NFFL.
The National Fantasy Football League.
I suppose it was inevitable, like fur on a monkeywrench.
It's probably been around for a long time - I'm well-insulated (read: ignore most things).

I remember discovering Fantasy Football [wayback music]. The musical comedy group was performing in yet another dingy bar, which thought it would be hip to have Comedy Night. This was a common infection in the 1990s. While watching the other comics, we noticed they weren't getting much traction (the audience wasn't paying attention). We fared a little better, but not much. Some well-meaning waitress explained it was Fantasy Football night.

HUH?

Fantasy Football.

Huh?

Jeez, I must've looked like one of their customers. Taking it on faith, I wondered why they would hold Fantasy Football night on the same night they're paying a lot of money for Comedy Night. It was then I saw the sign. I only saw the top half til then... it said

FANTASY FOOTBALL TONIGHT!!
$5 beer night
Live bait $2
also
COMEDY NIGHT - COME ON IN AND IGNORE YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL COMEDIANS FROM THE AREA. And they're local.

And that's how I learned about Fantasy Football. I remain incredulous after all these years. Sure, when we were in school, we put together Ultimate Bands, from our favorite musicians. This show lasted all of 5 minutes, then we graduated 5th grade.

Oh wait - now there's a National Fantasy Basketball League. I wonder if they're going to bring Fauci back to explain the spread of this.....

Giraffes, despite a relatively small brain, can handle statistics

Good, I need to hire one to balance my checkbook.
It's not just me, though. Google gave the giraffes some AI and hired 100 of them as managers and at C-level positions. Only 30% passed diversity training. How's that for stats?

The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, previously announced the launch of the Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion (SDDI) project at Open Source Summit. SDDI explores, evaluates, and promotes best practices from research and industry to increase diversity and inclusion in software engineering.

You know the 400' dinosaur has crunched the organization when there is a high-level position with the word 'diversity' in it. Thusly it applies to projects and 'inclusion'. GTFO. I dunno about you, but I'd hire the best person for the job; a killer programmer or whatever else I needed. I do not hire for gender, dancing ability, nose hair, or man buns. This stuff is a giant waste of time, that could better be spent on looking for the Best. My own people are virtue-signalling. And whining.

It was another Fun Laptop Day.
Laptop #1 half-booted, with an error I've never seen before.
Laptop #2 is working, for some unknown reason.
Oops, perhaps I was too quick with that proclamation. The keyboard isn't working.
I know - I'll plug an external keyboard in.
Annnnnnd nothing. No workie.
I know - I'll plug a second external keyboard in.
Annnnnnd nothing. No workie.
I know - I'll change USB ports.
Annnnnnd nothing. No workie.
I'll reboot. Maybe it's confused.
Oops, it won't start now.
Hey, the power cord detached itself from the power supply. That would explain some things.
However, nothing will explain why Laptop #2's keyboard still isn't working. I plugged in an external keyboard, just like last time. Except this time it worked.
I seem to have an 'effect' on electronics. Sometimes being Satan has its disadvantages.

Ban all gambling adverts, say more than half of Britons

For the benefit of American and other readers, I will translate British to English:

"We are a nation of people who do what the television tells us, especially the ads. We abandoned all personal responsibility years ago. Please take the bad stuff away so we can get back to overfeeding our pets and life insurance commercials."

Freddie Mercury: Queen star's friend Mary Austin to auction his personal treasures

She's 72 and wants to put her affairs in order. Some of the proceeds will go to charities.

It's been 30 years since Freddie left. 30 years. The movie, although somewhat sanitized, gave an interesting look into the private and professional sides of Freddie. By the end, you almost knew him, as well as his relationship with Mary.

Asking the Big Questions: Freddie influenced and entertained millions. He left behind his music and all of his worldly possessions. Was it a good life? If you were Freddie, would you say you had it all and when you left, you were happy? What were you most happy about? Your legacy? Your fulfilled life? An effect you had on one person?

In the end, a person you didn't know will own your house. Another will own your stage costumes. Is there a lesson here? The problem, as I see it, is that we don't hear from enough dead people to help us put things in perspective.

Nothing really matters. Anyone can see. Nothing really matters. Nothing really matters to me.

I am proud to announce the new Cisco Internet of Things Firewall. I was privileged to work with Cisco on the project, and brought my love for my technology with me. Here is a draft of the instructions

  1. plug in the Cisco and get the updates
  2. plug your IoT network into the jack labeled IoT
  3. plug the network you want to protect from IoT into the jack labeled LAN
  4. pull the power plug from the Cisco
You are now protected from all issues the IoT will bring to your network.

Cisco recommends the No Wire option, where the IoT jack isn't attached to anything, in case some ass plugs the Cisco back in.

Cisco and I are collaborating on the CLOUD Firewall. It works the same as the IoT Firewall, but says THE CLOUD on it. This will satisfy the CEO and his buddies because his network uses THE CLOUD.

In the pipeline is the AI Firewall, because THE CLOUD is last week's buzzword. The current buzzword is AI - Artificial Intelligence. All C-level executives must use the buzzword at least once in every sentence. lest they be though of as out of touch. Even the janitorial staff asks the CEO how the AI project is coming along, when the CEO goes to the men's room.

As sea levels rise, the East Coast is also sinking

Meh... I never liked New Jersey anyway

  • I'm enjoying my new phone from werk: the iDevice. No wait. I didn't say that. I'm enjoying that I only have to charge it weekly. I'm still not sure how to operate it, but that doesn't matter. I just have to answer it when it rings, which I can definitely manage. It's a piece of werk equipment, therefore I don't play with it. I use it for werk.
  • After not being able to get the last one to ring for a long time, someone made me aware of the mute switch, so I'm ahead on that one thing.
  • Unfortunately I'm not so lucky with Teams, which I have to use. It's like they put it together to purposely annoy the users. It has a special feature: the further up the chain the messenger, the less likely Teams will notify me of their message or text. So I get DING DING all day when my coworkers post something stupid about their nose piercings, but nothing when my boss asks me to do something. I've often thought Microsoft hates me almost as much as I hate it.

Speaking of Microsoft, in yet another bid to piss everyone off, they're discontinuing accessories and making them only for Surface. So if you like the $59.99 ergonomic keyboard, you can have it for $129. Don't forget the cameras and everything else. The ergo keyboards and mice are the only thing I like from Microsoft. Wankers.

IMGUR breaks the internet:

As of May 15, 'pornographic' or sexually explicit images are not allowed, with the existing images deleted.  In their stated effort to be diverse, they will be diverse to everyone except those with adult content. No 'hate speech' either. The Right must've whined again. Meanwhile, content from the beginning of Imgur will be deleted. This will delete content from Reddit and all the other social media sites.

I read a lot of Robert Heinlein growing up. Even science fiction dealt with the circular nature of societies. We don't want to go there. Personal responsibility has gone out the window. If there is something we don't like, we're free to ignore it. Delete or turn the page. Stop forcing your issues on the rest of us.

The body being 'dirty' came directly from religion, to keep us in line.

President Biden delivers remarks on “risks of artificial intelligence

To be fair, he said most of his is artificial and he could definitely use some more. Then he pledged $23 billion to AI research.

Today I identify as  another stupid mf-er who has very important things to say, so he has a blog, because naturally everyone else needs to hear the important things he emits.

Biden called on tech companies to ensure their products are safe before making them public

After the howling laughter stopped, the companies absolutely promised, swore, to make everything safe and good in the world.

Please, Robert, for the love of God, stop talking silly: stay home, and remain alive. You're of no use to anybody after a Magic Bullet<tm> hits you 7 times. Also avoid talking of ending war and never have an affair with Jill Biden.

"Designing Inclusive websites" - What a great concept!

Seriously?
As if I don't want to see as many people as possible coming to the blog?
Should I add stuff to be inclusive to traditionally underrepresented minorities?
Can I find the most offensive way possible to accomplish this? That would probably involve stereotypes. Everyone hates loves a good stereotype. It's one of the foundations of humor. It's also one of the foundations of SJW ire and apoplexy.

In order to avoid claims of discrimination, racism, religionism, and whatever else-ism, I'll just list some stuff that might help this blog to be more inclusive:
  1. bagpipes and skirts
  2. fried chicken and watermelon
  3. cash registers and matzoh
  4. homemade wine and stinky cheese, fighting at weddings
  5. ice, because the inventor died and took the recipe with him
  6. alcohol. Lots of alcohol. Many bars. Green beer
  7. tampons and "Fsck the Patriarchy" signs
  8. women not allowed to do things    (is that too broad?)
  9. lisping and FAB-u-lous clothes
  10. tea bags and Jug Ears

Rant Time!

The lady who allegedly murdered her child, put his body in a suitcase, and drove across the country is now in court. The lawyers are claiming she was insane. They're also claiming Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder. What a complete crock of excrement. There's a lot of expertise on DID at the Thermionic Mansion, as Mrs. lefty has it and lefty has been with Mrs. lefty for a long time. I can't wait for the psychiatric 'experts' to have their way with her. Of course we're wondering why DID has never reared its head before this moment. Also, having DID is not insanity. DID is caused by repeated, traumatic sexual abuse at a young age. It doesn't generally produce homicidal alters. It's harder than other psych diagnoses to fake, but not impossible.  We'll follow this with interest.

Ramadan and Passover raise tensions at Jerusalem holy site

Throw in Juneteenth and you might as well close down for the rest of the year.

The mad rush to AI is bringing all sorts of fun and applications to the masses. Unfortunately, the search companies using AI are red-faced at people using the AI for less than politically correct (as well as really nasty) means. So all search outlets needed to 'tweak' their AI so it didn't say anything 'bad.' As with anything 'bad,' it's going to depend on your definition of bad. We can all agree that child pornography is bad (and illegal), but we will not agree on what is funny. Heaven forbid we hurt anybody's feelings or say a 'bad word.' Also, don't take the AI output as 100% correct. There are many areas where it fails miserably and can even inject errors into a process. It will get better over time, as it is trained further. Lastly, AI and robotics will result in loss of jobs, at least for physical workers, like in (Amazon) factories.

SAD commentary

Many people are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is when the dark and gloom of winter makes you sad and depressed. I have developed Constant Affective Disorder, where the weather always makes me sad and depressed. It's actually the same thing, but I felt entitled to my own disorder.

America's COVID Response Was Based on Lies | Opinion

I have been saying since the outset that they have no clue what they're saying or doing. If you doubt me, just read their own words. So long as Big Pharma makes record profits, somebody wins. You know, except the people. These fools have lost people their livelihoods, closed businesses permanently, and driven the prices of everything up (especially food). It's patently ridiculous and many cannot afford it. Even if the "Supply Chain Issues" have stopped, food prices aren't going down.

The hullabaloo around TikTok gets louder every day.

In the larger sense, it's a security and privacy issue... it's owned by a Chinese company (as is the Opera browser).
Some squeaky wheels are framing it as data-stealing and demanding laws. On the surface, this sounds great-who doesn't want all this data collection stopped? Unfortunately, the reality is that the more we get government involved, the more problems we have. Government cannot be trusted here for two reasons:
  1. they will immediately be swayed by lobbyists with huge dollars to exempt them
  2. Congress has absolutely no idea how the internet works, no less the intricacies of data stealing. The only chance we'd have would be to let the Congresspersons see their own data out there, in the wild. This is how we got at least verbal action on illegal FBI data collection.
Government doesn't help you. The laws would be slanted and not beneficial. Think about this when people start to demand more laws, in any area. Europe has some interesting laws, which are causing major social media some grief, but America is not built that way. Our laws tend not to favor the people.

Johnny - What are You Putting in that Black Hole?

The SJW Squad is back (like they ever left) and they're pissed (like they're ever not pissed). One of them opened a science book, purely by mistake, and discovered astronomy. As soon as she found out about black holes, her head exploded and sent out the SJW Alert<tm>. They demand all science stop until a more appropriate name is found for the umm... space thingies. When NASA explained to them that they are holes and they are black, NASA was dismissed as 'a tool of the patriarchy.'

Ever in service, even to the SJWs, I tried to think of some alternate names for Black Holes
  • dark holes   (that's doomed)
  • Gravity-Enhanced Super Vacuum  (GESV)
  • really really big Hoover
  • gravity sucking devices   (GSD)
  • hole that sucks
  • white hole

We're on a home improvement binge lately.
When I say we're on a home improvement binge, I mean we're still desperately searching for someone to mow the lawn.
But it gets better... we're also looking to clean the house. If you live near me, that would explain the line of construction, industrial cleaning equipment and trucks stretching down the block.

Growing up, each family member had their thing, with regards to cleaning.
  • Mom was just one generation off from scrubbing the bathroom tile with a toothbrush. Everything was always presentable. A pair of shoes on the steps for more than two hours would change the basic atmosphere of the house.
  • The brother was messy but not nuclear sewage messy. But his room had the propensity to behave like a giant black hole, sucking in everything around it. If you were missing something, it was probably under his bed. There was also a large variety of rolling papers and men's magazines. To this day, nobody asks.
  • Then there was me. Suffice it to say that everything I touched turned to clutter, and no amount of cleaning would make it look any less than post-tornado. Sometimes after I cleaned, it looked worse. This led to all sorts of interesting conversations with Mom. At least I had the sense to hide my hamster pr0n. I was also in charge of the basement, which came to be known as lefty's Basement to those outside the house. It became a universal joke: Hey - that place is a mess. It looks like lefty's basement.
Fast forward to living on my own. I paid the bills, so only I could yell at me for the clutter.  My brother, who lived with me for a bit, suddenly changed places with me. Suffice it to say he kept his bedroom door unlocked, because everyone was terrified of what they might encounter upon entering.

Bro left and I inherited all the Bad Genes<tm>. Then I met someone who could only remember things that were right there in her sight, so everything had to be within her sight. She developed a shoe collection that threatened to take over the house, as well as build a space elevator. It turned out some of them were good for the terrain on the Moon.

Bob's Cleanomatic was the first cleaner we spoke to. Bob himself came by to give us an idea of what was involved and an estimate. We left while Bob was performing Estimating Activities and came back to a street full of police cars and an ambulance. Bob had hung himself. Before the estimate. Possibly because of the esitmate. Those who knew him stated that he had no suicidal thoughts and was never depressed.

We called Naughty Maids (at my insistence). 'Bridgette' stopped by to look at things. She showed up in her French maid outfit, looked around, and said her girls could wear the French maid outfits, but they would be covered up by Level 3 Contaminant HAZMAT suits. Thwarted yet again, we continued looking.

How could the cluttered become the radioactive?

The final candidate was weird. Yes, you're asking yourself how could a cleaning service be more weird than the job they were taking? We pride ourselves on our weirdness, most of which was not intentional. Stuff just rearranges itself on no particular schedule. Historical Cleaning Services is a business where the cleaners show up in historical costumes. You could have Joan of Arc running the vacuum and Ben Franklin doing the bedrooms. I liked the idea of Ben being involved because I had a few things I needed to talk to him about. Only later did I discover it wasn't the real Ben Franklin. This resulted in years of intensive therapy. I couldn't trust anyone for a large period of my life. Historical cleaning would not have worked out. The neighbors complained about the ambulances clogging the street. It turns out the historical figures were all engaged in self-harm. Instead of cleaning, there were blood stains. We received a small settlement.

Months later we came to the sad realization that cleaning services weren't going to be do-able and there were too many permits involved. It looked like we'd have to [shudder] clean our own house

  • Our Diversity Officer at work has still not recognized the left handed. This is pure discrimination, of the worst variety. I guess we won't get our due until we fill out the paperwork to become a race.

There was no flavored coffee creamer at the store.
This is passing the point of ridiculous. A man's coffee is the most important thing in the morning (unless he gets morning oral sex). If he is forced to use [ACK!] powdered creamer, the day isn't likely to get off to the same kind of start. Powdered creamer can, however, be tolerated if it is preceded by the aforementioned oro-genital recreation. Let's all get the coffee and condiments together so we don't have to face this kind of dilemma. To the great teleworking force, this is more important than gas prices.

Speaking of gas prices, when they went to about $3.99 here, this was about the time people started freaking out and even contacting their congresspersons. Congresspersons don't have any control over gas prices, but they felt they had to do something, especially in light of the just-released profit statements from the oil companies. The prices miraculously fell, and the people celebrated. Then, when the people turned around to tell little Johnny so SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP in your carseat, the prices went back up, higher than before.

Think...

Stuff happens. Life goes on. You're left with a huge hole because someone moved, disconnected, or took leave of the planet. Do you want to talk to this person? What would you say to them? What do you say to someone who died? Would it make a difference? We here at ThermionicEmissions think the concept of closure is complete excrement.

When I found out our aged neighbor died in the hospital from the Flying AIDS, my first thought was that we didn't even get a chance to say goodbye. Then I thought about what we would have said... See ya next time? I hope you find your beliefs were spot on? The dog misses you?

Hi, Dad, sorry to drag you away from whatever it is you were doing, but... ummm...

Friend.. we were so close. Never mind that we drifted away... can we reconnect?

I'm awful sorry I told you that you looked like a dump truck in that dress.

  • Cars in driver-assist mode hit a third of cyclists, all oncoming cars in tests
  • that's a pretty good start! Do not let it be said that America doesn't have the brains and can-do attitude.
  • Told you so. The technology is Not Ready for Prime Time, yet it has been released and is all over some cities, coming soon to highways via trucks.

Like other primaries, the Philly gubernatorial primary went off the other night.
First place by a slim margin was Dr. Oz, by a nose hair, as endorsed by Trump. It's only fitting a tv show host endorse another tv show host. At least Trump was entertaining; not so much Oz. Oz may not live in Pennsylvania, but that never stopped anybody from running for anything.

On the democrat side, they continued their 'he's breathing, right?' style of nomination, when Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman won, two days after announcing he had suffered a stroke. President Biden is presiding over the efforts to change the democratic slogan to "We might be impaired, but..... at least we're impaired."

After the hard slogan work was done, Biden demanded a lollipop.

  • Post Malone we listened to music

Our polling place changed.
I didn't want to think there was a conspiracy, but when we went to our polling place that had been there for more years than several of our dogs, it was no longer there. I believe this is a desperate tactic on the part of one party or the other, to keep us home and not voting.

And I find myself deluged with republican spam. This is different from the more frequent democratic spam. At least the republicans only send a few, and they don't send them to a wrong name.  Regardless, when anyone asks if they can count on me to vote with them, I tell them the moment they vote libertarian, then block the number. It's the only thing I can do that makes me feel like I got a tiny amount of revenge. Don't forget: when politicians created anti-spam laws, they exempted themselves.

When people start a hobby or job, they 'cut their teeth' on their first few opportunities. I don't know about you, but I don't wanna cut my teeth on anything. My dentist bills could buy me a McMansion, whatever that is.

Today at the Talledega 500, 495 mechanics quit, citing electric cars. Apparently the mechanics no longer smell like gasoline, and as a result, don't get the chicks anymore. News at 11.

Anybody in the IT field knows the latest industry buzzword: AI - artificial intelligence. It's what ate humanity in the Terminator series, when it became self-aware and decided the humans must go. Some argue this was a very sensible decision. So AI will definitely be reaching out to consumers in many forms, none self-aware (hopefully). I don't know about you, but I can think of a few ways this could actually be helpful to me....
  • standing there, nodding its head when [SPOUSE] speaks
  • deleting not only spam, but stuff that bugs you (like everything at work)
  • reminding you where you left your car keys. and phone. and condoms.
  • sending [SPOUSE] flowers and gifts from you on unimportant days like anniversary and birthday
  • taking [SPOUSE] shopping when The Big Game is on
  • taking the dog out for a trot or to perform excretial activities
  • speaking of the dog, she came in last night and bought Wife a present: a dead baby bird. A belated mother's day present, no doubt.

Buffalo shooting: Parents of injured victim demand political action

Welcome to another edition of Reality Court. On today's show, we take a look at demands post-mass shooting. These events are horrible, and affect many. Let's address the demand: WHAT. WILL. HELP?  The answer is, of course, nothing. You cannot legislate this away, any more than Johnny Depp can marry an ugly chick and get a job as a barista.

What might happen is that politicians will feel the volume and need to be seen to do something, impotent as it would be. They will pass a new law forbidding mass shootings - will that satisfy the demands?

Pentagon opens up about its database of 400 smudges that may or may not be UFOs
'We're open to all hypotheses, we're open to any conclusions' says official

(provided they don't contain the word 'alien')

Smudges... heh heh...
Don't forget swamp gas, ducks in formation, oil rigs, lenticular clouds, particular clouds, mass hallucination, and whatever else they could dig up that day.   No, seriously, smudges? There are over 400 pictures with smudges? That's a lot of smudges. If there are that many smudges, how many non-smudged pictures exist?

It's safe to say that if the government is talking about any part of UFO disclosure, they're lying or it's part of a PSYOP. Their track record since at least the 1940s speaks for itself.

Congress' $770bn National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2022 calls for the creation of a permanent federal office within the Department of Defense to investigate and report on UAPs.

Yes, more useless bloat in a government that seems to grow weekly. All UFO information is held somewhere at present. If really interested in disclosure, they could just release that information. This department is at least redundant, and at most a complete diversion.

At Least I Pooped Today...

You know you're living with PTSD when....
There's only 2 of you, but you have the 48 pack of toilet paper.

Your love is like  your mother's.

The goog is starting to take security more seriously. So seriously, I can't get into my own gmail with my own phone. I used to... but it suddenly told me that someone used my password to try to access my mail. Yes, of course someone did - it was ME. Apparently I've done such a good job of disguising my phone, the goog doesn't recognize it.

Sometimes a time machine would be fun.
Can you imagine going back to visit Ben Franklin, noted bright guy, inventor, and ladies' man, with an android tablet. With transexual videos. Ask him what he thinks about SJWs. Or forward 100 years, to watch people just shake their heads in silence, looking back at our time in history.

AI, the Buzzword for the next 10 years, is moving forward by leaps and bounds. You probably don't know this, but you've seen AI for years. It's a very early and flawed implementation, but sourced reveal it's Larry King.  Larry's been dead for 10 years, and what you're seeing is an AI likeness, complete with wheezing, coughing, and heart arrhythmia.

To the science-minded and anyone concerned: sperm swim more like otters than eels.

Libertarian candidate for president, Jo Jorgensen, has to get 5,000 signatures to get on the ballot in the hole that is PA. Republicans and democrats require 2,000.

Dear lefty:

  • To what do you attribute the serious rise in global readership?
  • Bad taste knows no boundaries.

What do you do when you drop to earth in a space capsule, and have 5 hours to kill until the ship comes for you? You use your satellite phone to make prank calls. This is why America is the greatest nation on Earth.

The NSA recommends privacy-conscious turn off find-my-phone, wifi, and Bluetooth whenever not using them.  HA. The NSA is finally taking my advice.

They turned me loose today. Or I escaped... however you'd like to phrase it.
What did we learn today?
First, we learned that the Flying AIDS is keeping people inside. Where there should be stopped traffic, there was no traffic.

We learned that someone needs to give some serious thought to dog-proofing the car. And the GPS. Especially the GPS.

Our original GPS and I had a very bad relationship, like the mower. The touch screen caused an incredible amount of grief, and not just with me. After it tried to drive us into a large body of water, we gave up. It would say things like, "Turn 500 feet at .. Road." I suspect it had better things to do than give us directions.

When the new one showed up, I started getting douche chills and asked Mrs lefty if she was deliberately trying to torture me. She said not at all, but she said it too quickly and I thought I saw a twinkle in her eye. There was no need to plug it into a computer to have it run, which was good. The screen went from the horrid push screen to a touch screen, and behaved pretty well. It only screwed up about 10 times for me, which was a great improvement over the old one. Unfortunately the device is not dog-proof. We kept trying to figure out why the device was on a screen we had never seen. It was Penny, touching it with her nose. Repeatedly. Cars used to come with bench seats, like your couch. This left much room for a 3rd passenger or a dog. The tiny individual seats are no place for canines. Penny is happy to try to get past this by sneaking up from the back, sitting on my lap, scratching the crap out of my legs, and trying to stick her head out the window. As for the car being dog-proof, Penny either knows how to open the window or keeps hitting it by mistake. We have to literally lock the window controls so she doesn't open the windows. It's pretty funny to watch her flaps flapping in the breeze, but we like to err on the side of caution. One squirrel and it might be over.

We were in outer Mongolia, visiting. You see different things in outer Mongolia. For instance, we watched a chipmunk walk up to someone and take a peanut. That was amusing, but I didn't expect to see a young bear, popping by, eating some food, then putting his paws on the railing, looking for more. He was just fine with people; mainly looking for more to eat. I saw pictures of the Three Little Bears, playing in the tree, with their momma watching. Next to the porch. If there's one thing you don't piss off, it's Trump. If there's another thing you don't piss off, it's a momma bear. There was also a video of the little ones, trying to figure out what to do with a marshmallow. Discovering it wasn't much of a toy, they did what all children do: stick it in their mouth. I get in trouble for sticking things in my mouth to this day. The local authorities say that it's ok to feed the animals. Ok, then. It's pretty cool to look at bears. At about a mile away, or in those nice postcards. Having to change your underwear frequently is tiring. Penny went nuts, less so for the bear than the chipmunks. She stood guard the entire time. We felt secure in the knowledge we were going to go unmolested by chipmunks. This is one serious hunting dog (when she's not anchored to her mommy, napping). Hospitality is the same everywhere, which I realized when our host provided us with vodka bottles and straws. These were the good straws, not the kind that collapse. Although it would've made the trip more interesting, we declined, hoping for Drano instead.

It was great to get back home to my couch, where there was no danger of bears, except on the tv. Aside from discovering the new GPS added an hour to our trip, the ride home was fine. This is much better than last time, when we drove through a hurricane. We saw flying tree branches, trees, small houses, trucks, and bicycles with Nancy Pelosi riding them.

Always late to the party, I discovered you can't pay a turnpike toll: it's all billed to you. Hmmmm.... that would be pretty convenient if EZ PASS wasn't working to remove cash, tracking, and toll takers. Watch the alleged coin shortage get blamed for cutting off other cash transactions. As it is, some stores say you need exact change or you have to use a card. I'm starting to vibrate (harder).

Battleships Confide in Me and Tell Me Where You Are

Don't blame me... it's a Yes lyric, from Yours is no Disgrace.

  • I hate like hell to do this, but I try to be helpful... you can still downgrade to Win 10. Here's the method. No idea how long this will last.
  • If you've decided to join the stampede to a different operating system, ANY operating system, there's always MAC and linux. Neither has a huge learning curve, they're both more stable, they're not advertising platforms, and no one spies on you (that's an assumption with MAC). You can try linux out without altering your system in any way, using a USB stick. You can also dual-boot Win and lin. Ask if you have questions or need tips.

Since I'm ranting anyway, and since I'm a glutton for punishment, we went out for breakfast the other day. Things have been much better since the days when my order would be forgotten or messed up. No one asks me to sit at a different table so their order will come out. We went to Ihop. There's an Ihop right around the corner, so we drive to the one 20 minutes away. The local one has incompetent waitresses and clientele better suited for a schoolyard, except for the guns (I hope).

I figured 2pm was good for breakfast, plus it wouldn't be crowded.
I was wrong.
Apparently church lets out and most of the parishioners go to Ihop after. That's ok, at least they're well-behaved (and color-coordinated).
SURPRISE! We got seated next to a child who was being LOUD.
When I say seated next to, I mean 3' away. The only way I could've been closer to him was to be seated at his table. He continued to explode into fits of Loud, at odd intervals, causing the other rug rats at the table to sound off too. He looked old enough to know better. I did hear his mom explain this was not acceptable (her words), but the child apparently thought it was perfectly acceptable. I would never hurt a child, so I suggested slapping the parents. We had made the cardinal mistake of eating out: eating out. We had also forgotten to ask for the No Screaming Children Section. The waitress heartily agreed. And you know, for a fact, that this little noisemaker was at the table for the entirety of our meal, until 5 minutes before we left.

I don't want to be That Guy<tm>, or sound like some cantankerous Old Dude<tm>, who eats dinner at 4pm and complains about everything. We don't eat out a lot, so it would be nice not to be disturbed when we do. The last time it was a screaming infant all the way across the restaurant (aspiring opera diva), plus 4 extremely chatty, very annoying early teens, who all talked at the same time, even when their table threatened to disintegrate from the noise and vibration produced by their flapping lips. Mrs lefty is trying to calm me down, so I didn't make an even larger spectacle, like last time, when I got hold of the soda hoses and sprayed down the entire noisemaking table, then swing around the room like Tarzan, reveling in the applause from the rest of the diners. I have no idea what Mrs lefty's problem is, but some of the church ladies said they'd pray for her.

I told Mrs lefty that this level of noise was unacceptable, unless there was a small nuclear event. When I pointed out that when we were kids, we were well-behaved, she said times have changed. This is true, but not screeching and disturbing the entire restaurant has never gone out of style.

Dear Abbie Ann:
We need help (desperately). Whenever we go out, there are children screaming and many restaurants don't have screaming children-free seating. What is the polite thing to do in this circumstance?
Puzzled in Pittsburgh.

Dear Putzled:
From the list of things you tried, I would highly recommend avoiding the ones involving hoses, bananas, body parts that aren't typically exposed, and service elephants with pet anvils.  Instead, I would have the waitress use hoses, bananas, body parts that aren't typically exposed, and service elephants with pet anvils. One must always do the right thing in the right way.

No, it's barely even weird.
I think we should all have a Live Funeral.
A funeral is held for you, but you're there to watch it. You hear what people really think of you. I think we'd be pleasantly surprised.

Nobody was surprised to find me missing at important family gatherings. They all say, "That lefty - he's his own man."  That's some of what I think I'll hear at my live funeral. I want everyone to tell their best lefty story - the funniest thing they saw me do or the most awkward thing they saw me do. My funeral will have people rolling in the aisles.

Speaking of saying nice things, my old boss accepted a job in another state and we held a going away party for him. My responsibility was always a roast of whoever was leaving. He came up to me later and said it was the most uncomfortable few minutes of his life. I had done my job.

So I'm Just Sitting There, Braiding my Nose Hair....

Pity me
I'm getting Windows 10 forced on me at work. I tried begging, whining, doctors notes, and faking death, but I can't get out of it. Before it arrives, I figured I'd need to know how it works (if it works). The best way is to download a VM (virtual machine), so I can run it in VirtualBox, where it won't interfere with my system. You can do this too - it's free and runs on all OSes.

I got ahead of myself, though. As soon as my system found out I was downloading Win 10, it started groaning. Then my stomach started groaning. When I went to ms.com, my browser refused to go. The cherry on top was when the (6g) download stopped for no particular reason. Yeah, this is Windows.

While we're on my favorite software company, Outlook 365 just told me I have Analytics! I'd rather have no lytics, thank you.  This little piece of.... software... notes what you do and recommends things. What kind of black arts are they forcing on us now?  If you are unfortunate enough to be subjected to this too, go to 'manage addons' and unselect it. People seriously want to know why I don't love Microsoft.

Hey Joe...
Every now and then, you hear some lyrics that apply, to you or others.

TOMORROW  - Joe Walsh

Tomorrow
Makin a list of things to do
And when I wake up
Gonna cross off a few

There must be millions of reasons
Try and explain but you're never through
When they give you 24 hours
Only so much a man can do

Tomorrow
Made up my mind
Gonna get busy
Come from behind

Today
I'm staying right where I am
Break a few rules
Make a few plans

There's thousands of things
Keep you from doing what you wanna do
And if it isn't this then it's that
Back where it's at and you're never through

There must be millions of reasons
Thousands of things, just to name a few
I'm gonna spend the rest of today
Making a list of things to do
But I'll do em all tomorrow
