a code to enter. Two factors are your password  and the code. This makes it more difficult to hijack your account (unless the thief knows your password and has your phone). Unfortunately Faceyspaces is spamming people's phones. They may or may not know this is happening.

Every day is another reason I regret for not using FB.

  • So how do those smart speakers work? Check out the link - very interesting information, in case you're curious or purchased one by mistake.
  • This technology is Future Stuff. It's wonderfully helpful. It can save you time and effort. It can control your entire house. If you can deal with the negative sides.

If you use Chrome browser, be aware that Google has decided it's the arbiter of what is and isn't an acceptable ad. It is a member of an ad coalition and will be blocking certain ads to discourage people from using ad-blockers, which cut into Google's profits.

I don't use Chrome, but there are a number of variants (Iron, Vivaldi, Opera, etc). I recommend running your ad-blocker and there's nothing more to be done. If you're looking for a good crap blocker, install uBlock Origin. This is also available for Firefox, and is lighter than others.

  • Everybody's favorite pontiff, Pope John Paul Jones, was hailed as a miracle when he took the gig. Lately, not so much. His calls for change have upset the powers that be in the Church. The fellow he put in charge of financial reform, Cardinal George Pell, had to take an unscheduled break to deal with historical sex offense charges in his native Australia. The commission for the protection of minors contained two abuse survivors, who resigned, stating lack of progress.
  • This man has so many people mad at him that he has been offered a secular position in the Trump White House.

I like to think America leads the world in so many things, so it's downright upsetting to see other countries outperforming us. A woman in England was arrested after leaving a nasty note on an ambulance, telling them she didn't care if the whole street collapsed; they needed to move the van because they had no right to be parked there.

This is unacceptable. To find someone so downright rude and entitled outside of the US is unimaginable.

Naturally, since this was England, she was arrested on suspicion of public order offenses. The ambulance company stressed that the arrest included verbal abuse they received, which is "completely unacceptable and must stop" There are unfortunately still a handful of narrow-minded individuals who consider leaving vile abusive notes acceptable."

While the article did mention the necessity for services to perform their duties, they seemed much more upset at the 'vile note'. I love England. If you picked up an illegal knife (longer than 3") and stabbed an entire hospital ward to death, you'd be politely taken into custody. If you stabbed an entire hospital ward to death, then made a statement disparaging Muslims, you'd be thrown the the ground, beaten, and put in jail for life. And yes, I'm exaggerating, ever so slightly.

Toxicity and Privilege Report

  • That bastion of top ten thinking, Yale University, now offers a course that teaches students 'counternarratives around whiteness'.  It explores such topics as “white imagination,” “white property” and “white speech.” Follow the link: my words cannot begin to describe the abject silliness of the theme. I think I feel my White Privilege rattling.
  • USA Today asks "Are boys 'broken'? Another mass shooting renews the debate on toxic masculinity".  Toxic masculinity? Who thinks this stuff up? Do they sit around in a room coming up with concepts that don't exist and putting them out as serious? Do they get paid? Do you notice that no one would dare say something like this about women?
  • If you leave this blog with one thing, besides a headache, remember that sociology is not necessary for understanding; take it for granted that it's bad to be white, toxic to be male, and if you're a white male, you should just be jailed before you do something Really Bad. So if this blog ever stops getting updated, either my wife has killed me and disposed of my body so well that no one will ever find it, or The PC Police have finally hauled me away to prison because I'm not thinking the correct way.

Taking it in stride, a spokesman for KFC said it was a good thing they weren't facing a shortage of Chicken-like Substance.

  • ThermionicEmissions is proud to announce its first comment to a blog post this year. Never mind that it was spam - it was nice to see it.

Philadelphia has announced it's going to stop Porch Pirates. For those of us un-hip enough to know, Porch Pirates follow delivery trucks around and steal boxes left on porches or steps. Furthermore, Philly will also be stopping bank robberies and illegal gun sales. With legislation. Some might say Philly is an unrealistically optimistic city. Others would say Philly is silly.

Philly will be having a very large suicide march shortly. They did not indicate whether they were trying to stop it or encourage it. The following week, Philly will be holding a dance-in for gun violence.

  • For all the women screaming about inequality, here's progress: Sacramento Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (allegedly) fired an employee for refusing to play "spin the bottle" with her, during a drunken party.  This is the second accusation for Garcia, who is on voluntary, unpaid leave. Never doubt yourself, ladies.. you can do anything a man can do.

Something odd happened today at work. I was waiting for some help from another department and I saw an attractive woman. Not just "work hot", she was pretty. This is a once a year (or more) occurrence. Someone told me about minority hires and here was the proof. Apparently we need to hire one attractive person for the entire corporation or hundreds of very good looking people will mill about, out front, with signs (that have spelling errors).

I figured this must be my lucky day, but it got better: she smiled and said hello.
I smiled and said hello, trying not to spit on her or say anything (more) stupid.
I can talk to almost any woman, just making observations or funny comments. But put an attractive woman in front of me who I might like to get to know better and I become a stuttering fool, with traces of blithering idiot. Fortunately I don't have to do that anymore, or my wife will get very angry.

An employee of this department came in, donned a wide grin, and said good morning to her. Then he saw me... and said hi.
I turned to her and asked if she noticed the difference in greetings. Like most people, she had no idea what I was talking about.
I explained, she laughed, and that was the extent of our interaction.
I give it three weeks until she gets transferred out of sight.

Due to the current 'opioid crisis', officials are turning to acupuncture for chronic  pain. Many insurances would not cover acupuncture as of a few years ago. Oh, the irony. You better watch out - the insurers might cover chiropractic soon...

  • Today's Best Headline: UberEATS driver charged with killing customer. Behold the new era of dog eat dog customer service. Sometimes it's a game to see who kills whom first. Extra points for eating the body.

The Louisville men's basketball team has to give up its 2013 national championship. All this because of allegations that a former staff member arranged for strippers and hookers at their dormitory. I don't know much about sports, but I do know you need to keep morale high. And what better way to keep morale up, so to speak, than strippers and hookers? This is patently unfair to the good men of the team. The results obviously showed, as they won the championship.  Coaches, recruiters, and professional teams should take notice of this finding.

  • "Kill the NRA" sign appears on a billboard.
  • Reminds me of a saying: the NRA is the only group that gets blamed for what none of its members do.

Using the Freedom of Information Act, people got hold of all sorts of tapes and documentation of an October 2017 UFO sighting, that launched F-15 fighters to intercept it. The UFO then became invisible to radar. While there is no conclusion and the UFO disappeared, the article is full of information relevant to the event.

This is not only notable for the documentation and process, but that there was any information released at all. Normally when researchers start investigating, the object 'did not appear on radar' and 'there is no documentation because there is no investigation.' I know NOTHING. I see NOTHING.

I again did battle with my arch nemesis: the vacuum. Vacuum tubes are pretty damn fun and they sound good, regardless of the few hundred volts required to operate them. Vacuum cleaners, however, have bedeviled me since I moved into the house.

My mom tells me that when I was little, I went to people's houses to visit and took apart their vacuums. I have no knowledge of this, but my mom isn't quite given to being this creative. I think I was just antisocial before the age of eight and there were no computers to play with.

All this apparently changed recently.
At one time there were two semi-adults with long hair, plus a cat and a dog. This produced enough hair to build several full size Hair Sheep on the carpets. No problem - I'll vacuum.

Nope.
Problem.

I'm not old enough to be a man who grumbles GET OFF MY LAWN and They Sure Don't Make Em Like They Used To (except for cars, which are way too damn small). However, I am forced to, by the performance of vacuums. There's a vague memory of childhood and an ugly blue vacuum that rolled on the floor, with a hose coming out of it. The voices are saying "Electrolux", so they're probably the ones who took apart the vacuums when I was little. You could drag this vacuum behind a car for twelve miles and it would come back into the house (hopefully not by itself) and do the same wonderful job it always had (provided you remembered to change the bag). Everybody had one like this and no one ever had any problems.. they just worked.

Now, as you'd expect, the machines are mostly upright and made out of plastic. They are available at all price points from $99 to $2,000, with Straight Sucking, Wind Tunnel, Cyclone, and Full Blown Tornado picking up options. The joke is on the buyers because none of them work any better than the others. The colors become more attractive as one spends more, plus they're rated in amps. Here's the marketing secret: amps denotes how much electricity the motor pulls from the wall socket. It has absolutely nothing to do with how well the vacuum sucks. One assumes that because the number is larger, the vacuum is better. Although it is possible, this is not the rating that is important.

So we bought a middle of the road vacuum. Which worked for two weeks, then choked. At this point, you have no choice but to become an expert in taking apart vacuums, diagnosing, and fixing them. Or buying a new one every few months.

The next few were cheap, and worked just as well as the others, sometimes better. Then caught fire and tried to burn the house down. One trembled and disintegrated. One tried to electrocute the cat. And all of them kept choking on hair. After a quick hair removal, I noticed huge grooves in the bar, for the hair to fall into and collect, until it failed to operate. Ever the helpful little bastard, I called the vacuum company and suggested they make the grooves much more narrow, so the hair wouldn't be tempted to collect. The lady thanked me and said she'd pass it on to the engineers. Unbeknownst to me, she did pass it on to the engineers, who had a wild party, with booze and hookers, and read all the stupid suggestions sent in by poor schmucks users of the vacuums. As one would expect, mine got the most laughter, and was second only to the suggestion that they design the vacuums to last more than a few months. Even the hookers laughed at that one.

Then there's the Oreck, featured in commercials, holding up a bowling ball. We purchased one, overjoyed by the bowling ball trick, knowing it would help us in this very difficult and solemn task. I turned it on, it ate up some pantyhose, and immediately broke. So much for Oreck.

I'm not disparaging all vacuums. Our current unit is a Shark. Or Badger. Or Cyclone. Or something. I must admit that this vacuum has held together frighteningly well. It would have to, as it has to pick up tons of debris and hair, plus survive becoming airborne when it pisses me off. Which is does often.

It really picks things up; the hallmark of a good vacuum. Or any vacuum, really. It's easy to empty, requires no bag, and hasn't met a pair of pantyhose yet that it didn't like. Except it chokes. Then I spend the next fifteen minutes on my knees, with a scalpel or boxcutters, freeing the beater from the hair, dirt, and small cars it has sucked up.

My wife is having none of this and blames it all on me. Of course, this could apply to anything in the house (or out of the house). She doesn't say YOU, but I know who she's talking to, when she gets mad and says no vacuum in the WORLD will pick up the mess from only vacuuming once a month. I resent this, as I vacuum every other month. Then she tells me one cannot simply vacuum, one must rake. My head is turning around like John Cleese in Fawlty Towers, looking for some sign of intelligence in a dark tunnel.

Wife pulls out this device I have never seen before in my life. It looks like a really beefy windshield wiper blade, but shorter and more businesslike. She proceeds to 'rake', picking up small bundles of gunk that frighten the cat because they're bigger than he is. Apparently I am supposed to go around the house, on my knees, raking the carpet before I vacuum.

I have to draw the line somewhere, and this looks like a really good place for it.

No.

I will not use two devices to clean rugs. God, or Charles Manson, gave us the vacuum to clean carpets completely, not requiring pre-treatment, like a rug shampooer.

The other day, the vacuum decided to pull a variation on not working whereby it moved the dirt around, but sucked just enough dirt to make it look like it might be working. I did not like this one bit, as I don't like to have to think on weekends, especially when it involves troubleshooting vacuums. Once again I got out the surgical kit and removed the detritus from the beater, creating a pile of hair I wish I could somehow attach to my head. Once again I resumed vacuuming and the vacuum resumed pushing the dirt around. It had temporarily outsmarted me and was laughing ever so slightly that I couldn't hear it if I didn't listen for it. The vacuum has a light at the bottom to tell you it's ok, or it's clogged, or perhaps I should really leave vacuuming to someone who doesn't have the patience of a very upset five year old. The light was green, which obviously meant something was wrong.

It finally hit me... it was clogged.
This vacuum has a lot of parts. Metal parts, plastic parts, body parts, and hoses. In fact, it has more hoses when taken apart than when assembled. I finally located the clog, forty feet into one hose. Have you ever tried to shine a flashlight through a forty foot hose to see if it's clogged? They go around corners, you know.

I got out my Johnny Home Colonoscopy Kit, which features that long, flexible hose they put up your butt to see if there's any bad stuff there, or just because they enjoy putting flexible hoses up your butt and getting paid large amounts in the process. After locating the clog, I convened a panel to discuss how to remove it, being in the forty foot hose. Pens were out, as were telescoping back scratchers, wombats (I didn't have any), and the cat (he's dead). So I did what every manly man does... I banged it on the floor in a manly way. I didn't have to listen at all to hear the vacuum openly mocking me.

One small rodent later, one end of the clog got loose. This time when I banged it on the floor, more came out. I held it to the light because I like making the same mistake several times. By then, the telescoping back scratcher worked, with the imitation hand on the end grabbing pieces of gunk. Twenty minutes later, the vacuum was completely free of obstructions, including my foot. The resultant mass on the carpet looked roughly like Whoopie Goldberg, only taller and less annoying.

Tired but energized from my first win, I started to vacuum.
And (I want my wife to read this) I did it without a rake, hoe, or shovel. It looks good. So I'll see you in a month or two.

And in the end, all there is to say is, "This vacuum sucks."
Or doesn't.

this entry passed the spellcheck with no hiccups. I wouldn't read it.

He's Not Writing About Sports Again, Is He?

Only a tiny bit, I promise.
It came to my attention, indirectly, that the Philadelphia Eagles won an important game. If you're from Philly, it's pronounced "Dem Iggles." I say indirectly because that's the only way I'd hear about it. I was in a mall or slaughterhouse somewhere and my phone started making noises, telling me my friends were in a group chat. It got really annoying, as any more than one DING does. They appeared to be commenting on a game. Since it's cold, it was probably Dem Iggles. I could see the straining through the phone. I suggested fiber. Apparently they won. My friends probably had to change their shorts after that. It took me quite a while to wash out the flying bits of animal that were intercepted by my clothes.

The whole thing reminded me of a lovely, happy celebration I saw once. It should be on a billboard that says "Welcome to Philadelphia".

I think she's a cheerleader

I told you it would only be a little bit.

I lied. Here's a little bit more: people are making dog masks and wearing them, in support of Dem Iggles. We are a nation of morons.

  • Fortunately for Hawaii, the incoming missile alert was false. Triggered by one mouse click, the entire state went into panic. While one click set it off, there was no Cancel click, so 30+ minutes of panic ensued until somebody figured it out. Is it remotely possible that the alert system is about as mature as Carrot Top? That no one knows where to go? That we need a $*#)ing incoming missile alert? grumble grumble grumble YAH.
  • The employee who clicked must be the most hated and horribly embarrassed person in 50 states. He was reassigned because it was a 'mistake'.
  • Remember the Good Old Days, when the missile threat was from Russia?
  • To give you an idea of how serious Hawaii is about security, they posted a serious looking picture of a serious looking man in front of serious looking computer equipment. It all looked pretty serious.. especially the password on the Post-it note, attached to a screen. It's apparent that we should just surrender now.

It's bloody snowing again. I flash back to winters where we barely saw snow [sigh]. True to form, our 'annoying dusting', which was to show up late tonight, managed to rear its ugly head at least twelve hours in advance. To be fair, the forecasters said eight. So they were damn near correct, especially for them.

But wait!!!!  It will snow tomorrow morning very early.  4-6" forecast, maybe 1-2", depending on day of the week and who you ask, and if their dice are rigged.

As soon as I started grumbling, I remembered a very early adopter of this (alleged) blog, who is completely friggin' buried under snow in Kentucky. Kentucky is prepared for snow only a little more than Hawaii. The drunken lawn tractor races have been postponed for a while, which is a shame, as this is the official sport of Kentucky. The KKK is deliriously happy, as it's white all around. They expect to have a highway cleared. At some point. The locals may be expected to clear streets themselves, which may require chains on their lawn tractors, and worst of all, being sober while running them. The local police have sprung into inaction, triggering heart attacks, because they thought it was raining cocaine. Can you imagine... 8+ inches of cocaine all over the place? People would be so stoned they couldn't move. Which may not be a bad thing for Kentucky.

The Kentucky Tourist Board says Come to Kentucky-it's a great place to rest.
Because you can't go anywhere
.

  • Indiana, free of snow (temporarily), is the site of yet another ransomware attack. Hancock Health got stung, forcing the entire crew to go back to pencil and paper. Employees under 25 had to go for training, as none could operate a pencil.
  • Hats off to Hancock, which got back up shortly after the infection. This is due to good backups. How did they get infected? The most likely culprit was some genius, who was 'forced' to click on a link. Ladies and gentlemen, there is no law that says you must click. Practice safe surfing. Remember the ThermionicEmissions motto: Just Don't Do It.

  • Perhaps it's my advanced age, but I'm flummoxed at the new trend of kids eating Tide laundry pods. Whatever happened to live frogs? As best I can tell, this stuff is not a part of the Recommended Daily Allowance of food, plus it would appear to be bad for you. If you're going to do it, don't be a sissy and just drink some radiator unclogger or Drano. Besides - everybody knows Tide with Bleach tastes better.
  • When I was a teen, we put M-80s in glass soda bottles (remember them?) and ran like hell. Good clean fun - not like these kids today.

Is your computer sluggish? Does it have a bad attitude? Do you wish it was faster? Get yourself a solid state drive (SSD). I use them and can attest to the speed boost. Buy the largest you can afford because data expands - especially porn. You can even buy a small one to put your operating system on, the your data on your existing drive. A larger one will allow you to just duplicate your existing drive - the SSD comes with directions. If the thought terrifies you or you fear reading, ask your local teenager or geek. Everybody knows a geek. They can be paid in money, Dunkin Donuts gift certificates, or sex.

  • Today's oxymoron: delicious vegetable lasagna.

The New York Times reports that the Pentagon has suggested countering cyberattacks with a nuclear response. That sounds like a perfectly normal response. I don't want to come off as any kind of expert on cyberattacks or nuclear retaliation, but I was wondering if maybe we could get some really hot cybersecurity people to harden the systems and some really hot hackers to put on the offense. The NSA has demonstrated that it has 'goodies' planted in foreign networks. Ah, now that I think about it, if we can't bill Lockheed for it, the Pentagon doesn't want to hear about it.  But using the nuclear option will certainly assure us that they won't do it again.

  • Apropos of nothing, Pornhub saw a 50% increase in traffic from Hawaii in minutes after the false alarm was rescinded. The internet (the world) runs on porn.

Today we ask the question "Is this the golden age of drag?"
Why we ask the question completely escapes me. Stay tuned for other escapeful questions.

  • New Jersey is a great place. It's a town where law and order rules the day If you don't believe me, ask the guy in Hackensack, who got a ticket for jaywalking, right after he got hit by a truck.

Whither Plumbing

Meanwhile, on this Martin Luther King holiday, I have tackled trash, drains, toilets, dishes, and occasionally, the dog.  I'm strangely pleased. Instead of a four page screed on Manual Labor being hispanic, I'm borderline tipsy with glee. Wait, make that joy.. glee is a little too gay for me.

For those of you keeping track of and guiltily enjoying some of my horror, we had a Plumbing Event a short while back. Let's say that we came to appreciate the little things in life, like a glass of water, flushing the toilet, and showering. After paying yet another ridiculous bill, allowing Roto Ranger to buy a new truck, we were allowed to shower again (whether we wanted to or not). New truck aside, I have only good things to say about Roto Ranger. Nice guys, great work, they left it much cleaner than they found it, and they were polite enough not to say anything after they saw Jimmy Hoffa's body, over in the corner.

A coupla days ago, someone flushed a toilet. This is a fairly normal occurrence, which normally gathers no notice. This time, however, the other toilet let out a house-shaking gurgling, as if Satan himself had taken residence in our pipes. As the toilet was still on its mount, I gingerly backed out of the bathroom, content to let the Dark One do whatever dark ones do in plumbing.

Unimpressed by my display of leaving him alone, Satan continued his work, by making the toilet overflow when I flushed it. I swore, when it was all over, I was going to bill him for all the Playboys and Vintage Guitar magazines that got ruined. Later, I was summoned to the torture chamber basement, where it was raining. Now it wasn't raining outside, so I used my Science Brain to deduce that it was only raining inside. This is why I get the Big Bucks. She had just showered, which must've had something to do with the rainfall (I told you I was good). She shouted out directions in the way only she can, which meant I only understood about half of what she said. This served only to annoy her, at which point I started to feel bad for Satan.

The rain seemed to be coming from a large diameter pipe that had the nerve not to be cloud-shaped. Fortunately for us, the water was coming down outside the pipe. Yes, it was still raining, but it wasn't from a burst pipe. In my life, it's always the little things.

Out of nowhere, I wondered if it had something to do with that little lever jigger that you use to keep the water from going down the drain if you want a bath. In a stunning display of bravery and confidence, my wife had removed it because it wouldn't shut all the way. Unfortunately, bravery didn't extend to putting the new one in. Apparently this way My Job, but I didn't know it until just that moment, in the basement rain. There was no transfer paperwork or customary thirty days' notice. The only problem was that I didn't see it come out and had no idea how it worked. I checked with the brand spanking new Master Plumber, who told me all I needed was to put back the screws. This went swimmingly, only causing a few trips up and down steps, and about thirty minutes of screaming at the parts. It still didn't work, which made the Master Plumber give up. A few adjustments later and I fixed it (he said proudly). If I were a real plumber, I would have charged her $550 for it, plus the off hours fee.

A day later, the basement sink got clogged. Satan had been a busy little bee. The Master Plumber got right on it, with her lotions and her potions, designed to blow a hole in the ... ummm... hole.  At that point, the Master Plumber handed things over to the Reluctant Apprentice and promptly retired, screaming about someone had better fix it or we'd have to take out a fourth mortgage to pay the real plumber. She was kind enough to leave me detailed instructions that only left out a few steps here and there. If you ever get bored, or get a clogged sink, pour baking soda on/in it, then some vinegar. It's like a mountain of an explosion that gets down there and cleans and shines your pipes to a mirror finish. One pot of boiling water and two plunges later, we were back in business.

I didn't expect or deserve a parade; it was my damn sink too. I told her maybe just a little kiss on the cheek and a high-pitched "You're my HERO!" Judging by the way she held the chainsaw in her hand, I was unlikely to get much of anything, except for bloody.

HALLELEUJAH, we had achieved pipes! Water flow. Dishes. Toilets flushing.
Just for fun I plunged a toilet, which flushed effortlessly.  The other one... well.. Satan was still in the house, making that horrible noise when the other toilet flushed. This time it sounded like an earthquake, with the toilet about to shoot across the room at any moment. Flying toilets are not in my job description, so I called the Plumbing Police and told them to bring a priest. He did his magic and blessed the place, stopping only long enough to ask if there were any good little children who wanted to be his special altar boys.

In other news, we're thinking of laying off the fiber.

)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Apparently I typed too quickly.

The Demons of Stupidity came back for another exciting round.
After working 2 jobs, I had to go food shopping because I was OUT OF COFFEE. You understand the implications of this.

Let's say never send a man to do a woman's job.

She shops, which is good. She physically couldn't, so I did.
She wrote out a list, assuming I knew what she was talking about and where everything was. See where this is going?

First item, special cheese. I had to call and ask what this was.
Call cell phone: goes right to voicemail. sigh.
Call house phone: all circuits are busy.
WHAT?
All circuits are busy. Since when? It's 2018 - why can't I complete a phone call?
Plugged earphones into phone, so I could listen to music. The cord tied itself around the phone and every other object it could find. This is when one or the other wasn't falling out of an ear. I see people using earphones every day. Do I need a class for special earphone users? Does the valedictorian get his picture taken with President Nixon?

Have you ever seen somebody go completely MENTAL in a supermarket?
It was all I could do not to scream bloody murder. My day apparently wasn't going as well as I hoped. My phone helped by readjusting the volume to 'protect' me. This is almost as welcome as my car DINGING at me repeatedly when I take off my seatbelt. Seatbelt: the thing that holds your dead body in the car after the crash. The thing that gets caught and keeps the door from closing.

I was finally going to get my lemon Snapple.
Oops, I was prematurely optimistic, as I tend to be premature in general. No lemon Snapple except for diet. People who drink Diet Snapple also drink 2% milk. They eat two hoagies and a diet Snapple, because they're worried about their weight.
I think the store just stopped carrying it and is just screwing with their customers, telling them it will be on the shelf tomorrow. I would definitely do that. This is one of the many reasons I don't work in retail. One of the others is that customers who annoyed me (most of them) kept mysteriously developing burns on random parts of their bodies. They never found out how it happened.

How about some chocolate milk from the list?
Good luck finding chocolate milk. There is a wall with four separate doors, full of milk. But no chocolate milk. Oh wait - how about some lactose-free chocolate milk? Ummmmm..... no. Hmmmm.... 2%?  No serious person drinks 2% chocolate milk. Hey, there's another cold section with actual chocolate milk. Of course there is. And it's not chocolate milk, it's some bizarre chocolate drink-like substance, probably with no actual chocolate in it. Meanwhile, the phone is continuing to help me by adjusting the volume of the music, sometimes in the middle of a song. I'm singing out of tune with a song only I can hear in my head. I was very busy shopping, but it had something to do with chopping off heads and general indiscriminate maiming. My eyeballs are spinning like a slot machine. People were fleeing the general vicinity. Little children were crying. And I could find bags of lemons but no actual loose lemons. I'm told it's inappropriate to hurl bags of lemons over your head like some kind of 'special' superhero. Lemon Man - Lemon Man can! Am I digressing? You bet your car's blown fuse that keeps the interior lights from coming on, I'm digressing.

There are certain facts that are helpful to know.
The most relevant one, aside from letting someone ELSE do the shopping, is that you cannot buy real chocolate milk - only 2%. It's apparently been this way for a while. All this time I've been protesting getting screwed by two political parties that aren't different from each other, when I could be protesting something important - who the hell says I can't have real full fat-engorged chocolate milk? Who is 'protecting' me from chocolate milk? 2% milk is for people who think 2% is going to make the tiniest bit of difference in their lives. Like drinking it is going to make you look like a Victoria's Secret model. "Oh, I drink 2%. You can keep your real milk."

At this point, seven people move their carts directly in front of the milk, as if choreographed. There was chocolate milk back there, but I'd have to go through all seven of them, grab the chocolate milk, then pay and run to the car, hoping they wouldn't call the police. The irony here is that the police were down the street, at the convenience store (no, not the Dunkin Donuts).

Once home, I put away some groceries, after it being noted that everything I purchased was wrong, and I look slightly to my left. Where both huge halves of the sink are completely full and backed up from Satan knows where. All over again.

The wife reminded me that murder stubbornly continues to be illegal.

My hard-earned, small, just for me bonus?
It's going to the plumber.
Sometimes they like to torture me by letting me touch the money first. I get actual money and can feel its crispness, smell the fresh glory of the green. If I were a dog, I could smell the drug residue on it, as most money has drug residue on it. I can imagine what I'll do with it. Then the sink backs up, the money leaps out of my pocket, and if I don't pay the home improvement salesmen, they're threatening to send more of them around, especially during dinner.

Epilogue:
The job took my entire bonus, plus another ten percent, for good luck. I saw things that people should never see.

Total Computer Destruction: The Meltdown of Spectre - URGENT

By now you have heard about the earthquake just south of Berkeley, California. This blog post has nothing to do with it, other than to wish residents well.

Just discovered are two majorly serious bugs with Intel CPUs. Since Intel isn't going to issue replacement CPUs (the main computer chip), fixes must be made in software(s). I'd be pissed too.

Warning: This is Major Shit

I'm not going into what exactly happened, whose fault it was (rhymes with Schwintel), and who discovered them. You don't care. I don't understand it. The important part is that it's being fixed, hopefully rapidly.

WINDOWS

You're in luck. Microsoft has issued a patch.
Whether or not you received the patch depends on your update settings. I believe the default is to download and apply patches automatically, so if you haven't changed that setting, you should be ok. If you have changed that setting, initiate "Looking for Patch" sequence (force it to update).

You may take a performance hit with this update. Tough luck.

WINDOWS SERVER

Microsoft patch is  out but your AV vendor has to set a special key.

Here's a powershell tool to check whether the system has been patched. If you don't know what powershell is, you never read this and I was never here.

Symantec Endpoint customers: if you install the MS patches you may experience BSODs currently. Do not manually push patch or make registry key for it, Engine update tomorrow to fix.

LINUX

Check for the patch.

MAC

There is a patch. I can't tell you much more than that. Check on Duckduckgo.com (instead of Google, which tracks you).

CHROME

Read this article for information on Chrome and Chromium browsers, as well as browsers built on Chrome.

Just for fun, here's the rest of today's exciting IT news...

There is simply no excuse not to be using a password manager. Do NOT have your browser remember your login and password. Do not write them on a sticky and put it under your keyboard, on in a little spiral notebook, or on a piece of paper push pinned to the noteboard in your kitchen.

Symantec has discovered Android malware that steals Uber credentials and covers it up with the use of deep links.

Fake android security tool on Google Play bombard users with ads and track location.

Hundreds of GPS location tracking services leave user data open to hackers. Trackmageddon (I did not make that up). Stop using location tracking.

247,000 DHS employees are affected by a data breach. These are the people and this is the infrastructure keeping us 'safe'.

In more social news....

Artificial intelligence pilot program will listen to social media for suicidal or self-harm thoughts. This comes from Canada, and is both interesting and frightening. This same technology will be used to monitor all sorts of information once it gets out. Marketers will love this to death.

Over in England, where things are getting weird(er), a person who named and shamed two rape victims was charged with two counts of publishing names of sexual assault victims and two counts of harassment. She was jailed and is now out on bail. Publishing names has been illegal since 2003 and is illegal in other countries too.

At times like these, I truly appreciate being an American, because we have a First Amendment. People in England are being penalized for saying words online. If you call someone a name, or heaven forbid, disparage their race or country of origin, that's also illegal. You simply may not offend anybody. It's creepy. This is also the country with one public spy camera per sixteen citizens. Although the US has a Fourth Amendment, cameras are starting to proliferate. Bad Things<tm> tend to get tested and established in Australia and England before they infect the rest of the world.

Offline, as if there is such a thing, finds police arresting people for public disturbance. Public Disturbance seems to encompass anything the policeman doesn't like at the moment, particularly cursing. We can all be glad that this is one of their most serious crimes. Also covered is being drunk, yelling, and calling the police names.

This is abhorrent to US citizens (but only if they find out because the Kardashians mention it or football players protest it).

We might not like what you say, but support your right to say it.

Now With Twice the Gluten of Normal Blogs!

Here comes the greatest morning news... the EU has launched a controversial deal with the US aimed at curbing government spying on the internet information of European citizens. Aside from the laughable content and enforcement of this deal, the EU has petitioned for more than US citizens get from their very own spy agency.

  • Here's a completely non-helpful hint from Thermionic: don't use Chrome-based browsers. They're absolute memory pigs. If you want confirmation, check your total available memory before you start the browser and a few hours later - you'll be shocked. I don't use Chrome because it's Google but apparently a few of the browsers I use are built on Chrome. After a few hours, they suck up ridiculous amounts of memory. Under linux, I'm speaking of Opera and an Opera spinoff called Vivaldi. Chrome, obviously, and Iron also.

BEWARE of Pokemon. Not only because it's stupid, but if you have a (God forbid) iDevice, you could be allowing the program full access, which it may take advantage of. Here's more information and a solution but make sure to do the research.

I first became aware of Pokemon Go online, where it took me a while to figure out (I'm not always the rapid-fire pundit you read here). It was described on the news as groups of people, staring at their phones, completely absorbed. In other words, completely indistinguishable from any other day and any other group of people.  My conclusion? Mow them down.

  • Speaking of apps, do you know what's at the top of the iDevice store ranking? An app to hack cars. Think about that when you get a new/used car.

Is your cell phone constantly running out of juice? It's the price you pay for a smartphone with a large, bright screen and Serious Cell Use, Get one of the gee-whiz external charger/batteries. You can find them at local stores or Amazon for a better deal. When your phone is about to go dead, plug it into the battery and it will continue working and charging simultaneously. They come in every size from tiny (with small charging capacity) to bricks. We use them here and are very satisfied.

  • Know what I hate?
  • Everything.

Marshall update: he's getting worse. We may have to medicate him (for grief over losing his cat). It's only a matter of time until we're all on the same medicine.

  • Disney has outlawed selfie sticks. Yes, folks, it's another step in my plan for World Domination.

We have become a very uncivilized society, partly because of barriers that we feel shield us from responsibility for what we say and do. When we're driving, we say and do things we'd never do when walking. When we're online, we say and do things we'd never do in-person. People are calling for executions of police, journalists and politicians. People are threatening society and promoting lawless behavior. We have to learn to use the system, regardless of perceived wrongs. Don't shoot police. Don't shoot each other. Don't shoot people pulled over unless necessary. Don't declare open season on police.

We gotta learn to live together.  I believe most people are decent and want peace and normalcy. Rallies and hugs and handshakes (and funerals) reinforce this. Unfortunately, rallies are not going to convince the bad element. How to deal with them? I have no idea, but at the rate things are escalating, it's going to involve bullets. None of us want to see that.

Looked at in the larger sense, this is Divide and Conquer. Trump vs Clinton. Black vs White. Meanwhile we're not coming together and we're no good when divided.

In the Sixties, it was protest songs. In the 2000s, it's Pokemon Go.

  • Check out this early review for Jeff Beck's latest album. I have only heard one track and I have to be honest - I don't like the female singer. Hopefully the rest of the release provides normal Jeff fare.

During the police shooting in Dallas, a robot was used to deliver a bomb, blowing up the shooter. Not sure I'm ok with this but just imagine what will happen when Obama ordered drones...
